Comments about Product: Great fire starter. Probably only one stick to get a quick started fire. I like to use 3, it lights my moist and/or larger pieces of kindling every time. Good to know it has been harvested with minimal or no impact to our environment. Well deserves 5 STARS.
Comments about Product: This fatwood is truly remarkable! Such an easy and effective way to start a fire; this product is one of my favorites from Plow and Hearth. Takes the frustration out of building a fire. Packed sturdily, and fast shipping. I wouldn't want to face winter without my fatwood!
Comments about Product: I have bought this 35 pound box of fatwood twice. Having a woodstove that doesn't quite make it through the night, it is great to be able to start up a fire again in the cold morning with just one or two sticks of fatwood and some small logs. I throw a small bag of fatwood into my car to have on hand for camping and picnics as well.
Comments about Product: The resin leached out of these fire starters, covering the brick of my fireplace in a sappy, filthy mess, which given that it's resin, is nearly impossible to remove. Then my fire gave out in 7 minutes. Messy and useless? No thanks. When attempting to return the items, chat representative Jenny Shifflett was unable to assist and disconnected prior to resolving any of my concerns.
Comments about Product: We needed some of this to go with our new Grate Wall of Fire grate, which is more of a vertical design and needs small pieces of wood to get the fire started. This really gets the fire going! We use with a small DuraFlame fire starter block. Only disappointment was that it came in a cardboard box; we had a wooden crate, however, so we use that to stack it in.
Comments about Product: Since we found FatWood we use it to start our wood burning fireplaces. Since we heat with wood in the winter months its important that we get the fire started fast and without the worry of it not getting hot enough to make the wood catch.
Comments about Product: These are good fat sticks. I buy them from Plow & Hearth only because they are made in Georgia and I want to support American products. But Plow & Hearth never seems to have free shipping on this item, and shipping really jacks up the price. (However, at certain times of the year, at least they offer 20% off of this item.) By contracts, L.L. Bean always has free shipping, but its fat sticks come from Honduras. That's the only reason I don't buy from them.

Comments about Product: We heat our 200 year farm house exclusively with wood. I can only imagine that past residents used fatwood to start fires. This is one of the best deals I have ever found; I bought 3 x 35# boxes. When you use wood to heat, it is important to be able to get it going as fast as possible. P&H fatwood fills the bill. If you watch for sales and shipping deals, you can't beat it. I will continue to buy my fatwood from P&H.
Comments about Product: I love fatwood for starting fires - never need newspaper any more. I always split the pieces into 6-10 smaller pieces anyway, so the thickness doesn't matter to me. By splitting it, you get a hotter, bigger fire that gets the kindling burning in no time. And, as a bonus, it's even fun to do.
Comments about Product: I have bought this product for my husband for the last 3 years and for our X-Mas Grab bag for the last 2 & it is always the most fought over gift. My husband covets every piece and will only use 3 to make a fire (I use at least 5-7). It's always gone by the end of Feb. I get 10LB more. Best gift ever!
Comments about Product: Over the years I have ordered fatwood from Plow and Hearth but it has been awhile. When I ran out, I bought some locally. Wow, what a difference. The local took more sticks to light a fire and they appeared to be dried out. The pieces were extremely irregular sized and they were SO expensive for what I got. This time I placd an order for 35 pounds from Plow and Hearth as the value is incomparable with anyone else. (I know, I checked everywhere locally and online). It was shipped quickly and the much better quality.
Comments about Product: My nephew sent me this "fat-wood" 2 year ago for Christmas. I heat solely with a woodstove and oak. This makes laying and starting a new fire a snap---amazing stuff!!!! You can bet I won't be without it now when winters come on now. So grateful.
Comments about Product: I have used this fat wood for the last ten years. I would not go into winter without it!! I heat with just wood , so it is important that a fire starts the first time I build it!
Comments about Product: I've been purchasing this item for years - very happy with product, however extremely unhappy with customer service - I was told my 15% refund would be in a few days, it took them 3 weeks after many, many emails. not sure if I will buy from Plow & Hearth again. LL bean carries this also.
Comments about Product: We have purchased fatwood for several winters and have never been disappointed. You really can start a roaring fire with just 2 sticks. We will continue to buy it as long as it's available.
Comments about Product: I have been purchasing these for a number of years and have always been very happy with them... until the last batch. I had a terrible time getting the last batch to burn. (Ironically -- and frustratingly -- it was a larger order than my previously purchases.) Once I finally got a piece to light and STAY lit, it burned as well as always, but I would often have to burn through an entire long fireplace match for a single piece of fatwood (As someone else mentioned, the pieces are thicker than before, but I don't know whether that has anything to do with the flammability issue or not.)
Although I have always been happy with these before, and would previously have recommended it without hesitation, I am now somewhat reluctant to reorder. If I do, it will be a small order and I will send it back immediately if I encounter the same problem. Hopefully the last batch was just an anomaly.
Comments about Product: I have been using these for several years now and never have any trouble getting a fire going. Just put a few of these at the bottom of your pile, top with some kindling and your logs and watch it burn.
Comments about Product: I've ordered Fatwood for many years, and I'm very disappointed in the last batch. They are now cutting the pieces in much larger diameter, so that now I must buy twice as much. To start a fire, the diameter needs to only be about 3/8", but the pieces are now typically 3/4" and sometimes over 1", which is a waste and makes it too expensive. But I'm sure they sell more wood that way.
Comments about Product: I use fatwood to help start the fire in my wood burning stove. Usually it takes no more than a piece or two, combined with my kindling, to get the fire started quickly, and cleanly. A must have for long Winters like this one! I caught it on sale and got an excellent deal this time around. It also got to me in just a couple of days, just before the next cold snap came through!!!
Comments about Product: This is great stuff. No more splitting kindling. No more piling up several sticks of kindling over a bunch of crumpled up newspapers & hoping the fire takes off. Lights quickly & gets everything around it going much more quickly & efficiently than conventional methods.
Comments about Product: We purchase this product every fall for the winter season. It is such a wonderful product to have on hand as we love our fires in the winter. We never have to wonder about anything ordered from Plow and Hearth.
Comments about Product: Kindling runs low late in winter, and the fatwood is so easy to use.
Have some creosote build up on glass doors, not sure if fatwood contributes to it. My firewood is very well aged.
Comments about Product: Firestater sticks are an answer to starting a fire. Plow and Hearth had the best price for the 35 pound box, great shipping prices and prompt delivery. I would definitely order from them again.
Comments about Product: I love this product! It works every time. We use it in our fireplace, our wood stove and our campfires. And I do recommend it to my family and friends. I think it's a great product!
Comments about Product: This box of starter wood is great for just that…getting your fire started. It only takes 3 or 4 sticks and you will have a good fire, of course, that depends on if you know how to build a fire. I use them to get my fireplace fire started. They are an added assurance that I will have a good fire.
Comments about Product: We have a wood stove with two 45 degree angles, which means the flue has to be warmed in order to start a non-smoking fire. I use fire starter squares, fatwood and cedar to get the first load going. Some of our wood isn't the best and if it's a bit wet, the fire can smolder and go out. I add more fatwood when I see that happening, which keeps things going until I can achieve a good burn. We've had a lot of fires with the cold this year, and some fire building challenges. I highly recommend keeping a good supply of fatwood on hand for those trying times! It's awesome!
Comments about Product: No longer had a local source for Fat Wood, so had to go online looking for a source. First time shopping with you. Impressed by the speed of filling the order and delivery! The price was better than my local source had been too.
Comments about Product: We use to start fires in our woodstove and also to heat things up quickly when the wood hasn't been thoroughly cured or dried. A few of these and you have instant fire and heat!
Comments about Product: I have used this product for years. Plow and Hearth always has the best price and the
shipping and delivery is very prompt. The fire starter works great. We pretty much heat with wood and 2 sticks of this fatwood starts our fire every morning. Great product.
Comments about Product: I use this with both indoor and outdoor fireplaces and it works great every time. It lights easy and burns a long time. One or two pieces is all you need to start a fire. I highly recommend this product.
Comments about Product: I tried this in my wood stove and was not totally impressed. Instructions included in the carton on the best way to use this would be helpful. I tried it in my wood fireplace insert and had to reignite it. There was some ash in the bottom from a previous fire (cold) so perhaps it was a bit smothered. I will give it another try but more instruction would be good. I doubt whether 2 sticks would start a fire real well.
Comments about Product: This came today in boxes which were falling apart. Yes, UPS is partly to blame. But maybe you should consider backing 35 pounds of fat wood in a better, heavier box. Just a suggestion!
Comments about Product: This stuff works great. It gets the fire going quickly, and doesn't leave behind residue the has to be cleaned up later. The only thing bad was that the box they came in in was a bit weak and damaged pretty bad, it almost broke open as I tried to get it ion the house.
Comments about Product: My knee went out, and I had surgery. Though I live on a large wooded acreage with plenty of free kindling ("lighter pine"), I couldn't get to it and, worse, I didn't have my usual supply of seasoned wood. Wow. This fatwood gets even the not-quite-seasoned wood going in a jiffy. A single stick of it is all I need to get my woodstove going, so although I hate paying for something I usually get for free, this is an economical route. In fact, I'm a bit tired of cutting up lighter pine and may indulge in P&H's fatwood from now on.
Comments about Product: We use annually for the fireplace and we order 2 boxes per year. Ships quickly and sometimes you get free shipping. Shipping cost is reasonable if you don't have a coupon or they are not running a special. As a female I love the fatwood because it creates less dust when using verses rolled up news paper. I can easily start a fire with the fatwood with no issues. Great Product for our household.
Comments about Product: It is so much easier to start my stove with Fat Wood than with HUGE amounts of newspaper. I no longer need to bother with kindling since Plow Hearth's 35lb boxes of Fat Wood are at prices that are low enough to allow me to use as much Fat Wood as I need. What a pleasure
Comments about Product: We buy a 35# box every year for our winter fires in our fireplace. We NEVER have a problem getting the fires started when using this fat wood! It was easy to order and delivery was very prompt.
Comments about Product: We were excited to get this for my mother-in-law, and ordered on 12/16/13, and was supposed to arrive on 12/20, plenty of time for Chrismas Eve. It shipped on 12/17, and I received it on 12/26 about 8 pm. I had been calling and tracking for a week or so. I suppose UPS lost it, and since it was for a gift on 12/24 and didn't arrive in time we had to make excuses. Very dissapointing. Oh well, I guess it's a good product, just give yourself several weeks to ship. Do not go by the dates P & H promises. Order much earlier.
Comments about Product: I bought 20 pounds of fatwood from Plow and Hearth two years a go and it worked as advertised. I even used some of the same fatwood last year left over from the year before. The fatwood I bought this year is hard to light and will not stay lit. I read poor reviews on the fatwood before I bought it but couldn't believe it was that bad. I had to decide for myself. I am a believer now, I don't think I will buy fatwood from Plow and Hearth next year. Most things I buy from Plow and Hearth are ok but not their fatwood.
Comments about Product: I used the product for lighting my 1970's wood stove. I love the ease of this product at geting the fire going. Thank you Plow & Hearth you provide the products that make my life easier.
