Beautiful flowers!
Comments about Product:
Sent the flowers to my mother for Mother's Day. She was very pleased with the arrangement and the opportunity to plant them in her flower garden. Now she will have this year's Mother's Day flowers for years to come.

It's ok
Comments about Product:
I ordered three of these flower bulb gardens as a Christmas gift for my mother. They've been ok, and gave her some blooming flowers through the winter, but aren't anywhere near as pretty as the pictures in the catalog indicate. Just disappointed.

Always consistent
Comments about Product:
I have been sending these to my parents for years. They love watching the blooming process unfold and then the sight and smell of the flowers for a couple of weeks afterwards. The delivery never disappoints and they look forward to a month of watching the flowers bloom, just in time to receive the next one, more so in the bleak winter months. Great gift especially for older folks who do not want another "chotchke" to put on a shelf.

What a hassle!
Comments about Product:
We sent an amaryllis from Plow & Hearth to my mother in law for Christmas & she loved it, so sent this arrangement for Mother's Day. The first one was overgrown in the box on arrival; had grown up and then down the sides of the box. She called P & H and they said that they would send another fresh arrangement. It was twice as bad! This woman is in her late 80's; she didn't need the hassle! We gave up and got a refund and then I had to go shopping for another gift!

Bulb Bust
Comments about Product:
This product arrived in good shape. Great sad was the result. Four pink tulips budded but did not open. They soon wilted and nothing else bloomed. It was a gift, and I am so disappointed. Tossed in the trash WAY too soon!

Mother's Day Gift 2012 - Flop
Comments about Product:
I was disappointed in product. Only 2 bulbs bloomed so far, very small and leggy. Bulbs had shoots started, but most shoots looked damaged when moss removed, as if frozen after they'd come up. Order process was easy, and was thrilled at finding a bulb garden. Waiting to see how Plow & Hearth responds to feedback and photos. I hope to give them a 10 for service recovery. Will update if this review is updateable.

My mother loved this
Comments about Product:
I sent this to my mother for Mother's Day & she's still enjoying it. She couldn't believe the number & variety of blooms. She keeps her house hot (she's elderly), so she had to put it on the porch in order for the bulbs to get the cool nights they need to bloom. But when she did that, it all came to life very quickly.

The Olla: A Brief History

Olla (Spanish, pronounced “oh-ya”) jars have been around since ancient times. Made of unglazed ceramic, ollas traditionally have short, narrow necks with wider bodies, and are made in a variety of shapes. They have been used for thousands of years for cooking, storage, and plant irrigation.

When used to irrigate plants, an olla is buried neck-deep in the ground near a plant’s roots, with the opening of the olla extended above the soil so that it can be filled with water periodically. The porous walls of the unglazed pottery allow the water to seep through gradually, constantly and consistently hydrating the plants without overwatering them – and without wasting precious water to evaporation or runoff.

The use of ollas for irrigation was introduced to the American Southwest by Spanish conquistadors during Colonial times, becoming very common among Native American tribes and Hispanic settlers. Though the technique gave way to more modern methods of irrigation some time ago, its superior efficiency, coupled with its simplicity, has caused it to make a comeback. Though the technique has changed little since its introduction, today’s ollas are usually capped off, making them even more water-efficient.

Perfect for home gardens, Ollas are a super-easy, eco-friendly, less time-consuming way to water annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables and plants of all kinds in dry, sandy soil, very hot or drought-prone areas, raised beds, and even pots, planters and hanging baskets. Fill the olla before you leave on a short vacation to enjoy worry-free watering – and a smaller water bill!

How it Works:

Water is pulled directly through the terra-cotta!
