Comments about Product: This is beautiful. I planted a jasmine to climb up the trellis and also purchased the solar star string lights and strung them on the trellis to mimic the jasmine blooms after the sun sets. It is so pretty in the evening to sit on the patio in the ambient light of the star lights strung up on this planter.
Comments about Product: These planters with trellis solved a big problem for me. My water softener equipment and pump was located to the side of my house where I entered my side door and also was visible from the street. It was an eyesore but difficult to hide because of the location and the fact that whatever was built to hide it needed to be removed easily to access the equipment and to refill the salt container. Bingo, these were perfect. The rollers allowed easy access, the trellis and climbing vines hide equipment and I come home to beautiful flowers now. The only single negative I have is, it does take a long time to fill. But I solved it by removing the filter cap on the inlet for the water and when full, I simply recap it. I bought four of these and I would recommend them to anyone.
Comments about Product: The planters look very nice on my deck, a friend assembled them and he said it was easy. I hope the watering mechanism works, we have had a lot of rain but my geraniums are looking good in the planters.
Comments about Product: After moving into a Condo from a large home, my wife missed her garden. We purchased the planter/trellis and set it up on our small front porch. To elliminate the possibility of it blowing over in high winds, I installed a white shower curtain rod accross the upper portion of the trellis and fastened it with white cable ties. The rod itself is adjustable and it spans from a post to the siding of the house. It is perfect with climbing flowers. I left the wheels on (locked) for ease of moving it into the garage off season. The auto watering system is ideal. Great addition.
Comments about Product: When I read the reviews I was a bit concerned about it tipping over in the wind. Not a problem at all for me. I am just starting seeds for Peas in it and the trellis is not covered yet. I keep the resevoir full. I LOVE the wheels as I can move it around to where the sun is shining with no problems. I am very pleased with this item.
Comments about Product: I was so excited to get these (I ordered 2) and they are so tiny and so flimsy. For the price, I was expecting a more quality item. Other reviewers described these as lightweight over priced, and they were 100% correct! Not satisfied with this product.
Comments about Product: I have 2, only one sort of self waters. The self watering mechanism is very flimsy. I do however like the appearance of the white planters. I have them back to back. One on the patio and the other inside the screen porch. They are a good way to display climbing flowers in both areas without looking at the back of a planter.
Comments about Product: I bought these to create a partial blind area near my hot tub and give me some garden space on a highly concrete area. I do wish the trellis part were a bit taller, but overall it is exactly what I was looking for. I bought 4 so I could place them back to back and give more stability from the wind, which seemed to be a common issue on the posts on here. It works beautifully. I am ordering 2 more today so I can have a row of 3 back to back. We already had our first rain and highly windy storm and they survived in tact! I planted 2 tomato plants in one, 4 pepper plants in one, 2 cucumber plants in one, and 4 strawberry plants in one if that gives you any idea on the size of the planting area.
Comments about Product: One trellis was damaged in transit - customer service gave me a $20 credit. They are not as sturdy as I thought for the price. I will probably use for a summer only and perhaps replace. I love and have bought several plow & hearth products but this is not one I would recommend.
Comments about Product: The plastic is thin. I was expecting a more durable, resin type material. I doubt this planter will survive the elements for very long. Also, the drain holes were not predrilled.
Comments about Product: I purchased two of these a couple years ago to obscure the pool filter. They do the job beautifully. When I first got them had the same issue as others who've commented, tipped over in the wind etc. Here's how I solved it.
1. Took off the wheels
2. Placed a 7"x 16" patio block in the bottom of the planter.
3. Did not fill the planter with dirt, instead had 2 planters just a bit smaller that I filled w/ dirt & placed inside the trellis planter, right on top of the patio block. Makes it easier to clean up in the fall, just lift out smaller planter, to be left out all winter, while the trellis planters, with trellis taken off, stack inside eachother for storage in the garage.
Comments about Product: Light, attractive and easy to assemble trellis planter that I am using on my terrace. I followed advice from other users and ditched the wheels and loaded it with stones. It seems to be working well, good capacity but I have 2 main complaints. I ordered a white trellis but it's actually ivory, which is annoying when the other P&H planters are brilliant white. Secondly, the sponge indicator at the water filler is flimsy and doesn't appear to do anything. Overall seems expensive for what it is.
Comments about Product: had to drill lots of holes in the bottom so my plants didn't die...this is NOT a self watering system...I will stick with the earth box...now they are nice and my plants grow great in them...