Comments about Product: I used this product for the first time tonight in a wood stove along with kindling. The kindling tends to burn quickly and sometimes doesn't really ignite the larger logs. This product stays lit for a long time so it works with the larger pieces of wood. I don't have to get up and move the wood around to get the logs to really catch fire!
Comments about Product: I buy a 10 lb box for everyone and give it to them at Thanksgiving - at the beginning of the colder months when I know the whole family will be having fires in their fireplace before during and after the holidays! GREAT for fireplaces, bonfires, etc. Love it, love it, love it.
Comments about Product: It has been a pleasure to use this product in our wood stove it doesn't seem to us that we will need to use newspaper to start our fires any more. Thanks for a great product. Hatted to downgrade the product just because of the packaging, the carton was coming apart. Other than that we would have given a 5 for the rating.
Comments about Product: We love using the fat wood in our fire pit in the summer & in our fireplace in the winter. Its easy to use & works great!! Last year we gave some to family as a gift for the holidays & they absolutely loved it as well.
Comments about Product: I am new to fatwood and was sceptical about it's effectiveness. Now I wish I'd tried it years ago - this stuff really works. When building my first fire with it I still didn't believe 2 sticks would work, so I used 4 with a lot of paper. Now I'm only using two with just a couple wads of newspaper to ignite it under my logs. I still shake my head when I watch how quickly and effectively it works. I'm a believer! The only drawback originally was that my dogs enjoyed the pleasant smell as much as I did and wanted to take them out of the box to chew, but now they seem to have lost interest.
Comments about Product: I tried this for the first time in 2011, my second winter in my new house. I live alone and am disabled, so I was hoping to make fire starting a little easier since my wood stove is my primary source of heat and New Hampshire winter mornings are COLD.
I like it very much. I wouldn't compare it with commerically-made firestarters that ignite instantly with a woosh, this is different. It takes several seconds to for it to catch on from the match (this varies piece to piece) but then it stays lit which gives the firewood time to catch without a ton of paper and sticks.
I am extremely stingy (aka poor!) so I only use one, maybe two per fire. Using it sparingly really makes it last a long time! I generally supplement with smaller wood, kindling or smaller sizes before adding large wood. I suppose you could skip kindling entirely, I just haven't tried it since fatwood and kindling combined makes the process even quicker. But I can say I use MUCH less kindling, only a few peices as opposed to a handful. I don't need a bunch of paper now either.
Being disabled with a muscular condition, I am not always able to bring in wood as needed and although I do my best to keep it covered, it inevitably gets a little damp from time to time after a fresh storm. The fact that these fatwood pieces stay lit for good amount of time helps even slightly damp pieces catch on without too much effort.
This is a product that I consider a bit of a luxury and I wait carefully for sales and promotions to order it, but it makes my life so much easier that I wouldn't want to be without it. And knowing it's sourced from naturally fallen trees and not a part of the lumber industry lets me use it without guilt.
Comments about Product: This fatwood is great, lights a quick blazing fire with our oak firewood. We use our large fireplace as the main source of heat, so we use it a lot, and this is by far the best way to start it. No piles of newspaper to store for fire starting, and minimal kindling is needed, so we have room for the multiple cords of wood we use. In the large fire place we use about 6 to 8 pieces in a cold fireplace, or just 1 or 2 if there are embers to start a fire with ease.
Comments about Product: It just takes 3 or 4 sticks to get the fireplace started and I have a great fire for the evening. Of course, you need to know how to build a fire. The fat wood is a great booster getting your fire started for the evening. One 35 lb box of fat wood should get you through the winter.
Comments about Product: We have been using fat wood for years, last a long time. Always ignights a fire even with damp wood. It doesn't take many pieces to start, and is clean burning. Has a strong pine scent which is actually a good smell. I would definately recommend this item to my friends and family.
Comments about Product: Once I discovered fatwood, I have come to rely on it for our winter fires! It's a natural source of fuel that is super reliable at that crucial stage of firelighting. Just when the tinder burns out, it keeps the flame strong until the kindling takes light. Then add the next size wood and you're good to go! Highly recommended!
Comments about Product: Master Fire Maker will be your new title when you use these! I've used them for years with complete success when we're camping outdoors or in one of our two fireplaces. Never get dizzy from blowing on a fire ever again.
And they make a great gift.
Here in the hot desert, we're ecstatic to have cold weather so we can use these starters for a quick fire. Never ever use the chemical-laden products to get your roaring fire started.
Comments about Product: My grandson loves to have a fire in our fireplace. This is by far the BEST wood to get things started (or keep things going)! We've had many happy moments, and anticipate many, many more! Thank you so much for this amazing product!
Comments about Product: I use the fatwood daily in the winter to keep my wood stove going and keep my propane furnace from coming on. I am a widow and it helps make winter and wood stove easy/simple to use. When I use my firepit I also use 1-2 sticks to help start. Always works.
Comments about Product: We live in a log house out in the country. Winters do get cold here. Our only heat is a wood stove. This "fatwood" makes starting a fire so easy and fast. I can't imagine doing without it again.
Comments about Product: This fatwood has made my life a lot easier when it comes to starting my woodstove. I unfortunately have to restart my woodstove alomost every morning because it has gone out, and 3 pieces of fatwood get a roaring fire in no time. I have tried to buy from competitors, but I feel like plow and hearth has the best because it consistently burns rather than some pieces burning better than others.
Comments about Product: This stuff really does work great! And you really don't need to use that many pieces. I like to buy the 35lb. box this way hopefully I wont have to buy another box all winter! :)
Comments about Product: Years ago I loved fatwood, 2 or 3 sticks and you had your fire blazing. this stuff today is nothing more than dried pine sticks. I'm so disappointed you cant even imagine. It takes 10 t0 12 pieces to do the job. Heck you are better off saving your money and cutting your own kindling. This stuff doesn't even haave pungent pine odor or sap wet feeling that fat wood use to have.
Comments about Product: We have ordered this product every year and have been completely satisfied with it's performance each time we use it. We even bring it camping to help get the campfire started and helps to get the charcoals started for the bbq. Plus there's no stinky smell of fuel.
Comments about Product: We use fatwood to light our Fire Pit. Does the job every time. I like to use my hunting knife to split it down even smaller. You don't need as big of pieces to get a fire going. A box lasts a long time.
Comments about Product: The fat wood is great, we cut it in half and then spilt those 2 or 3 times. Goes a long way.
The only down side, our box was not taped well and fat wood was coming out of the box, when we got it--we lost better then a pound.
Comments about Product: We bought these for the woodstove at our Vermont cabin. They made this cold winter much nicer! Anytime we needed to restart the fire, a couple of pieces of fatwood would get the job done quickly and efficiently. A 25-lb box lasted us all winter; I've ordered another box for next year already this spring.
Comments about Product: Lighting a fire in windy, damp weather is difficult, even in a good woodstove. Fatwood has helped me overcome the problem of poor draw when the chimney and firebox are cold, and the winter winds are at gale force. It is *always* windy in the winter where I live, and my primary source of heat is a wood-fueled furnace. Fatwood is the best tool I've found to get the fire going quickly, and it was a life saver when ice storms took out the power for two weeks. In addition to ensuring heat from the furnace, it was essential to maintaining an outdoor flame in the fire ring for melting ice for water and the sub-zero cookout.
Comments about Product: i have ordered your fatwood before, and my pleasure with the product is why i ordered again. however, your packaging needs revising. i lost about 2-3 #'s of the fatwood, falling out of the hand hole on the side of the box, before i recieved it. not pleased... last time i ordered the box was completely sealed, with no loss of product.
Comments about Product: These fatwood sticks are a great alternative to those packaged firestarters that are really chemical-soaked cakes of sawdust. I just ordered a 25 lb. box and it was not well sealed - only one strip of tape across the top and it was not stuck to one flap of the box. No way to know if any sticks fell out in transit. Shipping dept. needs to use more than one strip of tape on a 25 lb. box, and better tape at that!
Comments about Product: I use fatwood every morning to start a fire in our wood stove. It only takes two or three pieces combined with some kindling and smaller pieces of firewood to get a roaring fire in the stove. This beats everything else I have tried.
Comments about Product: No matter how old the wood stove is, like the old ones in the rental cabins, this Fat Wood will light the fire and your cabin will be comfy and cozy We have started cabin fires all season this year and I couldn't. be more pleased.
Once you light the fire, it STAYS lit.
I've used several types of fat wood, but, NOTHING comes close to this fat wood.
I now bring extra fat wood when we are outside to give other campers for their fires. The say "thank you, and later on after their usual starter material are not doing the "job," They come over and say, do you have any extra fat wood and where can I get some.
Thank you, Thank You, Thank You.
Comments about Product: Would give it more stars if possible. Just returned from a camping trip to the Canyonlands, Utah. 3 sticks, a little paper and a single match and I had a roaring fire in no time at all. This stuff is awesome!!
Comments about Product: We have used this product for the last 3 years. It lights fast and gets our fires started without having to use kindling. Just put in about 3 in between the logs and they get the wood burning evenly. We just ordered our second box of fat wood.
Comments about Product: In our 300 year old inn, the fireplaces are a big draw in Fall & Winter. For over 10 years we've enjoyed the reliable and efficient way we can start fires with your fatwood. Thank you.
Comments about Product: I bought these to use in my wood stove which I have to relight each day. I used to use approximately 10 sheets of news paper before I tried this product and now I just use about 4 sheets with just 3 or 4 sticks of fat wood. I could use no papers but I would need to use a lot more sticks to start a fire and I feel this works well for me with the combination of both. The fat wood works well.
Comments about Product: I always use on top of grate 10 sticks and place few small logs on top of the. Sticks in a criss cross fashion.
Put a rolled up , crunched up newspaper directly under the gra
Grate and pen flue.
Light up a hand rolled paper under flue to start the draft and them light part under the flue and watch the fire start
Comments about Product: These are fatter and burn longer than any I have found anywhere else. I can count on my fire starting easily and quickly when I use just 2 or 3. I also throw a couple on a struggling fire, and it gets it going again in no time.
Comments about Product: While I don't have a fireplace my sister & daughter do. They look forward to the holidays knowing that they will get fatwood from me. Actually their husbands do because they are the ones starting the fires! Not exactly a surprise but I know they are getting what they want. Fairly priced and consistent quality year after year makes this a great value with fast delivery an added bonus. If you do a lot of fires you will love this product!
Comments about Product: Love the fatwood, but I think not all of it is quite fresh, as it doesn't light quite as quickly as usual. The oils in some of what I had left from last winter had dried out and were difficult to ignite. Some of these in the new order react the same. But overall, I do love it.
Comments about Product: I have been using Fat Wood purchased from a Big Box home improvement store and the Plow and Hearth Fat Wood is superior. The Big Box home improvement fat wood is hard to light and have to use 3-4 pieces to get the fire going. With the Plow and Hearth fat wood I use one piece and get a quick and hot fire in a short period of time. I will also keep several pieces in my back pack for emergancy wilderness use.
Comments about Product: Even a novice can start a fire with fatwood. Before fatwood I had a hard time getting a fire started. I use no newspaper, just a few pieces of fatwood which delights both my husband and chimney cleaner. You will not be disappointed with this product. No mess, no hassle, and it makes a great gift.
