The deep-bed construction of our Self-Feeding Fireplace Grates keeps the logs in where they belong, so they won't roll forward. The self-feeding design keeps the wood and hot coals together, so your fire burns more efficiently with less smoke and radiates more heat into the room.
Deep-bed construction keeps logs from rolling out. Holes allow for proper ventilation of fire while keeping coals hotter, longer. Heavy-duty, solid cast iron that will not warp or burn out.

Comments about Product: Although it seemed it would be difficult to ship, the grate required a few simple screws to assemble. The logs are kept high off the ashes so everything burns great. It is hard to find a nice large grate for the old fashioned fireplaces but this looks and functions perfectly.
Comments about Product: We inherited this grate from my sister after they converted there fire place to gas. It is the best grate that we have ever had! Due to its design the logs do not roll and it burns a beautiful slow fire.
Comments about Product: great product

Best fireplace grate ever!
Comments about Product: The grate's construction was exceptional. I didn't have any problem with assembly. I have already used the grate for several fires and can tell a difference in the burning of my wood. Everything stayed in the grate rather than falling underneath. Was a lot easier to start my wood fire than previously. Stands a little taller which allows for better air circulation underneath the wood. Bought one for my son as well. Hope he likes it as much as I have! Definitely will be the last grate I will have to purchase.
Great concept but not for me
Comments about Product: Thought this would make our fireplace burning more efficient. It does keep, the embers all, together and it does burn more efficiently, but we found that the fire didn't burn as hot. We have a blower on our fireplace and we weren't getting the same amount of heat as our old grate. Aesthetically speaking we missed seeing the hot embers under the grate. Also,we felt that it reminded us of a hibachi. It seems to work well for most people, here, but we went back to our old grate and are much happier.
Does what it says
Comments about Product: Easy to assemble. Holds the coals under the wood. Angle adjustable.

Comments about Product: My previous hearth was unstable and rocked back and forth. This one is extremely stable and adjustable for uneven bottoms. It is simple to put together and my fire has lasted so much longer I can't believe it could improve the burning so well. I'm annoyed I didn't get it last year!

This Is A Winner
Comments about Product: This worked so well, and I gave it a full season of serious wood burning, I bought another for the other fireplace. No warping, easy to clean, very efficient burning and GREAT air flow design for total wood burn

A must for your next fire!
Comments about Product: Ok, corney but true - this grate is great! Starts and keeps the fire going with minimal effort. Logs do not roll so we have a safer fire to enjoy.
Comments about Product: love this grate. We have a rather small fireplace but it still fits well.
Very pleased with it!!
Comments about Product: Excellent size for a dual fireplace.
FAST delivery. Would have given the highest rating but it was difficult to assemble.

Absolutely a great purchase
Comments about Product: Sent review last Nov.2012 - impressed with the stability of the product-tighten bolts/nuts first of fire season - planning on buying another for my large fireplace - The embers staying in the cradle give a hotter fire, burns all the wood and keeps log/wood controllable - you will not be disappointed with this purchase

Very good product
Comments about Product: We bought this grate to replace ours because the logs kept rolling out of the grate and there was virtually nothing holding the coals. This grate is great! Our fire needs very little tending and stays hot much, much longer than it did before. Our only complaint is that it is taller than it needs to be, so it seems more of the heat goes up the chimney. It could be an inch or two shorter and it would still work just fine.

Comments about Product: This grate is worth the money. It is well made and heavy weight. In comes in three pieces but goes together easy and has never come apart. It is easy to get the fire started as it stands up higher letting more air underneath. The logs don't roll away. Both my husband and I love the grate and believe it may be the last one we need to purchase for a long time. It does not lose its shape. It also helps build a better fire , hotter, and yes prettier fire because the way the logs stay closer together. I love this grate.
Comments about Product: Have had this grate about three weeks now. Usually have fires on weekends and some evenings. Works as advertised. Wood stays to the center, coals stay in grate instead of floor of fire place. Very sturdy. Efficent.
Great Grate !!
Comments about Product: After years of buying grate after grate as they continually burned out I chose to spend a bit more and try this one. Used it all winter with a fire just about every night from mid October to mid April...grate shows no sign of burning out or wearing down. Deserves more than 5 stars!

