I purchased one of the self watering tomato planters after reading the reviews that others had posted. I saw that it was indeed well constructed and would be perfect for my needs, so I ordered a second one. I planted two different types of patio sized tomato plants, two in each planter and left them on my patio. Since I have a lot of trees, I was able to move these planters around to follow the sun as the summer progressed. They moved easily and did not roll once I had them in place. The tomatoes in these planters did so much better than the ones I had planted in large pots due to the self watering aspect. I loved this planter so much that I just ordered another one in preparation for next spring's planting (taking advantage of the free shipping offer!) and I will probably order one more as the season approaches.

You are left on your own to figure this thing out. Only cursory instructions for planter, none for the tower. Despite the wheels, I don't expect it to be easily moved over a deck. The only reason I have any idea what to do with the black fabric thing is from other reviewer's comments. I can't imagine needing it for weed control in a planter. Maybe it will help to conserve moisture. There are still spare parts for the tower that have no obvious function. Who knows? I may grow to like it.

Comments about Plowhearth Rolling Self-Watering Tomato Planter With Tower:

I bought these for my 80 y/o mother who wanted to plant tomato plants on their outdoor porch. The towers came rusted, no instructions where given and she has diffuclties rolling them around. We decided not to use the cages and stacked the plants instead.

I purchased 2 of these. They are wonderful to use in small areas such as a balcony or for parents who no longer can garden the way they at one time could. Also would be good for a person who does not want to fuss with a large garden--also good for peppers as well as herbs...
My parents are growing lovely veggies with in their planters and are rather happy with them.

Set up is easy. My tomato plants are in. I only put two in and one basal plant. The planter moves easily and is not too heavy as I had to bring it inside for a couple cold nights.

Comments about Plowhearth Rolling Self-Watering Tomato Planter With Tower:

I was going to buy regular planters to grow tomatoes in. But then I saw this one. It came with a cage which is perfect. The cage was easy to assemble and it just right into the tomato planter. I put about one and a half layer of egg rock on the bottom and then the soil. I now have beautiful tomatoes plants growing. I bought six different type and size tomato plants and they all fit in the planter. They all look great. I keep the drainage hole in the front so I can see if it has too much water. I love it!

I used 1 pot for 2 tomatoes plants and they have already doubled in size in a week! Used Miracle grow moisture control and they are doing great! The other pot I used for 1 tomato plant and herbs and that too is doing great! If they weren't so expensive, I would buy another for green beans! I think you could put 2-3 pole beans in 1 pot! Didn't use the black cloth or side bars....

I bought 3 planters for my work for our "Green Initiative". 2 have tomato plants and the third has jalapenos and cilantro. We are making a salsa garden. I planted yesterday. The wheels are very sturdy and easy to maneuver. The tomato cage is the trickiest part. You definitely need 2 people to put together but once in the ground it seemed very stable.

LOVE this planter! Used one to make a 'Pizza Garden' for my 3rd grader's class. I took the rectangle cage apart and made a square one using needlenose pliers. Then planted a tomato plant on one half and basil, oregano, & thyme on the other half. The kids decorated the planter and it looks great! For myself, I love being able to roll the planter around my patio. I like the shape and it seems deep enough. Only time will tell. I couldn't figure out what to do with the black cloth that's included. For the pizza garden, I put it at the bottom under the dirt and for my own tomato plant, I left it out completely. Maybe it's a weed barrier for the top?

Went from a house with a large yard & garden to an apartment with a small balcony. Planted yellow pear tomato, armenian cucumber, basil and parsley. It's been about a month and it's getting pretty crowded - will have to thin out the herbs. Would be nice if there was detailed instructions, helpful tips and planting suggestions. Like other reviews, I did not know what to do with the black fabric. I used it on top to prevent evaporation. Planter and wheels are sturdy - it moves well! The tomato cage is unstable due to the blocking material.

My only complaint is lack of instructions. Being a beginner, I don't know a lot about planting tomato's. I have no idea what the black mat is for. My husband thinks it should be put in the bottom so dirt doestn't fall into the water well. I think it is a weed protector.

This is an amazing product that is so easy to use and looks amazing on your own porch(or at least it does mine). What I loved about this was not only the quality of construction, but also the ease in which the product went together and how well the tomato plants are working with the cages. I have tried to grow tomatoes in pots before and it has not been very successful, but with this, at least so far, things are working quite well and the tomatoes seem to like their new home (though it is pretty early to tell what type of crop I will have). The wheels on this make the planter easy to move and even when you have dirt in the planter, it moves well on a smooth service or even on a deck. As you can tell I am quite impressed with this and I have already recommended this to other gardeners that I know as it provides you with both a great planter that is very aesthetically pleasing, but also provides a great home for the tomatoes you want to grow when you don't have room to grown them in your yard.

Comments about Plowhearth Rolling Self-Watering Tomato Planter With Tower:

I have always wanted to grow my own tomatoes but the place where I would have to dig and maintain (weed & water) a garden for all day sun would be in an inconvenient place in the yard so I just never bothered. I was so happy when I came across this portable planter because it completely solved the inconvenience problem. There's a place on my deck right outside my sliding door where the sun hits all afternoon and all I have to do is slide open the door to water and eventually pluck a tomato fresh off the vine when I want one. Once the tomato plants have been established it even becomes self watering. The casters make this planter that much easier to use. It doesn't take up a lot of room in fact, it's the perfect size and it even looks nice. Since it's a planter and not the yard, no weeding is necessary...another convenience. For some strange reason it comes with a black weed cloth which I didn't bother using. It also comes with a few left over parts for the wire tower. My husband just hooked them across the top even though they're not shown on the picture shown on here. Another thing it comes with is a one of those upside down tomato planters that you hook on a stand. We assumed it was a free gift included with purchase. As others have mentioned it doesn't come with instructions or a diagram but it's easy enough to make work even if you end up with left over parts. LOL. Despite the lack of instruction I still give it a 5 star rating because I just love that I can now grow my own tomatoes so easily.

I just push it around my deck to get the full sun. Moves very effortlessly and smoothly, even across the wooden deck. Wish that I had bought sooner. Going to buy another for next year. Love it!!

Only holds two tomato plants. With the extreme heat in the south, we moved it to our covered patio and the tomato plants are thriving. Very easy to water. Be careful if your plants grow tall as it becomes top-heavy and will tip over in a strong wind.

This planter is ideal. Being self watering, it is important that there is good drainage in case of heavy rainfall. This is a great improvement over the older design.

We have grown alot of tomatoe plants before but never have we had as much success as we have had this year. Our plants are over 6 foot high and loaded with tomatoes. It was easy to assemble and we only put in 2 plants like suggested. It is so easy to water, with the spout on the outside. We are excited to see the tomatoes ripen.

The wheels allow movement around a patio to follow the sun.
The wire surrounding the plants is sturdy enough for support.
It is perfect for a senior citizen who can no longer bend to maintain a garden, but still desires to raise a few tomatoes.