Comments about Product: Use to get the fire cooking again in the woodstove in the morning on coals. Smells wonderful- piney smell. watch the splinters, though. Want to use too many at a time- takes only 2 or 3 to re-ignite.
Comments about Product: Use one Fatwood to ignite our wood burning stove. Each stick does a super job of getting a fire going. We received our original supply as a gift from a friend and we were very pleased. For that reason, we ordered our own when the gift batch ran out.
Comments about Product: clean easy way to quick start a fire. The 35# box of fatwood needs reinforcing on the sides. My box came with the sides busted open. Noone had to wonder what was inside for it was visible!!!
Comments about Product: This stuff is worth its weight in gold! No newspaper, no scrounging for twigs & sticks. Just a couple of pieces of fat wood and some small pieces of wood start a blazing warm fire in my wood stove. I will absolutely order more for next season.
Comments about Product: We use Fatwood at our hunting camp fireplace. It is perfect for starting fires quickly, no fumes. Should you be unfortunate and run out of Fatwood, that is when you realize how convenient and GREAT it is! Not to worry Plow and Hearth is fantastic on express orders! A great product, must have for starting fires quickly in fireplaces.
Comments about Product: My daughter gave us a box of Flatwood for Christmas three years ago. I had no idea that something like this even existed. I was getting towards the end, called my daughter to find out where she purchased it. The sales person I spoke to was very pleasant. I can't imagine starting the fire in my woodstoves without these little pieces of wood. It used to be a hassle getting the fire started. I am NOT compensated for this comment. I feel that the only way a company will know if their products work, is consumer feed back. If this flatwood was not doing a good job, I certainly would not use it again. You also would have received a Phone call three years ago. Thank you
Comments about Product: I struggled to start a fire in my fireplace with kindling, paper and pine cones - nothing worked as well as these. Once I found them I wouldn't be without them. I put down crumpled paper in the grate, then 3-4 of these, spread out, less would probably work almost as well, then put 2-3 logs on top. Light the paper and the fire will be established without any work on my part in about 5 minutes. If later I forget to add more wood and the fire goes out, I can stick one or two of these in the still hot coals and they'll rev up the fire again. No more leaning over the fire with bellows and poking it. Just make sure your fire is on a grid and there's air circulating; don't use too much paper; clean out the ashes every other day (P&H has great ash cans, too). These will even get wood burning that isn't so dry, too. I wish I had them when I used to grill in the summer - I bet they would start your charcoal nicely instead of lighter fluid. One more thing - I used about 35 - 50 lbs of these per year, and we have a fire every night from November to about March. Just to give an idea of how much you may need to order.
Comments about Product: FATWOOD is so much better then rolled up newspaper to get your fire started. I now recycle my newspapers, instead of burning them. 4 or 5 pieces of FATWOOD and I have a perfect fire every time.
We give our son FATWOOD every Christmas, and he loves it.
Comments about Product: I love Plow & Hearth Fatwood. We've used it for years to start everything from our chimeneas to wood stoves and outdoor firepits. They are so simple and lightweight to use. We are both disabled so this makes starting our chimeneas (my favorite) just that much faster and easier! Thank you Plow & Hearth!
Comments about Product: My mom swore by this product and now that I have my first woodstove, I ordered this right away. It is great to not have to collect newspaper all the time and it ignites so quickly.

warmest christmas gift
Comments about Product: I got this for a gift after one of my sisters from Pittsburgh Pa visited me over Thanksgiving. we had a fire quite a few times while she was here. Hard to believe that living in Florida that I enjoy an outside fire. But I do :).
Comments about Product: I have tried others for my Vermont Casting wood burning stove and these are the best. They are everything Plow & Hearth advertised! Bottom line, they are quick starting and easy to use. Highly recommend!
Comments about Product: This is the second time I have purchased Flatwood from Plow and Hearth. Our last box has lasted us for a couple of years now. We use it everytime we go camping, and when we are sitting outside by our Firepit. It starts fast and the fire is lit quickly.
Comments about Product: I got so many heartfelt thank you noted from folks whom I sent fatwood as Christmas gifts. It is a long lasting gift. Every time the receipt uses one,
I can imagine the smile on their face
Comments about Product: We use these fatwood sticks to start fires in our fireplace and in our fire pit outside. We usually buy a large quantity to last through the winter and this year we are giving some friends a bag of fatwood sticks for Christmas so they can experience and enjoy the ease of starting their fires using fatwood.
Comments about Product: I buy this as a gift for our visiting neighbor who doesn't always come to his cabin frequently. He immediately has to get the fire started to warm his cabin and the fat wood makes it easy and quick.
Comments about Product: 4 years ago we got our first fireplace and had trouble starting our fire and keeping it lit. I found fatwood online and now tell everyone about it! there are other products that we have tried in local stores and from our wood man, but this is the best and price is right! wonderful item!
Comments about Product: I love this stuff! We heat our home with a wood stove. We discovered fatwood several years ago and never went back to regular kindling - it's SOOOO much easier, and the big box usually lasts us through the whole season. Only takes a couple of sticks, lights quickly and gets the fire going every time! It's also lightweight to pack to beach fires. Thanks.
Comments about Product: I was disappointed in the packaging. In your catalog you show a nice box with Plow and Hearth on the side of the box so I am thinking I can just store my wood in this box. Wood comes plain box, pick up by handles to bring inside the handles rip. I just think it is very misleading. If it doesn't come packaged like that DON'T show it that way in your catalog.
Comments about Product: I might have not used it correctly. We used it outside in our firepit. Very humid here in costal texas but that was why I bought hit.
Like I said it burned pretty fast, which I wish it would burn a little longer & it burned darn well for being humid & smelled devine but it burned pretty fast. Still loved it.
Comments about Product: These are the perfect fire starters!! The fatwood helps gets the wood we load in the stove burning faster and hotter than any other product we have used. We love this fatwood so much that it has become a Christmas gift for our friends!!
Comments about Product: In get my fatwood every year at the begining of the heating season and if I was to get a box that was'nt up to par ,then plow and hearth have replaced it with no hassell at all. They will send llabels to send it back by UPS and I give them an A+ for their service and to their products..
Comments about Product: At first, I used too much but quickly figured out you only need 4 - 5 sticks to light 3 - 4 logs in the fireplace. It burns long and hot and get's the wood started easily with little fuss.
Comments about Product: Fat wood saves us from using paper which is messier.....this stuff sits on the hearth and is ready to go, we LOVE using the fatwood. Ordering more and will always keep some on hand. Great product.
Comments about Product: The fatwood is consistantly good. Fire is going in just a few minutes. Just received a new order. The shipping box was different from the last several. The new box is thinner and has larger handholds on each end. Anyone could reach in and remove the fatwood sticks or if the box is tipped, the wood will easily fall out. To ensure customers receive all that is ordered, the packaging needs to be reconsidered.
Comments about Product: great product for starting a fire, even if wood is a little wet.I use fat wood indoors in our insert and as charcoal starter for the Bbq.I haven't bought starter fluid ever since.Fatwood does give off a distinct odor and smoke that takes a little getting use too.I keep the insert door open a little bit to create a draft 'till the fire is going.Works every time
Comments about Product: This is the perfect kindling to start your fire. We use it both in a wood stove and fireplace and can always start our fires with this product. It has a nice cedar smell as well. A little goes a long way. We have bought several boxes over the past 2 years.
Comments about Product: We stack two to three fatwoods on top of a sheet or two of balled up newspaper. Then we place firewood on top, being sure to not smother the fire. This allows fire to start very quickly. Never have any trouble when doing it this way. I love a fire but used to hate getting it started and this has taken that problem away. I now can make a fire daily when the weather gets cold. We use it in the outside pit, wood stove and wood insert....it worked great in the fireplace when we had that too. Love this product!
Comments about Product: This is my second time to order fatwood. It's a great product. I use it to start fires quickly in our woodburning fireplaces. My daughter also uses it for starting campfires. Would recommend this to anyone.
Comments about Product: I start using Fatwood to start my wood stove fires in Sept. here in Northern Pa. They lite very easy and I have a fire in minutes. It's the only product I buy to start my fires now. Very pleased with product.
Comments about Product: This fatwood is the real deal. Got some other fatwood from a company by the same name and it was nothing but left over trimmings from the construction of mobile homes - it was even still covered in sawdust. Don't be fooled - get yours from Plow & Hearth. It works fantastically well. I'll now only get fatwood from Plow & Hearth.
Comments about Product: I purchased this based on the reviews. I usually purchase the wax and wood fire starters each year and thought I would give this a try. It works great and no smell! I only use two sticks and it gets the fire going every time.
Comments about Product: We heat our log home in Vermont with a small wood stove. Sometimes it can be difficult to find dry kindling to start a fire, but this product solves that problem nicely. Highly recommended!
Comments about Product: We used fatwood in our woodstove for the first time this year. It saved so much time and required much less energy to get the fire going. Plus we let so much less smoke into the house lighting the fire with fatwood. Very easy to use.
Comments about Product: I live in florida, so I haven't had to use this order yet this year,,,it's not cold enough..I have used it in the past and was very pleased with how well it got my fire started in the fireplace and the fire pit outside...
Comments about Product: We use fatwood for starting our fireplace fires. How great to not have to walk outside in wet, freezing weather to gather/chop kindling. A few pieces of fatwood starts a beautiful fire with our wood. We purchased one of your brass holders to keep enough in for several fires and that adds to our fireplace decor. This is our second year of using fatwood and we love it; we just purchased 35 pounds for this coming winter.
Comments about Product: We use this to start our fire place. I stack the fire place the night before and place about six pieces under the wood stack. I light it on my way though the living room and by the time I get my coffee the fire is going and ready to enjoy. We have been ordering the #35 box for years now. We order two boxes that last us the entire winter building a fire almost everyday.
Comments about Product: Fatwood is a great product. We have used it for years in our woodstove to get it started in the mornings. I always make sure we have a supply. I only gave it three stars because this shipment of 2-35 lb. boxes came opened. The shipping of the 35 lb. boxes leaves something to be desired. One flimsy strip of packing tape across the top. Our last order for last year's supply was the same. Opened and who knows how much fell out before UPS landed it on our doorstep. I suggest sticking with the smaller boxes, even if a little bit more expensive per pound. They have always come tightly sealed and in good shape.
Comments about Product: We use Fatwood for our stove insert that is installed in our fireplace. With 3 pieces of Fatwood & a good match it quickly starts without any sooty residue on hands or smoke pouring out into the house.
We find Fatwood so dependable that we almost panic when we get down to having 1/4 left in the box!
This is a good product--Plow & Hearth are prompt in shipping--so even if we procastinate we know we won't have to wait long for a delivery.
Comments about Product: Awesome product. I'll never use lighter fluid again. This product works well in either a chimney starter or just burying two sticks under the coals. No funny taste to your food either.