A love/hate relationship with this grate
Comments about Product: I am an experienced fire-builder, with about 20 years of practice, since fire is the main source of heat in our house. We had burned through a couple of flat steel grates, so I was researching online and found this cast iron grate. So far I have used it for several months.
The grate is very sturdy and shows no signs of wear so far. It was very easy to put together - I assembled it so that it was rotated as far forward as it would go (higher in the front than in the back). This helps keep the fire at the back of our fireplace, so that (hopefully) the smoke does not come out into the room. However, we still do have episodes where smoke pours into the room when we are trying to arrange/rearrange the logs. The main reason this grate frustrates me is that it is difficult to get the logs to stay where you want them to because of the curved design. The logs roll into each other and smother the fire. The curve is supposed to make the grate "self-feeding", but this is not the case in my experience, and we still have to poke the fire as much or more than we did with our previous grate. I like that the ash slowly sifts through the holes in the grate to the fireplace floor; however, it is difficult to clean out the ash beacause our fire shovel is a little too wide to fit through the legs of the grate, and the grate is so heavy it is not practical to move it every time we want to shovel out ash. I can't tell if this grate really "radiates" heat forward, but I would say that it burns a slightly cooler fire because of the fact that it is raised.
I am glad that this grate has been great for so many people; however, it has definitely been a challenge for us, which could be because of our fireplace design or the fact that we burn larger, home-cut and split wood, not small, uniformly shaped purchased logs.
This sturdy grate would have been worth the price if we had loved it, but frankly I wish I wouldn't have spent the money on it.
Comments about Product: Sturdy grate could hold large peices of wood. However just broke in half last night...did not even make it through one season. Disappointed for the price.
Best grate I ever bought
Comments about Product: Does a great job in keeping coals hot so you don't have to keep getting up to add wood to fire...holds more wood also.
Nice hot fire

Best Fire Place Grate I've ever Had!
Comments about Product: I usually burn through a grate every season. This one is the best. Noticed a little heat loss to the room due to how high it sits in the fireplace. I just pulled it forward a little and that corrected the heat loss. Buy it, you won't regret it!
A great grate
Comments about Product: I love a warm fire and this grate helps to keep the coals in place to maintain the heat. Its design projects the warmth into the room. Its metal is thick and heavy. I don't think we will burn through the metal anytime soon.

You won't be disappointed=great concept
Comments about Product: I normally started a fire by putting fire supply under the grate, with the limited holes in the grate takes longer and must be started in the cradle. BUT you will not be disappointed. The retention of embers in the cradle gives a more controllable fire with less wood that is burned completely.

Comments about Product: I live in the Mtns of NC and use my fire place from mid Oct until late April. I have "BURNED" through two fire grates in the last three years. One that came with the fire place (lasted less than a year) and one made at the local machine shop, and is now warped and bent from the heat. Both used a lot of wood, and left a pile of chunky ash. The cradle of the new grate is perfict for keeping the wood and coals in place resulting in a cleaner and hotter burn with 1/2 the wood used by conventional grates. Grate was easy to assemblr and fit perfectly in my fire place 22 inches, as that is the size of logs that I burn I only wish that I had this when we built our house. Will let you know how well it holds up at the end of the season.
Grate was a disapointment
Comments about Product: Delivered quickly, but well below the quality I expected. You have a first-class catalog with third-class products
The last fire grate ever?
Comments about Product: Judging from the sturdiness of this grate i will not have to replace it for a long, long time unlike others I have to replace every 2 years. I have wood this time that burns very hot and it's holding up just fine. If the legs were one inch shorter (have a small fireplace) it would be perfect
Comments about Product: Safely rolls the logs down to the center as others burn to ash.
Best grate for a regular fireplace
Comments about Product: I use the flatwood to start my fire and it couldn't be easier. My fires take less tending and stay burning, once lit, so long as I keep adding logs.
You have to be smart about starting and maintaining your fire. I had a very short learning curve on efficient fire starting. Now I can easily light a long lasting fire to enjoy all evening.
By Fireplace Fanatic
Comments about Product: This product is very heavy duty. Expect it to last a long time. Only difficulty was they didn't leave enough space around the nuts to fit a socket onto so assembly is a little bit of a challenge but not impossible. We bought the large one and it's a perfect fit on our fireplace.