Comments about Product: I bought these trellis planters so I can put them up on the porch and the deer cannot eat my flowers! The planter is on wheels so it is easy to move around if getting too much sun or shade!
Comments about Product: Oops, my mistake.
I had a location in mind when I purchased these with the trellis but was disappointed when they did not fit in with the look I was seeking.
The construction is fine, albeit a little light and will probably need anchoring and not as sturdy as I had hoped. I can foresee the plastic cracking at some point.
Comments about Product: I bought 4 of these to add privacy and beauty to my back deck, and these achieve that - once they are set up Securely. Of course when they arrived, we had the worst wind ever, and I tried everything I could, to make these stay on my deck. I even put a brick in the bottom, and they still tipped over the sides, and fell off. Finally I had to pound stakes into the ground by the decking and attach the trellises to these, and they stayed. Overall - I'm still happy I bought them, because no units were as nice looking. I've planted dahlias in mine, and will tie the plants to the trellis for support. One of the other reviewers complained of drainage, but you have to drill holes in the bottom when they arrive, and that should do the trick. I would still recommend these. I love how they look.
Comments about Product: I bought this for the front entry way to my home. It's much smaller than it appears online, it was easy to assemble. I'm not using the rolling wheels that are included, as I wanted it to be stationary. I think the price should have been less, if you decided if you don't want them. With the shipping charges, I'm not sure, if this was really a good deal or not. Seems a lot for what it actually is.
Comments about Product: I am growing tomatoes and cucumbers in them on my deck. They are attractive and great for training the cucumbers up the trellis and attaching the tomatoes without having ugly stakes.
Comments about Product: Prior to purchasing I was worried that it might blow over in strong winds. Not a problem whatsoever. This year I had the most beautiful flowers ever. Nothing dried out! I was also blessed with a bumper crop of monarch caterpillars who were drawn to the healthy plants. I could not be more pleased and plan to buy another one in the spring.
Comments about Product: I bought these to provide a little privacy on my deck. I planted a climbing flower that is thriving, and lettuce/spinach along the bottom. Works like a charm! The only time it moved in the wind was when Hurricane Irene blew over, otherwise I've had no problems!
Comments about Product: The trellis attaches to the base planter very loosely...we bolted them together and have yet to see how it holds up in the wind. Didn't use the wheels or watering-indicator (who needs that?). But they look great and are easy to use.
Comments about Product: I LOVE my trellis planters! I bought 3 to "disguise" my a/c compressor, which had to go on my patio b/c of zoning laws (sigh). They were easy to put together and roll easily to wherever the sun is. I planted morning glories, clematis and a tomato plant in each. They are climbing quickly and should start blooming soon. My only wish is that the planters came in a wider width--my compressor is 36" wide! But it's much nicer to look at the lovely planters than an ugly compressor! If you live in a windy area, you might want to remove the wheels and/or put some stones in the planter base. The water reservoir keeps my plants well-watered! Thank you Plow and Hearth!
Comments about Product: This product provides for a lovely entry walk into the side of our home. It was very easy to assemble. Because it is so lightweight, it blew over spilling the dirt and plants I'd put in; directions should include 'put a brick or rocks into the bottom before adding soil and plants if it will be used outdoors'.
Comments about Product: This product is used on my lanai both as a planter and as a privacy screen. Since it is plastic, it is a little flimsy but seems to be stable and durable and looks quite nice in this outdoor setting.
Comments about Product: Do not fill the water level up in the self-watering container in the rainy season. I did that and the plants drown. It was a mess to empty the water since there is no drain in the bottom. I just replanted and am now looking forward to watching the plants grow up the trellis.
Comments about Product: I travel every week so haven't had any outdoor plants in 25 years. Now with the self watering planters, I've turned into a weekend gardner. Can't believe how much I love watching my flowering vines grow, and watering them too. I love coming home from a trip to see my vines thriving. I just might become a real gardner. Who knew?!?!?
Comments about Product: Overall this product is pretty good, but not so much for the price. I do like the fact that it's portable with the wheels, but it may need a sturdier base, otherwise put bricks or rocks in the planter base.
Comments about Product: I needed a place to keep my garbage cans out of sight. This is a perfect product. I placed it at the end of my garage, planted a variety of vines and flowers in it and put my garbage cans behind it. Presto! It looks great and does the job...
Comments about Product: We are in a condo and it gives great privacy as well as beautiful plants, it was difficult to find the 2 together in a height that made sense.it would have been even better if it was a few inches higher.o
Comments about Product: I ordered this product after reading all reviews and had no illusions. It is plastic; it is easy to tip over. However, it is perfectly suited for my needs- masking a large air conditioner unit that sits on a concrete pad. I added small rocks for weight and have had no problems with it blowing over. I have healthy mandevillas planted in it and it looks lovely- and hides the air conditioner unit.