Comments about Product: I love Fat Wood. I now start fires in my wood stove with 2 pieces of Fat Wood, ONLY. I place two logs close together and place the Fat Wood in the crotch where the logs meet. After lighting, I place a log across the first two and close the door. The logs always start fast and need no further attention. I have always used a handheld propane torch which makes the lighting easy. If I was just using a match I probably would use a piece of newspaper to start the fire. I sometimes get a whiff of the Fat Wood burning, but not often and I am able to shut the door so much sooner than with conventional kindling and newspaper that the odor has never been an issue.
Comments about Product: I use these fatwood sticks when I am starting the fire. They can be used in place of kindling if you don't have any or they can be used under kindling. They smell very nice when you first start a fire. They burn for a while and light with a match. They most economical way to buy them is in the large box.
Comments about Product: We are so happy we tried you. Our other supplier was out, and what a difference in you fatwood. It is twice as thick, the chemical smell not there, and it burns twice as long as a starter that helps get it warmed up and set the secondary and primary wood on fire,
Don't buy anywhere else... you will never get the quality like this.
Comments about Product: I usually struggled with getting my fire started when I got home. Looking for kindling was always a problem but not with this flat wood. I use 3 or 4 pieces and a little paper and have a roaring fire within minutes. I can even put whole logs on top of it and they burn almost immediately. I will never use any other kindling ever again!

Comments about Product: This is the second year in a row I have purchased fat wood as a gift for my husband's sister and family. They say that it works very quickly and is easy for her to use (before she wouldn't light the wood stove if her husband wasn't home). They actually told us they hoped Santa had some fatwood for them for Christmas when we sat our gifts by the tree. Thanks Plow and Hearth!!
Comments about Product: This product is fabulous! It doesn't get any better. After years of trying to start a fire in my wood stove and using all types of fire starters, this one actually works. It is truly amazing. All I do is light the stick, and the fire starts! and keeps going!!!
Comments about Product: I love fatwood as it ignites quickly, but some times I have to use more than two sticks, but not more than four at a time. It really saves on kindling and creates a good fire. Try to buy this at [@]? It is more expensive for a small amount. I always buy the 35 lb box as it lasts thru the winter and they are long in the Northwest.
Comments about Product: I have some wood logs that are slow and hard to burn. These sticks keep the logs burning and produce near instant flame and heat. I buy the 25 and 35 pound boxes as I use this all the time.
Comments about Product: I use Fat wood for our fire outside. I had a hard starting and keeping a fire going in the past. Not anymore! I can make a fire all by myself, without help from my husband. I just LOVE it. I gave a little bundle to my parents for a gift. They love it to, and want more. I bought a big box so I can share. I like how it smells.. natural and outdoorsy
Comments about Product: The Fatwood came right away. I bought it to use outdoors for my chimenea. It works great and there are no chemical smells like I had experience with the gel paks. I shall order it again.
Comments about Product: We use fatwood to start fires in our fireplace insert and wood stove. A pot of fatwood sits by each and is used to start every fire. This is an excellent product, well priced and easy to use. Packaging is such that the box with the lid removed fits in our bin exactly.
Comments about Product: I use it mostly in the fireplace and outdoors, it reduces the need for a lot kindling and gets a nice fire going fast. It is a lot of work to make good kindling so this is a big help to me.
Comments about Product: We heat primarily with our wood stove and fireplace during the winter. We have used Plow and hearth Fatwood for years. It is always dependable, easy to use and quick to light. I can't imagine starting fires without it.
Comments about Product: Brilliant stuff. Lights quickly, burns long and hot. Three sticks lights a great fire, add more if you have no kindling. Because of high sap content, smokes quite a bit, so think twice before using in smokers / grills, or let it burn out completely before adding food.
Comments about Product: Plow & Hearth Customer Service is consistently excellent -- I enjoy shopping with this company for a variety of quality products! Their fatwood is superior to those sold by hardware stores.
Comments about Product: 2 sticks will light most any fire and Plow and Hearth has the best prices anywhere. One box will last a year or two. I shared mine with my son and he will never use anything else again.
Comments about Product: I rely on wood heat for the most part, and early work mornings I've got chores to do & don't want to spend time playing with fire. Fatwood means I light once and go on about my day. P & H's fatwood has so far always been the most consistent quality product, and I've tried most of the mailorder as well as local sources (which run out early).
Comments about Product: I love the fact that these fat sticks get the fire going almost immediately in our woodstove without the mess of newspapers hanging around as well as a lot of kindling mess.
Great products from Plow& Hearth!
Comments about Product: We have been using Fatwood for several years. My wifes sister introduced us to it with a gift for Christmas, and we have been resupplying since. As we have 3 wood burners here it is a boon to getting a fire started easily and quickly. Thanks for a great product.
Comments about Product: I don't have gas in my fireplace and have tried several fire starter products and this by far is the best product out there. The wood ignites quickly and last long enough to ignite the firewood. There are no chemical smells and no excessive popping from dry wood. This is now the only fire starter I use.
Comments about Product: ITS GREAT - I USE FOUR OR FIVE STICKS TO START THE FIRE IN MY INSURT AND NEVER HAVE HAD A PROBLEM. THIS IS THE FOURTH OR FIFTH BOX THAT I HAVE PRUCHASED IN THE LAST FOUR OR FIVE YEARS
Comments about Product: In the winter, we use our woodstove almost daily, and the fatwood gets the fire going every time. Fatwood is, by nature, smoky, so I don't consider it a CON. The choice is to use it and accept the smoke, or not use it. For us, we will definitely use it, and Plow and Hearth has a good price.
Comments about Product: I use Plow and Hearth Fatwood for all my wood fires in the house and the office. It lights up quickly and burns hot and even, starting my firewood even if it is a bit wet. I have tried other fatwood but find Plow and Hearth to be the most consistent in its makeup.
Comments about Product: These fat wood fire starters are absolutely wonderful for starting a fire in my wood stove. I use them daily in the winter, just two or three little sticks of fatwood and I have a warm fire going. I will continue to order them and use them every winter. A great product! Thanks.
Comments about Product: I don't know if I'd be quite as happy if I paid full price, but the end of season sale price will make me happy for 5 years while I use this box of lighters. After using them, I'm wondering why I waited so long to migrate from newspaper to something as easy as this!
Comments about Product: We have a fireplace insert in our living room and this is our main source of heat for those LONG, COLD Michigan winters. I usually buy 2-3 boxes of the large box of fatwood for the entire season. It is so easy and clean to use but they do have an odor to them. We use 2-3 sticks to get the fire started, when you open the fireplace doors to add wood you can smell the resins in the wood. But still, these are the BEST firestarters ever and you don't have to try and find kindling, they fit perfectly in the dancing bears fatwood holder on the fireplace hearth. Love them!!!
Comments about Product: don't use for cooking on grill taste like tarreally good hard to put out like a grease fire[...]I will for sure be using moreI thought it was great I will be buying for giftsnext year
Comments about Product: We use this product to make lighting our woodstove faster and easier. It is great, as you only need a few sticks each time you light the fire. We have also used the fatwood sticks outdoors to light some charcoal grills and campfires. We have given fatwood as gifts to friends and family who have fireplaces and woodstoves, and they love them too.
Comments about Product: We use it in our woodburning stove in Wyoming at 7500 feet up. Temps can get down to 20 below with a lot of wind and the snow is 4 ft. deep, so finding kindling is difficult when we run out. This is the perfect solution!
Comments about Product: I generally put in 3 pieces of the fatwood when I start a fire. This product is great, it takes the hassel out of lighting a fire. With a 35# box this is going to take me many years to burn through! I would recommend this to everyone!
Comments about Product: we have a relatively small fireplace insert (20" wide, 12" deep), and burn primarily lodgepole pine during winter. i usually have to split the fatwood into thinner pieces, which extends my supply by about double. the big boxes lasted just over 2 seasons, so now we're just ordering either the 10 or 12 pound product.
Comments about Product: My second box and not the last. Fatwood makes starting my woodstove and fireplace a joy. A 35lb box lasts a couple of long cold Fall & Winter seasons in Central NY state. So easy to use, no odd smells. A couple of sticks and your job is done. Sit back and enjoy your fires. We have even used it in our charcoal grill in the winter.
Comments about Product: This is at least my 3rd order. We use it in our fireplace in the winter, and in the out door fire ring in the summer. It really helps if it had been raining and we are wanting a fire outside and things are still damp.
Comments about Product: I heat my home primarily with wood. I have used this product for years..a few pieces are all it takes to get a fire going. This product has been consistent, easy to use, and economical...it really does go a long way.
Comments about Product: This is a great product at a great price. I use 2 sticks to start my fire. Its reliable and quick. Beats using paper or any other product to get a fire going. Would recommend to anyone. And its earth friendly.
Comments about Product: It had been years since we had a wood burning fireplace, but we built a cabin four years ago with one and thought we would try this product. All I can say is, I wish we'd had it 25-30 years ago as it would have saved me a lot of work cutting kindling (but back then it was fun, right).
Comments about Product: My parents look forward to this yearly Christmas gift! It is so easy to use, safer than newspaper or other "chemical-base" starters, and has that wonderful pine smell! I "gift" to myself at Christmas too! Very economical as it only takes one or two sticks to start a great fire. great for the charcoal BBQ as well!
Comments about Product: I order the large box of Fatwood every year. We use it for grills, fire pits and our fireplace. Really makes building a fire on a cold morning easy. We even keep extra sticks in a zip lock bag in our jeep in case we are in the forest and need to build a fire.
Comments about Product: We use fatwood to start the fires in our wood burning stove. It certainly makes it easier. I have also given it as gifts to several people to help start the fires in their fireplaces - they now order it themselves. And, last, we always take some with us camping to get the fire started quickly.
Comments about Product: easy to store, convenient and easy to use, just one match.. I don't ever see myself gathering kindling again since I started to use this flatwood..2 or 3 pieces usually does the job for me. I use a wood stove...I even got an extra box for next year using the sale price. Never been happier......!!!!
Comments about Product: I like that this is natural, and it does help light our fires, but most of the pieces seem too thick, and don't stay lit consistently. I use two for most fires, and often just one will stay lit (and does eventually ignite the fire). But we have to hold the lighter to it for much longer than usual, or re-light it. Thinner pieces would work better. It if weren't getting warmer, I would invest the time in splitting the pieces in half.
Comments about Product: We just purchased a cabin in the mountains and it has a woodstove. We have very little firestarting experience, so we bought the fatwood to help us do so succesfully. WOW! We can get a roaring fire going very easily using this fatwood and we would highly recommend it to others!
Comments about Product: This product was bought for my mother, who cannot light a fire to save her life! Easy to use, fast starting, and she doesn't have to use more than two sticks at the most. She's very happy, which makes ME happy!
Comments about Product: Fatwood MORE than pays for itself by starting a HOT fire right away, no more "smoldering" logs, waiting for the real show ! It makes a nice, real wood fire just about as fast and easy to start as a gas fire! It REALLY works ! Because the logs start to burn right away, I find that there is less smoke in the room as well. The fires smell great while they are burning, but I have found that there isn't that "lingering" smell in the room the next morning. It takes less than you would think to stoke up a good burn, so a box lasts through a lot of fires! Try it once, you will put it on your winter survival list !!!
Not only do I recommend it to friends, I have brought it as "host/hostess" gifts!
