Elements In Design

When it comes to interior design and home décor, it is often difficult to know where to start. How do I create a cohesive design that easily and naturally flows from one room to the next? It turns out the answer may be all around you – everywhere.

water, trees, sky, and fire

Water, Earth, Air and Fire

The four natural elements have been inspiring design since their inception by Aristotle and the Ancient Greeks (and who are we to argue with them?). Keep reading to learn about the properties of each element, and how you can use them to create balance and harmony in your home through inspired design.

Water

Water is a cleansing element. It is always changing, constantly moving. You can’t step in the same river twice, the ocean’s tides constantly rise and fall, and no raindrop ever comes from the same cloud twice.

Use fountains to create stunning displays of moving water indoors or out. Turn rain into beautiful art with a rain chain. Symbolize the way water

Earth

Ground your space with earthen inspiration. Fill the room with raw, natural wood, metal and stone to create a calming connection to nature. Natural wood adds warmth and is completely unique, as no two trees are alike.

Build on this with plenty of greenery – real or faux. Plants create such wonderful natural decorations. They add texture, color and organic vibrance to any space which balances well with the softer, muted tones of earth.

Air

Air is space, light and motion. We obviously can’t see the wind, so use décor that can help capture the way it moves. Flags and outdoor curtains dance and sway in the wind while spinners turn gales into galleries of moving art.

Add beautiful sound to the breeze with chimes and bells. Using sheer curtains inside maintains privacy, but allows natural light to fill your home, giving it an open and airy feel.

Fire

Fire is energy, warmth, light, passion and joy. What inspires more passion and joy than great memories of good times with friends and family? Historically, fires have been centers for gathering. Harness the light and warmth in your hearth or fire pit to create extraordinary environments that draw people together. If real flames aren’t an option for you, then you can capture the radiance of fire with electric accent lighting and bright, warm colors.

Hearth is part of who we are, and we offer innovative, high-quality products designed to enhance your enjoyment of an open fire, indoors or out. We have incredible outdoor firepits, able to match any décor from simple, minimalistic, and rustic to modern, ornate and extravagant.
