I have the three different sizes in front of our main entrance to the house. I planted them with flowers and ivy dangling on 3 sides. They are gorgeous. THe copper color reflects the copper highlights on the stone siding of our house. Can't say much for the self watering as it's been raining a lot since i started using them. It's true that with the largest planter the water trough is the same distance from the ground as in the smallest, so it's not as effective. They look beautiful though, and I have gotten many compliments.

Contrary to the majority of reviews, I think these planters are awesome. I purchased all 3 for my front porch steps. The 3 together make quite the statement! However, there is no self-watering concept as advertised. The 2nd season, we drilled holes in the bottom sides to release the standing water. This made a significant difference. I did have to fill each planter to the top with soil which makes 2 of the 3 planters horribly difficult to move from step to step.

First I put a piece of tubing in to make it self watering. I don't understand how it is "self watering" as sold. Then I planted a 3 year old Hydrangea that looked very much like the one in the pictures. Within 2 weeks the hydrangea has nearly drowned from too much water. I will be putting a smaller pot inside and planting annuals...not what I wanted. Any success stories would be appreciated.

The planter is too tall to make use of the self watering feature. I fit my own pot inside instead of filling the planter with dirt. I like the look and could find nothing else that compares.

Bought this for my front door (two). Was excited about the shape, height, and color. However, the self-watering aspect is a bit confusing. The resivour should be much closer. There were no instructions on how to add plants or the best way to get the benfits of the self-watering. I guess it would be me:(. I'm concerned about stagnent water in the bottom. Any suggestions from PH would be helpful for all of your reviewers.

                      Best Uses

As stated above, well made, heavy duty, strong BUT not self watering as advertised. There is a partition but it is too far away from actual plant to be effective. Also no way of adding additional water without removing entire plant & dirt. Had to design my own water adding system, (purchased tubing from home center).

Don't understand reason for black rubber plug on underside of planter.

I will use them BUT not happy with mis-representation of product. Not typical of Plow & Hearth products I have purchased in the past.

                        • Planter

I purchased two large planters (27 1/2 inches tall) and will use them as planters.
The color is accurate to catalog picture. The planter walls are 1/2 inch solid; sturdy, heavy and stable even without soil added.
I am disappointed that there is not a true self-watering system. The false bottom is 21 inches from the top to far for the roots to reach for effective watering. There is also no way to get water into the bottom without just adding water from the top - no separate tubing. I expected a way to water from the bottom with a tubing from top or access to the bottom.