Comments about Product: My daughter is a Ranger Interpreter with the National Park Service. Currently living in the mountains of Kings Canyon NP, she regularly starts a fire on winter nights when returning to her park home. Fat Wood is always on her gift list, and I keep her stocked. Practical person that she is, I'd have to guess Fat Wood does its job pretty darned well.
Comments about Product: My grandkids have allergies. The dust and dirt brought in with the kindling was hard on the them. It was going to be the end of woodburning. Since I sent them the fatwood they can enjoy their cozy fires, and they all love not having a big mess in their new living room.
Comments about Product: My 92-year old mother lives in the Pacific Northwest and enjoys fires in her wood burning stove all winter, but starting the fires has become difficult for her. With the fatwood kindling, its a quicker, easier, and safer process. I buy it for her in the 35 lb. boxes and they keep her stocked for months,
Comments about Product: My whole family uses Fatwood it's made it so much easier to start a fire. It lights quick, there is no smell, a box last's a long time. I have no complaints regarding this product.
Thank you so much for making such a wonderful product. This has made our life much easier and warms the house faster.
Comments about Product: I've been hooked on fatwood for several years but couldn't get my husband to use it. He would always crumple up a bunch of newpapers and split kindling to get fires going...and we heat primarily with wood. This year the chimney sweep told him he shouldn't use a lot of newspapers to start a fire because the ash sticks to the chimney. So, my husband decided to try the fatwood and is hooked. The only problem I have with it is that it is frequently hard to light with just a match or lighter, so I wrap one or two sticks in 1 page of newspaper and put that at the bottom of the wood stack. Works like a charm and no excess newpaper.
Comments about Product: We heat our house with a Vermont Castings wood stove.. there are always a few embers left in the morning from our overnight fire. We have found that Fatwood will restart the fire easily and quickly. That's great to have on a cold Connecticut morning. Our delivery was prompt and the Plow and Hearth staff is always helpful.
Comments about Product: I have been using these for years, after being raved about by a friend. I wrap up a couple in a small bundle of paper then place it in the firplace, add logs and light the paper. MAGIC!
Comments about Product: Love the stuff. Use it to start my wood stove fires, as well as fire place, or fire pit. Just a few sticks under the wood, it lights right up! Not sure if you could use for BBQ, but LOVE it for the other applications. No more balled up newspaper! Smells like pine! Very economical, I order a large box, and it lasts most of the winter season. We typically have fires 4-5 times a week, would not go without it.
Comments about Product: I am on my 4th 35 lb. box. It works great. I Use a couple of sheets of newspaper underneath it to get a more even burn. I no longer need to use kindling. I have also purchase 2 boxes for my son, he likes it also,
Comments about Product: This was a gift for family that uses a wood stove to heat their house in Michigan. They make a huge difference in the ease of starting fires quickly with little effort on our part. Thank you for carrying them!
Comments about Product: THIS IS MY 3RD ORDER OVER THE YEARS, LOVE THE PRODUCT, IT'S THE BEST AND THE BEST PRICE, THE BOXES ARE NOT THAT STURDY FOR SHIPPING, ONE FELL APART AND STICKS WHERE COMING OUT OF THE BOTTOM!!!OTHER THAN THAT THEY ARE GREAT, CAN;T BE WITHOUT THEM!!!
Comments about Product: Tip for starting without using any paper: use a knife to shave up a few slivers of wood along the edges, leaving them attached to the main piece. These light quickly with a single match and no paper needed, then carry on to light the rest of the stick.
Comments about Product: We have a fireplace and old cookstove, so we make multiple fires daily. With fatwood, we don't have to use paper and find small starter wood. This product makes it quick and easy. Now we regularly give it as gifts to our friends.
Comments about Product: Continue to purchase every year. We have a log home and use our large central fireplace to help heat our home. We now frequently use fatwood to start our fires instead of 3 or 5 pound log starters. Also use to get a fire going in the morning when we have limited hot coals left. Fatwood almost always lights quickly. They burn long enough to get most logs lit and burning well.
Comments about Product: I have a flu that is very fussy, and I need to get the fire in my wood stove started quickly with plenty of heat, and without much smoke. The fatwood is excellent for that. It stays lit, produces good consistent flame, and lights everything around it, so it burns fairly hot. In my fireplace, if the fire goes out, it only takes one stick to get the fire started again with fresh wood. For both the wood stove and fireplace, I couldn't ask for anything more reliable.
Comments about Product: I always have difficulty finding this product locally and resort to Plow and Hearth. This is a great value for a really effective product - I use it all winter to start my woodstove. I especially like that it is clean to use.
Comments about Product: I light a fire almost every night with this product. Unfortunately, I have to use several, if not way too many, pieces to get a fire started. Often, I have to re-light. I've gone thru 3 boxes of fatwood this winter, so despite its shortcomings, I must like this product!
Comments about Product: Great product and great service, as usual! We've used our fireplace and free standing stoves more because the fires are so easy to start with the fatwood. Just a couple pieces does the trick.
Comments about Product: I've been starting fireplace and woodstove fires for the past thirty years and, without your fatwood sticks to give that initial boost to flames,we'd not be warm yet. We like the aroma of the pine, too.
Comments about Product: [...] was difficult to lift without some wood shmootz falling on the floor.I much preferred the order which was in individual gunny sacks inside the large box. That was very neat and did not lose any bits on the floor.
Comments about Product: Love this fatwood. Priced fairly, especially when it goes on sale late in the winter. Have ordered it for myself and as a gift for a brother-in-law who's Christmas wish list includes only fatwood.
Comments about Product: We use fatwood consistently to restart fires in our woodburning stove. Even if the fire has died down and the ashes are cooling, all we do stir the ashes a bit, add a couple pieces of fatwood, and poof - we have a fire again!
Comments about Product: We have used this product for several years now. It's nice to come home from work and know that a nice warm fire awaits us. Using this product we have no worries of a fire starting quickly.
Comments about Product: I also sent him some "Texas" fat-wood from our five acres and he said our free wood started his fires on his Christmas trip to Lake Tahoe (7 feet of snow)just as well as your costly brand. I will only buy it as a gift to HIM from this time forward.
Comments about Product: I have a gas log lighter and I never use it with the fatwood strips. They ignite quickly and always burn long enough to get the firewood started. If the fire burns down completely, I can reignite it with a couple of pieces of fatwood and some fresh firewood. You can't beat the price at Plow and Hearth either.
Comments about Product: I have bought these firestarters every year since 2002. They are very easy to use and I can get my woodstove going with 2 sticks just about every time. I keep the stove cleaned out and make sure my flue is warmed up before trying to start a fire. These do smoke a lot if the flue isn't warmed up.I make sure that my wood is seasoned and DRY. I have had trouble in the past using the firestarters and unseasoned wood as the firestarters alone wouldn't get unseasoned wood going. Also call in your order instead of online-sometimes they have these on sale & it isn't advertised ! Love this product & hope they never stop selling it.
Comments about Product: Fatwood is a really great fire starter, and we use it all the time. We heat with a wood-burning high-efficiency fireplace insert. Here in Colorado it goes from 20 below to 60 degrees in a matter of days. Fatwood is always reliable for warming us up quickly.
Comments about Product: Every year we buy the biggest box of fatwood Plow and Hearth sells. Last year, we ran out and my husband was besides himself. This year, the fatwood was purchased even before the cords of firewood. It is so easy to use, my six year old delights in helping light the fire by putting the sticks in the fireplace and helping Dad light them. This way he can proclaim that he made the fire!
Comments about Product: I love that this is a 100% natural product. We've ordered box after box of it as we've needed it and it's been consistently high quality. Burns long enough for even larger pieces of less dry wood to ignite. I compared the price of this product to many other sites online and found this one to be the least expensive.
Comments about Product: We've had a long, hard, cold winter and these fatwood sticks are disappearing quickly! So handy for getting a roaring fire going fast. We'll be back for more next year for sure.
Comments about Product: I GAVE THE FATWOOD AS A GIFT TO MY SISTER, SINCE SHE HAS A WOOD-BURNING FIREPLACE AT HER BEACH HOUSE. THEY NEEDED A WOOD SOURCE, SO WE'LL BE PURCHASING MORE, I'M SURE. THE FATWOOD MADE HER HUGE PLACE SMELL GREAT AND LOOKED NICE SITTING ON THE HEARTH, BEFORE USE. AS A GIFT, SINCE THE FATWOOD CAME WITH ATTRACTIVE PACKAGING, ALL I HAD TO DO WAS FILL IN THE CARD AND SLAP A BOW ON IT!
Comments about Product: Roughly half my household heating is with firewood--and I live in the coldest part of Utah. I've been using Fatwood for several years, and have never come across an alternative I even cared to try. I also have a mountain cabin with a fireplace and a wood stove, and Fatwood works well in the fireplace, too. Thanks for a dependable product.
Comments about Product: My husband likes to tell the old story about how the Ladies of the Evening called it "Trad'n Wood", when the Loggers came to town. The "Ladies" needed an easy way to start fires on the cold winter nights.
Comments about Product: Love this Fatwood. It smells nice and it makes starting a fire really easy. I ordered the large box and the 12 lb. bag. that I gave as a Christmas Gift. It will last you a long time as it only takes a few sticks to make a nice fire.
Comments about Product: Very easy to use. I'm not good at starting the fire in our wood stove, so my husband bought these for me. Well guess what???? I can now start the fire and have the house warm by the time he comes home from work!
Comments about Product: Why try to start a fire without " Fat Wood " ?
I have given this as part of a gift package twice before and all 3 times it was received with curiousity and later rave reviews.
Simple starter,,, why go anyother way. I am sure the the recipient will continue using this method for a long, long time.
Comments about Product: This was ordered as a gift - the only problem was that the recipient could not find the "to/from" gift card in the package (it may have been overlooked or lost by them) ... it was a good thing they suspected it might have been a gift from me. Otherwise, fully pleased with the order.
Comments about Product: I have been gifting this product along with the color cones refill for many yeaers. They are alway very well received. Everyone who receives these 2 products are thrilled and look forward to using them
Comments about Product: I used to crumple up paper and split my kindling very small. It would still take quite a while to get the fire going and I had to constantly be fussing with it. With fat wood I just put in 4 pieces. A fire will start fine with less but I like to get a fire blazing within about 10 minuites.I make a little square with 2 on the bottom and 2 crossing on top of them. I then pick out a thin piece, light it with a lighter, and use it to start the ends of the two top pieces.I then put my kindling that's about 2 to 3 inches square in a crossing pattern on top of the fat wood. It used to take me a half hour or more to go from build to a blazing fire now takes less than 10 minuites. I've been using fat wood from Plow and Hearth for more years than I can remember. I've searched the web for better deals and have not found one.
Comments about Product: This shipment of fatwood just doesn't burn well at all. It's hard to light and doesn't stay lit,I am hoping that after sitting threw the warmer weather next season it will work better.
Comments about Product: This is the best fatwood. I use it every morning to start a fire in my woodburning stove.I've used fatwood from other distributors, and their fatwood doesn't measure up. It is nice and dry and very pitchy and therefore ignites quickly. Don't know how I'd live without it!
