Based on the other reviews, we did 2 things to the firepit before using it the first time. We drilled a small hole in the bottom to allow water to drain, and we spraypainted the steel parts with the black paint one uses to re-paint a grill. It is safe to 1200 degrees and it keeps it from rusting. We found the fire very easy to light with the rack in it, and very warming, but without the smoke in the face. Thanks for all the recommendations.

Read the reviews, beautiful when new. We do cover over winter months. Screen at chimney and at main unit below immediately began rusting. Hinges on door hard to operate because of rust. Have tried 2 different high temp paints to no avail. After less than 2 years will need to replace with something that doesn't look so "rustic".

About Me High-end Shopper
Beautifully made and to look at when new. We use it on our deck, need something under it in order to not burn the deck. Disappointed that the top & bottom screens are not made of another type of material so that they won't rust. Not knowing what material they were made of or painted with didn't allow us to use a rust preventative or high heat paint to prevent rusting.

beautiful addition to the patio

I have bought outdoor copper items before so the quick discoloration of the copper was expected. I live on the Oregon coast where we get about 90" of rain a year so I drilled a small drain hole in the bottom of the fire pit so I would not have to pour several gallons of water out each time I used it. The base seems sturdy enough but if it were to break I would just weld it back up. We love having the guard around the open fire because we have three curious but not extremely bright dogs.

not worth money
Grill starting rusting almost as soon as put outside. Well go back to my stardard terocotta chiminea... it last. the plow & hearth one is not worth even 1/4 what paid for it[...]

Wish a cover was sold with it because the slightest precipitation discolored the entire unit.Good heat output. It was great for our outdoor family gathering. Easily fed fire.

just like the other posters, we found ours rusted with the first rain. for an outdoor item, this is poorly thought-out. would not recommend. it's expensive, and has not held up well at all.

Just what we wanted and what we ordered. Hey, its made of metal and will be outdoors, gotta expect some weathering issues. [...]
Beautiful just from the box
By Live on our deck

I loved the design and it was beautiful just out of the box. After the first rain the copper looked terrible. The screen rusted and the base has no air vents so the fire doesn't burn well. Also sets so low that even with a fireproof pad under it it melted our Trex decking a little bit.

About Me Budget Shopper
This device attracts you by the ambionce, however the flimsy construction and quality of materials truly makes it possible to truly burn up your [$].Very disappointing product especially for the price. Should be a $50 item period. Unless of course you aren't intending to use this for anymore then a decorative device you carry in and out. Then being lite weight and flimsy makes it easy to store.

Looked beautiful - at first
from Indianapolis, IN
The base broke the second time we used the firepit and Plow and Hearth promised us a replacement (which was "on the way") and never came and now they won't answer my emails. We are still waiting on a replacement base. Also, even though the firepit was covered, everything rusted that was not copper. We have used it twice and now it is stored in our garage, useless.

Well made and beautiful design. Screen on chimenea rusting after a few months but not affecting the integrity and adds character. Copper weathering minimal.

Not what I expected!
By Tammie in the Berkshires

Product came dented, plow and hearth replaced the dented part. This is supposed to be an outdoor fire pit. The first light rain every part that was not made of copper discolored and rusted. For spending three hundred dollars I feel I was duped. I could have gone to target and purchased something similar for less money. I did not return it because of the size and I did not have the original box.

I was attracted to the appearance and description of the product. After less than 6 months, there was rusting all over. It was kept outdoors on my patio...used only twice since purchase. [...]

When we moved out East, we were so homesick for the West This gift's distinctive aromas was a sensory delight from back home. One stick on the grill gave that SW grilled flavor to foods, and a fireplace load brought out joyful memories. A surprising gift for your homesick cowboy or cowgirl.
