Who Says Christmas Only Comes Once A Year?

Learn the story behind the Christmas-In-July phenomenon –
and 5 ways you can celebrate it too!

Christmas In July

Most attribute the first Christmas in July celebration to a summer camp in Brevard, NC in 1933. At Keystone Camp they celebrated on July 25 with a Christmas tree surrounded by white “cotton snow”, a gift exchange amongst campers and a visit from Santa.

A movie from the 1940s entitled Christmas in July furthered the concept. The film, written and directed by Academy Award winner Preston Sturge, tells a heartwarming story about a workplace practical joke gone awry as an office clerk, believing he has won a $25,000 prize, takes his girlfriend on an extravagant Christmas shopping spree…in July! Retailers jumped on the concept starting in the 1950’s with July sales and playful marketing initiatives.

Embrace The Fun

If celebrating Christmas in July seems like folly, consider there are some solid benefits to embracing the concept. Not only can you get some good deals during Christmas in July sales events, but it can take the mind off sweltering summer temperatures or help some cope with seasonal depression by creating feelings of peace, joy and love more common to Christmastime.

If you’re looking to test out the Christmas in July concept for yourself, here are 5 ways to get started:

1.
Entertainment

Snuggle up on the couch for a movie night with holiday movies, like White Christmas, Christmas Vacation or even the original Christmas in July. Read a wintery book like The Polar Express or The Call Of The Wild, they may even provide a much-needed cooling effect during warm weather. Or, do your cooling off outdoors with some “sledding” on a classic slip-and-slide!

2.
Cooking

Cook a traditional holiday meal with some summertime twists, like potato salad instead of mashed potatoes, fresh berries instead of cranberry relish, corn on the cob instead of stuffing or turkey cooked on the grill instead of in the oven. For extra fun add peppermint milkshakes or a snow-cone snowman in Christmas colors.

3.

Gift Giving

Have fun giving friends or loved ones a cool summertime gift, like pool float, sidewalk chalk, s’mores ingredients, a flip-flop wreath for their door, beach-print pillow or a fun and functional item for their summer backyard buddies like cottage birdhouse, flamingo birdbath or sunflower bird feeder.