Comments about Product: I bought some fatwood from the big box stores and consistently could not get the product to light up. Your fatwood lights quickly, starts my fire each and every time. You've got me hooked on your product.
Comments about Product: Have used this product for years - consistant quality. Has an odor to it, but it's NOT unpleasant - in fact (in my opinion) it's what a fireplace should smell like - sort of like a camp fire without all the smoke in your eyes.[...]
Comments about Product: This product is wonderful. We use it every time we start a fire in our fireplace while spending time in our Condo on the weekends...skiing. Makes a quick start to the fire at the end of a long day..[...]
Comments about Product: I've enjoyed lighting fires in my woodstove so much more this winter than other winters. Fatwood lights easily and keeps the fires going so that I've had to relight the fire less often this year. It does have a bit of a smell, however this dissapates quickly as the fire burns.
Comments about Product: Son who is a firepit enthusiast was very pleased with his gift of fire-starting Fatwood. He even uses just a few sticks by themselves for a short term fire rather than forego the enjoyment when there's not time to burn a whole log--he is amazed how long they burn.
Comments about Product: I was introduced to this product by a friend; they gave it to us as a gift, that was 3 years ago and I have been using it ever since! We use it in a wood stove which I use to heat our home and it makes for a quick fire and quick heat! It's the best!
Comments about Product: We just bought a house with a real fireplace. We were using paper, pine cones, kerosene, heck, anything we could get to try to light the fire until I found Fatwood. This made our winter SO MUCH BETTER. All it takes is a few pieces and you have a fire. They aren't messy, they light easy, they burn perfectly... we are DEFINITELY repeat business!
Comments about Product: These were great fat wood sticks. Worked just exactly as I wished. Use only 3 to start a wood stove with a little bit of newspaper every day...gets the whole shebang fired up in no time. And the sticks smell SO good!! Definitely worth the money!! And I will buy more next year!!
Comments about Product: We heat in the winter with a wood burning stove and we always use these. They get the fire started easily. We put a couple on top of some crumpled newspaper and it never fails to get the fire going.
Comments about Product: The fatwood is just the right size for it to ignite well inside the fireplace. We always order the big boxes of it because it is more for the money. Plow and Hearth gives excellent [...] service.
Comments about Product: I was amazed at how quickly the Fatwood started a roaring fire. I can now build a fire whenever I want one instead of waiting for former Boy Scout husband to get the wood burning for me. I plan to keep us stocked in Fatwood every winter, as there is nothing better than a fire that is easy to start, hot chocolate, and a good book.[...] I will also be giving bundles as gifts this holiday season.

How the wood works
Comments about Product: I use the fatwood to light my fires all the time they are so easy to use and I don't have to go and cut wood to start the fire and the 35lbs box is the only way to buy it. I highly recommend this product to everyone...
Comments about Product: I have used it for campfires, in a fireplace insert, fireplace, and a free-standing wood stove. It lights very easily and burns quite hot. It just has a smell I would not want on food items.
Comments about Product: We find the large box to be a good value, and have purchased it more than once. There are fumes, but they are slight. We are quite satisfied with the product and will likely continue to purchase it every winter.
Comments about Product: It consistantly functions as it should. fairly easy to light and burns well, easily spreading to properly seasoned firewood. As expected, it makes a bit of soot while burning so it needs to be kept under the exhaust path out of the fireplace or woodburning stove. There is some odor but it is typically not an issue if the burning wood is kept close to the chimney opening. Overall, this is the best fatwood I have found, having tried all our local sources. It makes starting the evening fires very easy.
Comments about Product: Have been using this product for years. It is the easiest way I have found to start the fire in my woodstove. It is also great for restarting if the fire starts to go out... throw in a couple pieces and you are back in business. Recommend Highly. [...]
Comments about Product: I use the Flatwood to light my fireplace and find it very helpful. This particular order seemed to have more pitch in it and works even better than previous orders. I recommend it to my friends and will be purchasing it again myself.
Comments about Product: I use this product to light the fire in my wood stove. It seems that after the box had been open for about 2 months the fatwood was harder to ignite. However, I will continue to purchase this product.
Comments about Product: I use in my fireplace: crumpled newspaper below and on top of my grate, then a handful of fatwood; I'm sure I could use less but I like a roaring fire. Then I lay out my logs on top of the fatwood. I light the newspaper and usually don't have to worry about the fire after that - except to keep adding logs. The only reason I use the newspaper is because it's easier to light when bending over the screen with a little match. If I forget to add a log and the fire dies down - one piece of fatwood gets it roaring again. Well worth the price! If I still went camping I would take some with me - one stick will start your campfire! I may try outdoor grilling again this summer - I gave up because charcoal is so hard to light - I think this will make it easy. I love cooking over a wood fire but never liked the lighter fluid. My elderly mother used to love this because she could start the fire in the fireplace herself with a lot less fuss. Great product!
Comments about Product: Just recieved my 35 Lb box of this product and immediatly wanted to try it..and "WOW" I started with 6 stix "could of used less" and now have a roaring fire..deffinetly gonna be a regular user of this excellant starter....best present I could of asked for...
Comments about Product: I've used Fatwood from Plow and Hearth for three years. I use it to start a large wood stove, a fire place and for camp fires. In all cases I crumple up old newspaper, place 3-7 pieces of fatwood on the paper, then place several large logs or split firewood directly on the fatwood and light the paper. It starts everytime with ease and no smell. It's perfect! No more kindling required!
Comments about Product: I read the reviews and was sceptical about using fatwood. After my first fire with them, I'm hooked. They are like magic. Two little pieces start a roaring fire without kindling. Good-bye newspaper and twigs.
Comments about Product: At first my husband didn't think we needed fatwood and wanted to continue using kindling. After trying it, he was enthusiastic above using it, as it lights quickly and starts the fire better. Like most wood, it will leave little pieces behind wherever it is placed; but, unlike other wood, there is no dirt left behind. If your fire gets low before you can add more wood, a stick of fatwood gets it roaring again very quickly. We stocked up on fatwood for the winter.
Comments about Product: We order our Fatwood early for our wood burner so we will be ready when cold weather arrives. Also, purchased extra for our granddaughter who has fireplace insert and shared with friends. I've never had a problem starting a fire as it's so quick and easy. Saves lots of time and energy.
Comments about Product: Excellent for starting up the barbecue grill; no smelly lighter fluid. One stick will generally do the job. Great for starting fires in any kind of indoor or outdoor event. Fast delivery and great price.
Comments about Product: I use Fatwood to start fires in my fireplace. I use 3 sticks in combination with a few sheets of rolled up newspaper to ignite the stacked logs - it works every time!! The Fatwood not only ignites quickly, but it also burns for a long time making it so easy to start a fire.
Comments about Product: Used primarily to start catalytic wood stove fires, and does so with consistently rapid results. Further, this is readily accomplished with a few pieces of the product. Finally, the price is quite reasonable making this a real value.
Comments about Product: Can't believe we're using our fireplace already here in Central Florida, but it has been COLD. The fat wood burns great, gets the logs burning quickly, and no smelly fumes. We liked the bag it came in, too.
Comments about Product: I made my first purchase of the 'fatwood' for my elderly parents to help them start fires in their wood-burning stove. The product works amazingly well and provided me the comfort of knowing that I was making things a bit easier for my folks.
I have continued to buy this product, now for my own use, to start fires in bothe wood-burning stoves and fireplaces. It ignites quickly, and helps start even larger pieces of seasoned oak, with ease.
I would recommend this product to anyone who enjoys a wood-burning fireplace or stove.
Comments about Product: Product is used to start daily fires in an airtight Buck Stove - Before Fatwood I spent lots of time splitting kindling and used many matches to start our daily fire in our log cabin home in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Comments about Product: We heat exclusively with wood and this is a lifesaver! I can light the stove in record time without having to split those big logs into kindling. We've even given boxes to family as gifts!
Comments about Product: We use this all the time in our fireplace. This is the first batch we've had, and we've been getting this for ~6 years now, that is inconsistent with lighting. Sometimes hard to get it to light and stay lit. Maybe some funky pieces in the box, but would recomment it to others...
Comments about Product: We have a fire going almost every day in the winter. We used to have to wait for my husband to build the fires. No more!
Since we discovered fatwood, either our teenaged boys or I can easily have a fire going and a pot of coffee to greet him when he gets home.
No more walking in the woods out back to gather kindling that is too wet, too dry...
It ignites easily, and burns long enough to get the wood going. Perfect.
Now, every winter begins with an order of fatwood.
Comments about Product: I can always count on this to get my fire going, or if it needs a boost. Works great, and I love the amount. Even if I do not go through it in the cold season, I have it for our outdoor fires later in the year. Good Stuff!
Comments about Product: I get these for a relative of mine who heats with a wood stove. Sometimes they're away from home for a big part of the day, and when they get home there are just a few coals left in the stove. Living in the Northeast, it's really helpful when you can get the fire going again quickly, and that's what these do.
Comments about Product: We like the fatwood product for lighting our fires in our woodstove. They are pretty consistent in doing the job. The tote came in the box and smells like the fatwood, which smells more like diesel than resin. Not enough of a smell that we can't keep some in our living room, but can't use the tote for anything other than fatwood or kindling.
Comments about Product: We use fatwood to rekindle a fire that has burned down to hot ashes and it works well for that. We've had difficulty with trying to start a fire from scrath using fatwood but it can be done if you use several (4 or 5) sticks. We use your cedar discs to start the fire and keep it going with fatwood if it burns down.
Comments about Product: We love this fatwood, this year I bought 3 boxes. We use it from November-March here in Michigan. We have a fireplace insert and our primary source of heat for the house is our woodburning fireplace. I just ordered the dancing bear bucket to keep the sticks in on the hearth, these are so handy and clean.
Comments about Product: We got a new wood stove, and the fatwood we got is the best easiest way to get the wood going after a day at work or overnight when there are only coals left... One or two pieces and the job is over!!!!!
Comments about Product: I usually can use 2 stick with firewood and get a quick start. If the wood is damp I migt use more. I have been using this product for several years. I usually order 10 lb-25 lbs. in September.
Comments about Product: This makes fire starting so easy and not messy at all. I heat only by a wood stove in Montana, so it is a constant thing to have a fire ready to go. If when I get up in the morning and the fire is almost out, then I just throw a couple of pieces of the fatwood in and then my wood. In just a few seconds I have a fire going again. LOVE IT! I buy a new box every year....
Comments about Product: I use this product to start my woodstove, it is the best that I have ever used, no odor, it lights quickly and it gets my woodstove going with little or no effort. I have ordered this product the past two years and I can see my self ordering many times in the future.
Comments about Product: I love fatwood - I decided to for-go a convenient easy gas fireplace because I love the smell of burning wood and crackling fires. But I admit its got its down sides. Fatwood's ease motivates my family (teenagers included) to light a fire every evening. [...]
Comments about Product: I use these every time I start a fire in my wood stove at home. I live in Vermont and use a wood stove to offset my heating costs in the Winter. Having this fatwood means I get a strong, hot, long-lasting fire every time and lets me move on to other things around the house.