The best grate for the money!!!
Comments about Product: I have had a few log grates but none that has measured up like this one. Absolutely money well spent. The self fed design allows coals to stay centered & continuous fire when logs are added. It is just hard to get balanced which I never could.

Great Grate - Wrong Fit
Comments about Product: The concept is great. We never had the chance to try it with a fire. Although the 3 sets of legs are designed to glide along the base of the grate for ease of adjustment and leveling, one of the end legs can only move a short distance while the middle and 2nd end leg have full range. This is a design issue where the shape of the casting actually blocks the movement.
Our "Fireplace Xtraordinair 44" has an elevated bar across the front and a small plate on the floor center-front which collides with the grate's middle leg. Had we been able to fully adjust the grate, we could have pivoted the grate and moved it into place. We had no choice but to return the grate.
Grate of Choice!
Comments about Product: After playing with a 3 bar rack for a VERY limited time (3 days), it was time to find a better solution. With this particular setup, I was constantly rearranging the wood to keep the fire going. Once the wood got hot and started shifting, its falls between the grates. Not signing up for this annoying program plus its messy!!!
The solution, the Saf-T Grate. It is self explanatory. The fire stays hot while the logs stay in place. Very little playing and poking. The fire burns cleaner leaving ONLY a fine ash as cleanup. The product makes complete sense. I wish to enjoy the fire NOT give myself another poject to constantly manage. Nice concept and design!!!

First place winner!!!!!
Comments about Product: I could go into great detail about this product but it would waste our time......dont shop any more, just buy this grate and you will never regret it..... IT IS THE BEST GRATE I HAVE EVER PURCHASED!!!!!! You will not be dissapointed I promise....I know I will never have another kind....may not ever ever need one anyway this one is so sturdy....love, love, love it!!!!!
Not so grate!
Comments about Product: I bought this grate to replace one that had burned out. It was the smaller size, and the vent holes were too small to keep the fire burning hot ... it was apparently not receiving enough oxygen to burn efficiently. After 2 fires I took it to the woodpile to hold down my tarp and put the old one back in the hearth. Even burned out, the old one worked better than the new one.
Keeps a fire going for hours
Comments about Product: We replaced our old wrought iron grate with this unit and the difference is night and day. Before, every time the fire burned down and shifted, the still-burning coals would drop below the grate, robbing the fire of the required heat to keep going.
It was a battle of wills - mine to keep a fire running and the grate's to kill it!
The design of this grate has a concave coal pit with much smaller holes, allowing only the ash and 'clinkers' to drop through, but keeping the crucial larger coals up top, where they belong. I can set up a fire and leave it unmanaged for hours knowing the physics of the design will optimize the use of the wood I place in it.
One more benefit is the cleanup afterwards, but preventing burnable materials from going out before they are exhausted, the ash I remove is a completely-burned, fine powder, making it much easier to remove the remains once the fire is just a memory.

