Nice Accent Piece
Comments about Product:
The vintage pitchfork is well made and is a very nice accent piece for a smaller garden. I tried it in a larger bed, and it kind of got lost. I put in a new corner bed that is smaller and it was perfect! I've had many comments on what a nice piece it is.

Adorable!
Comments about Product:
I couldn't believe the quality of this item--it's a real pitchfork and is heavy. It easily supports the weight of the flower pots and looks adorable in the garden.

Less than expected.
Comments about Product:
Products are sturdy, but not assembled as well as I expected from Plow & Hearth quality. Screws holding shovel handle are very short and do not fit tightly, thus handle wobbles. Brackets to hold puts are too close to handle, so the pots edges won't lie flat and sit crookedly.

Shovel was easy to assemble and I was pleasantly surprised on the quality and workmanship.

Nice product
Comments about Product:
Great looking and about as sturdy as I thought they would be. I have them semi sheltered from wind and they survived the last storm we had. Mine arrived with the top half loose and wobbling from the bottom half do to a stripped screw. I used another screw I had that was a little bigger. It held but due to the size it came through the other side. It was that or return it and they were already on back order.

Cute but ...

Very cute garden accent. Hard to find pots to fit.

Perfect accent in the right garden spot.
Comments about Product:
If these items are set up against a garden wall they will support the plants growing in the holders, especially if your garden is in a windy area. Otherwise the pitchfork and shovel could tip over. Also, the description says they hold up to a 6 inch pot but I found a pot with a diameter of slightly less than 5 inches works best. If you scan in on the closeup of these items and look at the pots they hold you will see the pots don't have a wide band around the top so be mindful of that. A wide band on the pots will be too close to the tool handles and sit tilted. I bought them for a protected area in my courtyard and love the look of the pair. They will work very well in the right area of a garden!

attractive and perfect size
Comments about Product:
Pots work perfectly with garden stakes. I would suggest drilling holes in the bottom so water can run out.

The Olla: A Brief History

Olla (Spanish, pronounced “oh-ya”) jars have been around since ancient times. Made of unglazed ceramic, ollas traditionally have short, narrow necks with wider bodies, and are made in a variety of shapes. They have been used for thousands of years for cooking, storage, and plant irrigation.

When used to irrigate plants, an olla is buried neck-deep in the ground near a plant’s roots, with the opening of the olla extended above the soil so that it can be filled with water periodically. The porous walls of the unglazed pottery allow the water to seep through gradually, constantly and consistently hydrating the plants without overwatering them – and without wasting precious water to evaporation or runoff.

The use of ollas for irrigation was introduced to the American Southwest by Spanish conquistadors during Colonial times, becoming very common among Native American tribes and Hispanic settlers. Though the technique gave way to more modern methods of irrigation some time ago, its superior efficiency, coupled with its simplicity, has caused it to make a comeback. Though the technique has changed little since its introduction, today’s ollas are usually capped off, making them even more water-efficient.

Perfect for home gardens, Ollas are a super-easy, eco-friendly, less time-consuming way to water annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables and plants of all kinds in dry, sandy soil, very hot or drought-prone areas, raised beds, and even pots, planters and hanging baskets. Fill the olla before you leave on a short vacation to enjoy worry-free watering – and a smaller water bill!

How it Works:

Water is pulled directly through the terra-cotta!