Comments about Product: I wrap it in a piece of newspaper and the newspaper once ignited always has enough heat to ignite the Fatwood. It saves holding a lighter until the Fatwood catches fire. The Fatwood burns long enough to ignite the other wood around it. Great product, great value!
Comments about Product: I have used these fatsticks for both of my wood burning stoves, camping, and my outside fire place. This product has saved me a lot of time and frustration. I also require far less kindling now. Sometimes the fatsticks need to be relit but it beats having to use paper.

WE BUY A LARGE BOX EVERY YEAR
Comments about Product: WE LIVE IN THE SIERRAS AND THE ONLY DOWNSIDE TO PURCHASING THE FATWOOD IS TO REMEMBER TO ORDER IT EARLY ENOUGH IN THE SEASON. SOMETIMES THE SNOW HAS A WAY OF SNEAKING UP ON US. I DON'T LIKE TO SIT IN FRONT OF THE FIRE FOR 30 MINUTES TRYING TO GET IT STARTED.I SLIP A FEW OF THESE INTO THE WOODSTOVE, PILE ON A COUPLE OF SMALLER LOGS, LIGHT IT AND LEAVE. PRESTO, WE HAVE FIRE. LOVE THESE. WE BUY A BOX OF FATWOOD EVERY YEAR.
Comments about Product: This is the fifth year that we have bought the Fatwood for our woodburning stove. Since the stove is our only source of heat, getting a good fire to start the day is important. I get up before everyone else and warm the house with a hot fire and your fatwood is the quickest way to light a good hot fire.
Comments about Product: I have a new type wood stove that is air tight and more difficult to light. This flatwood makes it so much easier to get it going with a lot less hassle. I highly recommend it with the newer wood stoves.
Comments about Product: When it's cold out and you want your fire to start NOW, use this fatwood with confidence. Starts fires consistantly - even with green or rain soaked wood. We always buy our fatwood from P&H!
Comments about Product: All fatwood is NOT the same. I've tried many other brands of fatwood, including pricier stuff from that Maine catalog..... This is the ONLY brand I will buy from now on. I've had 2 full seasons of effortless fires in our woodstove using this fatwood. No more smoking and sputtering until the fatwood lights--its really fast and can get the firewood lit in less than a minute. Forget about newspapers and kindling wood, this stuff will rock your box! 5 logs, 3 sticks of fatwood, strike one match and you're done. It doesn't get any easier or better than this :)
Comments about Product: I use fatwood to start my wood stove every morning. I know that once I light it , I can be assured that heat will soon be on the way. When burning brush outdoors I know that it will start even the dampest brush.
Comments about Product: Fatwood is an nessessary component for anyone with a wood stove. Start a fire with 3 logs, 5 full sheets of newspaper (tightly balled up) and 4 pieces of fatwood, and you've got a good start for a warm evening.
Comments about Product: Fatwood from Plow and Hearth is always of the highest quality. Fires are started easily and quickly both indoors and outdoors! With [...] the end of season sale Plows prices can't be beat by anyone!!
Comments about Product: I always read the ads about fatwood, but didn't buy it for quite a while because I didn't like the idea of spending money for something I was going to send up in flames; however I also didn't like waiting interminably for our woodstove to catch using the traditional paper, cardboard, kindling, bigger wood, then logs, so I decided to give it a try. Now I am a convert to fatwood and have been telling all my acquaintances about this miracle! I wouldn't be without fatwood now.
Comments about Product: During the winter months here in Oregon, we use a wood stove for over 90% of our winter heating. Ease of getting the wood started is extremely important. A couple of sticks of fat wood gets the wood burning right away. Also, if we let the fire die down too low, adding a couple sticks of fat wood brings it right back to life.
Comments about Product: I have been using fatwood for about 10 years now. Love it! [...]Just plan to use 3-4 pieces each start and it works beautifully. If you try just 1 or 2 you may need small kindling as well.
Comments about Product: I've tried 4-5 other ways to start the fire in my fireplace with mixed results. But Fatwood is be best I've tried by far. It's quick and easy. I don't even need to use kindling, which was key for all the other products I'd used.
Comments about Product: We use these to start a fire in our wood insert. They take a little bit to ignite especially if they are cold, probably the wax needs to be warm to ignite faster. But all around a good product!
Comments about Product: We have a gas/wood fireplace that we prefer to light natural over gas. The Fatwood offers a quick light without having to use the gas so it's all good. Thanks for a great product. We'll be back next year, again!
Comments about Product: nice precut size. usually ignites quickly, but sometimes it struggles. and sometimes a slight smell but all in all a good product, especially for those who don't want to mess with cutting their own starter wood.
Comments about Product: I use this primarily to light my wood stove. While some sticks are rich in resin, others are quite dry. Fatwood is still, in my opinion, the best, and greenest, product with which to start a fire, but some of the sticks from this supplier should hardly be classifed as 'Fatwood.'
Comments about Product: we use the fat wood to help get the fire started. we have had the luxury to use this for the last few years...so helpful. if we could buy it less expensive and in larger quantities, i would be even happier!!
Comments about Product: I have a good place to "hide" the big box of fatwood we get every fire season, so it's not in the way or an ugly sight. The big box is more economical and I don't worry about running out, season long.
Far less risky than liquid starters, and burns hot to get a good start for a fire that heats up quickly.
I've not had much success with less that 4 sticks, and 6 is better, divided into two bunches, one on each side, to get my stove full of wood started. Start with a medium to large piece of dry wood in the back...: Lay the 6 pieces of fatwood on the grate in the bottom across the length of the fuel wood, with a small to medium-sized log in front, and fill in the middle with smaller dry sticks or tiny logs, with a good log on top. Open the damper and light the long wood stick-match and get both sides of the fatwood sticks ignited.
One match, great fire every time, if the wood is dry. Third year using only fatwood as fire starting assist.
Comments about Product: The absolutely greatest product we have ever found for starting woodstove fires...I introduced it to my brother and he said it was the only thing he has ever found to consistently start his wood stove...We love it!!!
Comments about Product: Use this to start my wood stove. Saves me having to further split my wood into little starter pieces. A real time saver. The 40# Box lasts me a season. Can light any size piece with one match and that lights the others. I typically use 3-4 pieces to get a fire going from scratch as my wood is unfortunately never properly seasoned.
Comments about Product: One year I bought a box of fat wood for my brother in law as he was always into making fires in the fireplace and then in the wood stove and fire pit outside also. I didn't know how well received it was until he hinted the following year that he loved that fatwood. So now its a yearly gift that I know is always appreciated.
Comments about Product: I get up in the morning to fill my wood stove and there may only be a few coals left. I throw a few sticks in place some logs on top and it's going again in no time. I received them the first time as a gift and now buy them myself. Great product.
Comments about Product: I buy this product every winter now!I bought my brother some for a birthday present and he loves it too. It is true that it takes only one or two sticks as long as you have fairly dry wood. If your wood isn't fully seasoned you might have to use a couple more. One box last me more than through the winter. I still had some left to start this year. The only thing that is kind of weird about it is it leaves hard clumps in the bottom of the wood stove where you use it. It makes it easier to clean out the wood stove though. Definately recommend it!
Comments about Product: It makes building a fire a cinch. We have gifted two of our family members this year with their own cases of fatwood. They were super pleased with the practicality of the gift and the quick start the fatwood provides every time. [...]
Comments about Product: I am using my fireplace for the first time in my new home and I couldn't do it without FATWOOD! This is the best product for the novice fire-starter! The fatwood ignites quickly and evenly making it easy to start and maintain a beautiful fire!
Comments about Product: We were very pleased with this product in past years, but the latest batch we received (Oct. 2010) is split larger than optimal (i.e. each piece is too thick). As a result it does not easily ignite which defeats the purpose. Lately my husband has been splitting the fatwood into thinner sticks so it will readily light. We can make our own kindling at home as we own forestland. The reason we had purchased fatwood was for a quick way to light a fire (which worked with last year's batch), but this year's fatwood is a hassle as it does not light without being split thinner. I just measured a piece at 3/4" square on the end . . . that's too thick!
Comments about Product: I've been using this for years and have never had a problem starting a fire. It's safe and fast. I've recommended this product to all my friends and they too are very happy with it. I use it for a wood stove and fireplace....great stuff.
Comments about Product: We buy two of the largest boxes every year for our fireplace and outdoor fire pit. When wood isn't completely dry it's hard to light, but with these, the wood dries out as these burn, allowing it to light up as well.
Comments about Product: This product does every thing they say it does. [...] It is reasonably priced. And it lit very quickly. The best part is that it came to my door and I did not have to go into the woods to get it. Fatwood is becoming increasing difficult to find in the woods considering that it comes from a recently cut down Pine tree where a stump was left behind which then gets pumped full of pitch by the remaining root system. With todays logging and land clearing methods, trees are usually removed in one piece. All fatwood puts off a heavy black smoke. So you will want to keep the doors closed on your fireplace if you can. I also purchased some of the "Super" fatwood. I performed a side by side comparison. The "Super" fatwood worked just fine. But in 3 separate side by side tests, it did no better than the regular fatwood. In fact, they performed exactly the same. They both lit with a lighter in about 10 seconds and burned very hot for a little over 8 minutes. They both burned out at almost the exact same time. Which is strange because the "Super" fatwood is about 3 inches longer. I would have to say it is not worth the extra $.
Comments about Product: Plow & Hearth fatwood sticks are the best fire starting product we've found in three years! They're dependable every time; even damp wood ignites with an additional 1-3 sticks; there are no fumes (we actually enjoy the fragrant pine resin); they are easily stored fireside; they work equally well in the fireplace, for grilling, chimineas and firepits; and those receiving them as gifts have liked them as well.
The only thing that would make this a better product would be consistency in the resin content. Last year's order seemed to have less resin and an extra stick was required. Not an issue. We're satisfied and loyal customers!
Comments about Product: We use Fat Wood year after year and have started giving it as gifts to our friends that burn wood. Everyone is impressed. The kids call it "Magic Wood" and want to be the ones to get it ready for the fire.
Comments about Product: Was given a box of fatwood for a present. Have now been using it for years. I wouldn't know how to start a fire without it, and I have 3 burning stoves in my house! Everyone should try this product they"ll love it.
Comments about Product: We buy this product year after year. We use wood as a major heat source in the winter and spring and we use fatwood from Plow and Hearth. We love the pine smell and the easy way to get the larger logs to catch. In fact my son loves this in comparison to others he's tried and asked where I got it. GREAT PRODUCT!
Comments about Product: Our house does not have heat. We depend on a wood burning stove to heat the entire house. Fatwood makes it so we can light the stove in our sleep - we tried many other alternatives and this is *by far* the best solution. Once lit, we can walk away knowing the fire will take off, even if the wood is a little wet or too big to really be a starter log.
Comments about Product: This is a great product to have for use in the fireplace. It would probably be great for starting campfires, too. By using these we were able to eliminate the use of crumpled paper -- so less ashes! The fire starters always ignited quickly and burned hot enough to get the logs to start on fire.
I ordered a few extra boxes to keep on hand for last minute gifts, housewarming and hostess gifts. A great gift!