Comments about Product: I bought 2 containers as a screen on my deck. They were easy to assemble and look very nice planted with colorful flowering plants. We have had windy days and they haven't toppled.
Comments about Product: I have this item on my small back porch planted with pepper plants, and a climbing vine. works wonderful and I get ALOT of compliments. I am thinking I might need another one next Mother's Day.
Comments about Product: Really nice unit. Easy to assemble, easy to plant, easy to move. Don't forget to punch out pre-pressed drain holes. Looks great while concealing my air conditioning unit. Clematis vines love it too.
Comments about Product: Exactly what I was looking for. Read previous reviews of tipping hazard so placed cement patio pavers in the bottom before filling with dirt. With the added weight it still rolled easily and once wheels locked in place it did not move even during some very windy thunderstorms. Only wish was that the trellis was taller. Anxious to see how the plants look at end of summer!
Comments about Product: I like the screens on my deck - they provide privacy. Do NOT like how they repeatedly blow over. One of the screens is now broken, due to that. I intend to tie wrap the 2 planters together; maybe that will help a little. In general, not a bad price for the product. Just take it in during winter, maybe move it up against the house during winds if you don't want it to break or spill.
Comments about Product: These planters are awesome! I had three in Maryland...I planted perennial clematis to climb the trellis and violas to fill in the planter - they did wonderfully! I was moving overseas and sold the planter/trellises...what a mistake!! I just bought three more for my Florida porch - can't wait to see my flowers in full bloom again. P.S. Customer service at Plow & Hearth is unmatched!! You can't go wrong dealing with this reputable company!
Comments about Product: They look very nice, but are not as sturdy as I had wanted. I ordered two. The planter on one arrived broken. That was disappointing, but I was pleased with the service I got when I called to report the damage. The replacement arrived w/i a few days.
Comments about Product: I got three of these to screen the side of my house. They roll easily and will lock in place. They only problem is when we get high winds and they end up on the ground and all the soil spills out. So I have to move them when there is going to be winds. However they do the trick to screen the back yard where I want it and I can move them if I need to. Thank you.
Comments about Product: This is a great solution to hide those unsightly but necessary items from view! I use it to screen the garbage pails from the street and to "hide" the bicycles. I plan to get another for the backyard.
Comments about Product: I bought this to create a moveable screen at the end of my deck. It works OK, but has to be placed against a wall or fence when not in use, as it tends to blow over in storms. I liked it enough to buy a second one.
Comments about Product: Even though the dimintions of the trellis were listed in the catolog...the picture of the trellis looked very large. I think the picture was completely misleading. I am very disappointed with the look of the trellis. From the picture in the catalog....it seems like false advertising.
Comments about Product: It is not as sturdy as it appears in the catalog. When the base was filled with six 8-quart bags of soil, the wind blew it over. I am very disappointed. I bought the trellis for privacy, but I can only use the base, because I live in a very windy area.
Comments about Product: I filled these planters with fern, palms and jasmin and placed them on my condo balcony.
They were simple to assemble and provide me with greenery and a peaceful oasis where I can read, etc.
They are GREAT!
Comments about Product: I feel that this item was overpriced. I expected it to be more substantial in construction and looks. It rests in my breezeway, partially sheltered from the elements. Even so, the trellis has fallen down more times than I would like to say, although it was filled with heavy soil and plants and watered. My husband had to replant several times and then wound up removing the wheels for better balance. Slight improvement noted.
Comments about Product: This product is a very innovative idea. I have set the planter/trellis up in the middle of my garden archway. The only problem I have had with it is that it blows over in a strong wind. I expected the weight of the dirt to hold it in place--but the trellis is very 'dense' and the wind topples it over, spilling dirt everywhere and breaking the plants as they tip out. I had to stake it to the ground. Since then, I have had no more problems.
Comments about Product: The planters are lovely and easy to move. The self-watering feature has been working great since I got the planters, about 3 months ago. The daisys and morning glorys that I planted are doing wonderfully. The only con is there is a slight bowing of the trellis', although I'm not sure how that could be avoided given the plastic material - which is important because they are lightweight, and do not dry out fast like wood or clay.
Comments about Product: I bought two of these, intending to use them at the edge of my patio to create a screen but they have twice tipped over in the wind even when full of soil and water. I have moved them against the house where they still look attractive, but now I need to find an alternate screening method.
