Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge
Advocates For Virginia’s Outside Dogs
Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located in Charlottesville, VA with the mission to provide a better life for abused and neglected animals by advocating for humane legislation, promoting spaying and neutering, educating families and communities on animal welfare and finding loving families for abandoned and mistreated dogs.
In August 2022, the team at Plow & Hearth raised $3,122 to benefit Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge through an employee-driven overstock sale held at the company’s headquarters in Madison, VA.
“Over the summer we took in several dogs who needed a lot of medical care. This generous donation will help with the medical expenses we incur while getting our rescue dogs up to date on vetting and healthy enough for adoption!”

Madison Emergency Services Association Food Pantry
With our customers’ support, we donated $27,700 to MESA Food Pantry in January 2022.
For each can of select Virginia Peanuts sold October-December of 2021, we pledged to donate $1 with a goal of 19,000 cans…which we beat, once again, thanks to you! In addition, our peanut supplier, Virginia Diner, generously pledged and donated an additional $7,500.
MESA is mostly volunteer supported, and the staff work tirelessly to serve more than 6,300 individuals from 2,800 families per year helping with unexpected emergencies, food insecurity and basic necessities. Donations support the community in many ways, including:
- A fully stocked food pantry serving 400+ families a month
- Access to personal care products, diapers and cleaning products
- Monetary assistance with rent, utilities bills and medical/
- Clothing and domestic supplies; housing placement assistance
- Transportation assistance: gas money for work commute, automobile insurance
Every donation and dollar gift is stewarded to get the most “bang for the buck” because MESA exists only to serve Madison County residents’ most basic needs.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia in Madison
As part of our 2021 Gifts That Give Back Campaign, we pledged a $1 donation to BGC of Madison for each one of our loveable Animal Body Pillows sold October-December of 2021. Our donation goal was 10,000 dollars…and we did it, thanks to you!
This donation will help offset the Club’s full-day summer program expenses. The cost to serve one child for the entire summer is approx. $1,500, but with support the Club can maintain its low summer membership fees of only $100.
“Boys & Girls Club programs provide academic support and enrichment in STEM, the arts, and physical and social wellness support. More importantly, the Club is a safe and inclusive place where kids know they are valued and supported. Thanks to the kindness of our friends and neighbors at Plow & Hearth, we have made it possible for the Club to provide high-quality enrichment programs that are affordable and accessible to families.” – Sara Conklin, Director of Annual Giving

Shelter for Help in Emergency
A candle in the window is a beacon of hope and a universal symbol of shelter and welcome. With your support, we helped turn the sales of our customer-favorite Colonial Window Candles into a $20,000 donation to Shelter for Help in Emergency (SHE). Founded in 1979 in Charlottesville VA, SHE gives peace, hope and safety to those experiencing domestic violence. SHE offers support through a combination of residential, community-based and outreach services.
As part of our 2021 Gifts That Give Back Campaign, we pledged a $1 donation to SHE for each of our Window Candles you purchased October-December of 2021. Our goal was 12,000 candles…and we far exceeded that – THANKS TO YOU! This donation will help offset SHE’s operating budget, with an emphasis on their 24-Hour Crisis Hotline Service and Lethality Assessment Program
“At the heart of our service is the effort to empower those who seek help by comprehensively addressing the circumstances that create barriers to leaving an unsafe relationship. To do this we work with the whole person and take into consideration needs that encompass physical and emotional safety, financial stability, safe and affordable housing, social/emotional skills, and the lingering effects of trauma. The best thing we can do for someone is work with them starting from exactly where they are to build the skills and safety net they need to be their own best advocate and to know that they deserve safety, love, stability, and respect. When I am working in the community, I often have someone glowing, strong, and confident approach to tell me that she and her family used our services in the past and are in a much better place now. Being part of that kind of transformation is the reason we do this work.”