Comments about Product: My sister-in-law has used this product for years because it works so well, it's easy and it's clean. I always make it a Christmas gift to her when she's close to running out. My son had a vent fire in his woodstove, so he's now going to receive this product from me forevermore so his fires burn cleanly. No more using newspapers or brown paper bags!! And no more "chimney" fires!! Plus, I think the price is reasonable because you only need to use a stick or two at a time. I never thought to use it for a grill!! Good idea!!
Comments about Product: This fatwood was wonderful for our wood stove at the cabin. The wood stove is the only heat, so we wanted it to start quickly when we got there. These served the purpose beautifully!
Comments about Product: The best way to get a roaring fire going on a cold NE Ohio winter's night. Got us through the cold spell that seemed to last forever. A great aid in igniting wood that should have cured a few more months.
Comments about Product: I have bought the 35 pound boxes of fatwood from Plow and Hearth for years. It is clean and consistantly sized so it looks great in a container on the hearth. It is a fast, safe and natural way to start beautiful fires or to awaken ones that have fallen asleep. I think it is the best buy for high quality fatwood available. I also give it to my children's families as Christmas gifts.
Comments about Product: I use this product to start fires in my fireplace and in a very large wood stove. They work perfectly every time. I have never had a time when they failed to ignite large logs placed on top of them and it only takes 3-5 fatwood sticks to ignite 6-9 large logs! I order 70 pounds a year and trust them to keep my home and garage heated through the Pennsylvania winters.
Comments about Product: in past boxes it lit better faster and had more of a pine smell
my friend and myself have bought several boxes from you over the years and we were both very dissatisssfied this year
Comments about Product: A few years ago, I bought this as a joke Christmas gift for my sister. She lives in upstate NY and has a wood burning stove. But she liked it so well that now I send it to her every Christmas.
Comments about Product: We have a fireplace and a wood stove which we keep going night and day during the cold winter months. The fatwood is easy to use and looks ornamental in a basket by the fireplace. Fires start quickly without any bother.
Comments about Product: This fatwood is a wonderful way to start a fire in a woodburning stove. It's the easiest way to do it. [...] I'll be ordering more fatwood (in a bigger amount) for this winter's burning season!
Comments about Product: I buy this product every winter as a christmas gift for my husband and the men in my family who enjoy their fireplaces. It is packaged nicely, easy to wrap as a gift and gets the job done.
Comments about Product: I heat with a wood burning stove and have found that the fatwood saves kindling and provides a fast fire. I have used it for about ten years without any problems in the quality of the product.
Comments about Product: Fatwood is used daily. I heat with a wood stove in my basement. I'm usually the first one home in the evening and first up in the morning. If the stove has gone out, a few pieces of fatwood and a long wooden match is all I need to get the house up to a nice warm temperature. I was using old newspapers and kindling wood. It would take forever. This is the easiest, cleanest, best way to light a wood stove, outdoor campfire, etc. I've been using this product for many years and will continue for years to come.
Comments about Product: I purchased this as a gift for our daughter and she absolutely loves it. She said it is easy to use, no lugging anything and actually works. I will be purchasing more for her as a gift again this year. Great product!
Comments about Product: My husband, a former career blacksmith, loved these for starting fires in our fireplace this winter. For 15 years, his business required that he start a fire, and he is an expert. He really appreciated having the fatwood for starting fires in our fireplace, and they are much more economical than any other commercial source for kindling I have found. We will definitely be ordering more fatwood this next winter!
Comments about Product: Love using fatwood, so easy to maneuver among the logs in the fireplace and can move them around with gloved hands or tongs if they fall under grate. So quick on igniting, just a touch of the match and they are lit! Bought a case for my son who thinks they are great also!
Comments about Product: We go through at least two of these 25 pounjd packages every winter. They make starting fires easy. We love them and buy them for ourselves and receive them from relatives as gifts.
Comments about Product: I love the fact that we can buy "Fatwood" in a larger size than whats offered in the home improvement stores. Makes my morning fire starting so much easier, I just cant say enough about it!
Comments about Product: I have bought P&H fatwood for years and I love it. I wouldn't want to go through a winter without it. We have a heatilator woodstove and I burned 7 cords last winter. The 35lb box lasted me all season. What a great product! No need for kindling and newspapers. Just light a couple sticks of fatwood and tuck them under your properly stacked & seasoned firewood. I get a blazin' fire everytime!
Comments about Product: Fail-proof! Wonderful! This is a year-round product with many uses. I've purchased the fatwood for several years and not only use it in the fireplace during the winter, but also during the summer to start campfires and the BBQ grill. Can't beat it!
Comments about Product: Used in South for years to start fires. Former Southern forester who has split many a longleaf stump to make my own. Much easier to buy in quantity, already split. Pine aroma. I use daily in New England to revive a fire from coals...one stick and a little oxygen does the trick. Two sticks will get fire going from dead cold.
Comments about Product: We are fortnate to have built a very efficient Masonry Heater which only burns two cords of wood per winter in Vermont. Using the Fatwood to start the top down burn is easy, quick, no odor and I only use two pieces per fire(per day).
Comments about Product: This is the best fire starter that I have ever used. It's easy to store by the fireplace and easy to take when going camping or to an outdoor party or barbacue. No liquid starter required!! It just takes a match to light!!
Comments about Product: We heat our whole house from an air tight fireplace and fat wood is a necessity to keep the fire going for about 7 to 8 months. One 35 lb box is enough for entire season with some left over for summer camp fires. I feel this product is a bargain. When the fire goes out for whatever reason, fatwood can reignite the firebox in about five minutes and warm the house almost immediately. We depend on the efficiency of this product and have never been disappointed. Jan Travis
Comments about Product: This is a winter staple in my house. A "must have." When I get home from work on a cold winter's day, it's such an easy and quick way to start a fire. Kindling from the yard never seems to last long enough, but this product is always there for me. Love it!
Comments about Product: We use our fireplace nearly every night in the winter and off and on the rest of the year. All I can say is that this fatwood makes building fires really easy. We have not had any problem since we started using it. We also use it with our outdoor firepit and now always bring some camping with us.
Comments about Product: Use in my wood stove to get first fire started. I don't keep wood in my house because of bugs, but this starter is very clean. I keep several pieces in a container close to my wood stove.
Comments about Product: My husband uses this in the woodstove while I use it in our fireplace. I used to dread building fires until this came along. It makes the set up a breeze and starts the fire more quickly and evenly than anything else I've tried.
Comments about Product: I use the fatwood to start fires in a fireplace or to perk up a fire in a fireplace when the wood is slow-burning. To start a fire I mix in a few sticks of fatwood with some wadded up newspaper under the wood as a foolproof firestarter This fatwood is easy to burn and gives a nice intense flame burst as it ignites. It's easy to light--an excellent product.
Comments about Product: I have been buying Fat Wood for my daughter and her family for the past three winters - they have a wood stove and are very happy with the ease of lighting a warm fire that comes from this product.
Comments about Product: I've bought this case of fatwood for personal use,and gifts to Grandad. Its so easy to use. Grandad and I got into a competition one year to see how few we could start a fire with and still get it blazing in record time. He loves it, its easy for his arthritic hands to use and I love to see him happy. He still thinks the heat of the fire is the best, and uses it everyday.
Comments about Product: WE EXPERIENCED A TERRIBLE CHIMNEY FIRE FROM USING WAX LOGS WHICH BUILT UP IN OUR CHIMNEY EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE THE CHIMNEY CLEANED EACH YEAR THE BUILD UP WITH THESE WAX LOGS AND WAX FIRE STARTERS IS QUITE DANGEROUS. WE SWITCHED TO THE FATWOOD AND WE DO NOT GET THE BUILD UP WHICH CAUSED THE FIRE WHICH CRACKED OUR CHIMNEY LINER AND WAS QUITE EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE. THIS IS OUR SAFE ALTERNATIVE ONLY REGRET THAT THEY ARE EXPENSIVE TO USE.
Comments about Product: We heat our home primarily with a wood burning stove. Flat wood makes it easy to ignite the wood in a small chamber and to rekindle the fire from the coals in the morning without a lot of smoke.
Comments about Product: We use a wood stove primarily for heat, and sometimes as a fireplace. With the fatwood, you can start a fire quickly and easily. We make a pile of fatwood on the bottom, kindling next, and then a couple of logs on top. We light it and that's it! Perfect for those chilly mornings when you want some heat fast!
Comments about Product: I never knew this product would be so good. Although I do use more than recommened for my wood stove I now never use other kindling besides newspaper. I used this all the winter of 2009/10 and never had to relight the wood stove to have the fire. Great product. i will buy this every year for my wood stove. I even plan to use this on a week long camping tripd in the summer 2010. Easy to light a fire with this product.
Comments about Product: Discovered fatwood as fire starter about a year ago. I love using it instead of newpaper because it lights just as easily, starts the fire as quickly, and doesn't leave the ash that paper does.
Comments about Product: I use mainly for my wood stove in the winter, how easy to light a fire now. No messing with newspapers, no storing newspapers. Great for camp fires, doesn't take up a lot of room. Quick, Quick, Quick.
Comments about Product: It is so simple to use, our 14 year old daughter likes to help start the fires.
My father used it while he was at our house and loved it so much we had to order him some for Christmas!
Comments about Product: We've used Fat Wood sticks to start fireplaces and wood stoves for over 20 years using 2 - 4 cords of wood for supplemental heating during 3 coldest months. Always been satisfied. Plow & Hearth has great prices [...]. Two or three pieces starts wood or pressed bricks with no odor or residue. Easy to keep handfull of sticks in decorative container or basket near wood stove and rest of box in wood shed. Paper is not reliable and leaves lots of ashes.
Comments about Product: This product does exactly what it is advertised to do. We never have enough kindling prepared to get through the winter for our wood burning fireplace. With fatwood, we hardly have to use any kindling nor do we have to tend the fire as much. No chemical smell, actually nice scent, put this in a little basket by your fireplace and enjoy!
Comments about Product: We use Fatwood for indoor fires during the cold Minnesota winters. They help get the fire roaring fast. I don't seem to find the time to split my own kindling anymore...this product saves me the hassle.
Comments about Product: Last year I got fatwood for the first time and I love it. I only have to put in two pieces and it starts my woodstove. No more having to use paper or sitting there forever with the torch to wait until the wood catches on fire. I have also used it out in my fire pit.
Comments about Product: I have bought fat wood at [...] for years and thought I would give this a try. It smelled like kerosene out of the box. We aired it out in the garage for a week and the smell lessened to a tollerable level. But first time we used it, it filled the house with a petrolium smell and gave us all a massive headache. We got rid of it in our outdoor fire pit and went back to [...].
Comments about Product: This is the greatest stuff ever! I buy a 35 pound box at the beginning of winter and it lasts the whole winter. I use one or two pieces to start the fire and that's it. We have a wood burning stove to heat our house, it is the sole source of heat, so starting a fire is a necessity. I love this stuff, and Plow & Hearth has the best prices during their sales.
Comments about Product: Plow & Hearth Fatwood is a staple in our home every fall and winter when we prep the fireplace and wood stoves for the cold season. The fatwood easily ingnites and gets the fire burning very quickly. Thank you for a great and consistent product.