The planters were easy to assemble and so far have cleaned up easily after being covered in soil from the falls. They are lighter than I expected them to be, but are well made and seem durable. They are easy to move around with smooth casters, and easy to keep topped up with water.
I have only had them for two months so I don't know they will look or perform after being used for a season or two.
Comments about Product: These self-watering trellis/planters (I bought 2)have proven to be the perfect thing for privacy screens in front of my patio windows. They provide a colorful & easily maintained flower garden and privacy screen. We were going to try & build something like that until we ran across this item in Plow & Hearth. Thank you!
Comments about Product: Is this trellis worth [$]? That's questionable. But with that said, it was the cheapest one that I could locate online and I didn't have time to run to 10 local stores in search of the right solution. I put it together in about 5 minutes, added potting mix, and planted some flowering vines. Due to strong winds here along the Front Range (I live in the windiest area), it has already tilted over once, so I had to move it for the day so that it wouldn't do so again and will probably used zip ties to secure it to my deck railing in the future. I bought it to serve as a privacy barrier - our neighbors' deck sits only about 15 feet away. So far, so good.
Comments about Product: The planters looked much larger in the picture. I expected to use them to create some privacy for the end of a large deck. They are way too small to accomplish that goal. They look somewhat cheap.
Comments about Product: We were looking for a sturdy divider for our patio. We have used other materials which have always blown down. This seems sturdy enough to withstand the winds that come with storms and, because of the planter, is very attractive. If it makes it through the summer we will buy another one.
Comments about Product: Product is not worth the price. The quality is just not there. While it's an OK planter..it's too lightweight and blows over when it's a little windy. Need to place it out of a windy area so it won't be crashing over..even when full of plants and soil. The feature of being able to roll it on the patio was appealing...so it could be moved into the sun etc. Unfortunately the wheels don't roll well at all. It's easier to lift it up to move.
Comments about Product: Very easy to to put together. Sturdy, although it did blow over in a wind. One other downside is that you have to add water very slowly to get it in the reservoir without spilling over. Good buy, [...]
Comments about Product: I am using 3 trellis/planters hooked together at one end of a small patio for privacy. Once the vines grow they will work fine. Unfortunately strong gusts of wind blow them over (3 times) and damaged plants and lost a lot of potting soil. When wind is expected I will roll the planters to a safe area. With that condition in mind I can recommend this product.
Comments about Product: We are very happy with these. We got three to hide our pool equipment. They can be moved with ease since they are on wheels. We add water twice a week and our plants look great.
Comments about Product: Know my plants will be alive when I return from a vacations. Can move and adjust to sunlight, shade, and change of season. I love it at my entryway where I have placed colorful seasonal plants that love shade. A taller version would be welcomed. Although it is sturdy, a heavier plastic would be preferred.
Comments about Product: We purchased a set of the planter trellises and side by side, they provide the privacy screen we were looking for on our patio. The planters provide a means of adding flowering plants to the area. Easy to move about is a plus.
Comments about Product: I had long coveted these beautiful planters as a screen to the sunroom at the front of the house. They are perfect! Easy to assemble and the self watering function is amazing. You will never go back to any other planter.

The Olla: A Brief History
Olla (Spanish, pronounced “oh-ya”) jars have been around since ancient times. Made of unglazed ceramic, ollas traditionally have short, narrow necks with wider bodies, and are made in a variety of shapes. They have been used for thousands of years for cooking, storage, and plant irrigation.
When used to irrigate plants, an olla is buried neck-deep in the ground near a plant’s roots, with the opening of the olla extended above the soil so that it can be filled with water periodically. The porous walls of the unglazed pottery allow the water to seep through gradually, constantly and consistently hydrating the plants without overwatering them – and without wasting precious water to evaporation or runoff.
The use of ollas for irrigation was introduced to the American Southwest by Spanish conquistadors during Colonial times, becoming very common among Native American tribes and Hispanic settlers. Though the technique gave way to more modern methods of irrigation some time ago, its superior efficiency, coupled with its simplicity, has caused it to make a comeback. Though the technique has changed little since its introduction, today’s ollas are usually capped off, making them even more water-efficient.
Perfect for home gardens, Ollas are a super-easy, eco-friendly, less time-consuming way to water annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables and plants of all kinds in dry, sandy soil, very hot or drought-prone areas, raised beds, and even pots, planters and hanging baskets. Fill the olla before you leave on a short vacation to enjoy worry-free watering – and a smaller water bill!