By April Loves a Cozy Fire
Comments about Product: I wanted a fireplace grate that would keep my embers off the firebox floor while my fire is burning. The vented design keeps the majority of embers cradled in a nice hot pile allowing only ashes to collect on the fireplace floor. This keeps my fire hot and I don't have to poke at it nearly as often as I used to with our old standard fireplace grate that let everthing fall through.
Wow! Great Grate!
Comments about Product: I bought this after constantly burning out and thru a new chicken-wire type of iron grate every 2 years. I read the reviews and it seemed those who had purchased this were quite pleased, performance wise, with this grate, so…
I am not disappointed! I find the coals do shift down within the circle-shaped grate body and the ashes, when the fire is out, are so much finer and more thoroughly burned that clean-up is a snap.
Assembly was super easy, and not sure why another purchaser needed directions since, intuitively, the curve of the grate body fits into the curved leg supports…?
Because I also purchased the cast iron fireback at the same time, I did find I had to adjust the width of the grate support legs to accommodate the legs of the fireback, but other than that, easy-peasy.
The heavy weight of this grate also means when I do poke at my firedogs, the grate does not skid all over the place, and I do not have to drag it back into place, as I used to have to do with the chicken-wire style of grate.
Yes, it is more expensive than a chicken-wire grate, but one gets what one pays for, and I am very pleased I decided to pay for this curved fire-grate.
I would absolutely recommend this curved fire grate to anyone who would like fires to burn with less log fiddling and manipulation as well as less ash volume to clean up when laying their next log fire.
Best Grate EVER!
Comments about Product: We did a lot of research before selecting this grate. The opinions of other customers who purchased before us helped make our decision. We had burned through 2 grates in 5 years that were poorly made. We thought the grates would last. We were disappointed. THIS GRATE SURPASSED all of our expectations and provided a radiant FORWARD heat that came out into the room due to its wonderful design. The slow and efficient burning of the wood saves money. Once the fire is started, the hot coals remain with the wood keeping the fire hot. As the wood burns, the ash drops through the holes on the grate in a soft powdery ash that is much easier to clean up! We finished our season last year and had the entire fireplace cleaned up within minutes. I would highly recommend this product and in fact I am purchasing a second grate for our elderly parents this winter season. You will NOT be disappointed by yet another grate that burns through!
Just what I needed
Comments about Product: I warped and sagged the original iron grate that came with my 44" pass-thru fireplace in less than 2 seasons. This cast one sets higher for a much better burn and finer ash with less clunker coals left over so clean-up is easier also. My ash is cooler sooner so I can close the damper the next day instead of waiting 2 days. Assmebly was easy and the advice to tighten the bolts after it is in place was good to avoid wobble.
Comments about Product: This grate really keeps the embers burning so I can add logs and I don't have to keep restarting my fires. Before, the hot coals would fall through and be useless so the logs would keep going out. With just the first fire in my new grate, it is super hot and just kept burning! It is very sturdy too. I would definitely recommend this!

Worth every penny!
Comments about Product: This is by far the best grate ever! This is the third grate that we have purchased in 6 years. The other's the logs will fall out and fires were
mariginal at best. I read about this one and thought it was too good to be true. Decided to try it and we love it! We have had a beautiful fire everytime. Friends have even commented on how nice the fires are! I have recommended it to several friends and would recommend it to anyone.
Comments about Product: Delivered very fast. Assembles with two bolts. This grate is heavy duty. If you wait until it's in the fire place to finish tightening the bolts you can make sure it won't wobble. The coals stay in the grate mostly so you can keep a hot fire going easily. Just stir with a poker to get the ashes to fall through. This Grate also makes sure the fire is centered in your fireplace and not leaning on a wall. This is the best grate I've owned and my fires have never been easier to light and keep going.
Best Fireplace Grate
Comments about Product: I really like the self feeding aspect of this grate. You don't have to keep poking the logs. Just sit back and enjoy the fire.
Comments about Product: Did not live up to Plow and Hearth quality. One side of grate was rough with sharp edges. The nuts and bolts were rusty. The back measurement was incorrect (18" vs. 22"). This would be a problem for a smaller fireplace. The assembly instructions were not included (I had to phone).
I would buy this product again
Comments about Product: Works perfect and lets the fire burn slow and hot

The Olla: A Brief History
Olla (Spanish, pronounced “oh-ya”) jars have been around since ancient times. Made of unglazed ceramic, ollas traditionally have short, narrow necks with wider bodies, and are made in a variety of shapes. They have been used for thousands of years for cooking, storage, and plant irrigation.
When used to irrigate plants, an olla is buried neck-deep in the ground near a plant’s roots, with the opening of the olla extended above the soil so that it can be filled with water periodically. The porous walls of the unglazed pottery allow the water to seep through gradually, constantly and consistently hydrating the plants without overwatering them – and without wasting precious water to evaporation or runoff.
The use of ollas for irrigation was introduced to the American Southwest by Spanish conquistadors during Colonial times, becoming very common among Native American tribes and Hispanic settlers. Though the technique gave way to more modern methods of irrigation some time ago, its superior efficiency, coupled with its simplicity, has caused it to make a comeback. Though the technique has changed little since its introduction, today’s ollas are usually capped off, making them even more water-efficient.
Perfect for home gardens, Ollas are a super-easy, eco-friendly, less time-consuming way to water annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables and plants of all kinds in dry, sandy soil, very hot or drought-prone areas, raised beds, and even pots, planters and hanging baskets. Fill the olla before you leave on a short vacation to enjoy worry-free watering – and a smaller water bill!
