I live in RAIN CITY with two dogs and two cats coming in and out of my house all day long. Until now, I've had a regular throw rug covered in piles of towels in front of my door to keep the dirt/mud/debris from being tracked into my house. What a mess! The dogs (a drooly 140# mastiff & a frisky 6# pom) were always kicking the towels aside and the throw rug would slide all over the place. I'd wash the towels every other day, but my floors were always covered with dirt and muddy paw prints no matter how hard I tried to keep them clean. These rugs have changed all of that! My floors look GREAT for 3-4 days before I have to vacuum again. It's absolutely UNCANNY! I used to have to wash a load of towels every other day; not anymore! I just vacuum my mud rug and we're set for a few more days! Also, this rug is practically stapled to the floor; it stays put even while vacuuming!I followed the instructions which advise you to "activate" the rug by washing it before its first use. YES, there is a lot of lint in both the washer and the dryer. I used a paper towel to wipe the soggy globs of lint out of the washer (which took about 15 seconds). I advise setting the dryer heat on low AND cleaning the lint trap midway through your drying cycle. My lint trap was so full I could barely pull it out! However, this is the ONLY thing I would complain about. Perhaps they could wash them before they sell them?? hmm. Anyway, I would highly recommend these to anybody who is just fed up with pets tracking dirt and mud into their house. They are AMAZING!!!

These used to be made in the UK and identical to the UK Turtle Mats. New ones are made in China and constructed differently. The backing is a lot thicker and heavier so may be more durable but may also be harder on the washer/dryer. Taupe color was same but tan was more tan. New material is 64% polyester, 24% cotton, and 12% rayon. The old ones were 70% cotton and 30% microfiber. I think the old ones worked so well because they were mostly cotton although they did shed a lot on the first washings. I didn't keep the new ones because of the material change so don't know how well they washed. These might be more durable but probably not as effective for absorbing water. Four stars for the old. PS review was for 19" x 29". I'm assuming all sizes are being made the same now.

NOT LIKE THEY USED TO BE

The previous pair of mats we purchased from Plow & Hearth lasted approximately 10 years. We will be lucky to get 10 months out of these.

Perfect for home with dogs!
from Batesville, AR
I have these rugs at each human door and at the dog door. They do a great job of trapping dirt and water plus they stay where you put them. I love these rugs and wish they made one in a large area rug size.
Really stops the mud!

I still wipe my dog's feet when he comes in from the rain, but my foyer is actually staying clean now instead of being covered with slightly wet, dirty paw prints. The rug is kind of thin and I wasn't sure it actually work, but it does! And the mud blends in with the taupe color.

These carpets help an elderly dog walk across the ceramic tile floor. They also keep dirt and rain trapped and away from carpeting. Then toss them in the washer and dryer and they are like new. We have bought 10 in various sizes over several years as new uses arise.
Great carpets for house with kids & pets
from Warwick, NY
I first bought these rugs 15 years ago, and have just about washed them to bits -- I could still use them, but the latex was gone from the back and I was tired of straightening them out after the cats would dive onto them for "rug surfing." I am pleased with the quality of the new ones, haven't washed them yet, but we'll see if these hold up for 15 years as well! The runner is a bit pricey, I think it's worth it, but you can always buy the striped runner for less which is also nice quality

this was not what i expected. the pile was so short, not at all like the pic. i dont know how it could help with wet dog paws. we live in a rainy area and i was really looking forward to this being a help with our dog's wet feet. i am giving it a try but so far does not look like it is going to come anywhere near the help i was expecting. so may send back.

I am so dissapointed! I have ordered these rugs several times over the years and have loved them. I just ordered a replacement "Tan" rug and it is a completely different color/design than the ones I have and is not at all the Tan shown on the web site. The new tan is multi-colored (like the taupe) with gold, white and BLACK(!) threads. Additionally, as one reviewer also mentioned the backing is heavy and black. The rug threads are cut unevenly so the black backing shows in some places along one edge. Disappointing quality/product from Plow & Hearth. This one is getting returned and I'm hoping not to have to pay the shipping as the product is mis-represented.

I have one each at my side door and back door. They work very well at keeping the dirt from kids and pets feet from getting into the rest of the house.Throw them in the washer - they wash well and look as good as new.My one complaint is that the rubber backing rips long before the rug itself needs to be replaced. I'd like to see a heavier backing.
Handy Mud Stopper
So far, this rug has been great. I read the reviews and chose this rug based on the number of positive comments. I did not wash it before using, but it hasn't "shed" so far. If it proves to be helpful at keeping out mud and water, I'll get another one for the front door!
Don't go there!
from Lansing, Mi.
I bought 2 of these rugs. After a week or so of use, I noticed fuzz balls in my front hall, and other places on that level. We used this rug to wipe our feet when we entered the house. I realized the rug was copiously shedding fibers. I switched and put the second rug by the front door. The same thing happened--after about a week of use, my first floor was littered with fuzz balls from the second rug. I had thought the first rug was defective. It turns out both were defective and I returned them.
Lighter color than I was expecting
from Washington state
I haven't decided whether to keep this or not. It looks fabulous except that the tan color is lighter than the pictures look on the website - it looks like it will really show the dirt, but at least it is machine washable.

Lasts and lasts!
from Issaquah, WA
I used to go to TJMax or Ross to purchase cheap "throw away" mud room rugs since they got destroyed in the wash after several cleanings. These rugs last and last! They vaccum and wash well. They stay in place with a really sturdy rubber backing and don't roll up on the corners like the cheap ones.
Love these rugs!
from Cabool, MO
We have two Golden Retrievers who always want on the other side of the door they are on! This is the second of these rugs I have purchased and have them at both the back door and the garage door in an attempt to catch as many muddy paws as possible.
Not happy with these rugs
I bought several of these tan and taupe rugs from Plow and Hearth several years ago. My old Plow and Hearth mud rugs are wonderful - they are durable and wash very well and still look just about new, and I love the colors. I ordered three more in the tan color last week and they arrived this week, and the tan color is entirely different from the photo in the catalog and also from our tan rugs we bought several years ago. The backing is different too, and the overall quality was not as good so I sent the rugs back. I wish Plow and Hearth would make their mud rugs like they used to. Our old Plow and Hearth mud rugs are still the BEST rugs! I would like to buy more just like those!

Great for keeping the sand and mud that my 2 70# dogs bring in side. It's not quite non slip as advertised but quite an improvement over the old bath towels I had down before.
just as advertised
low profile, good quality, and performs as advertised. I'm glad I got one for each entrance.
Was looking for a micro-fiber runner to absorb mud & water from shoes and dog paws. There are many on the market and they generally quite thick and have thick pile "cords" that will absorb from tread or paws. This one is nearly paper thin. I didn't even pull it out of the box before deciding to return it.I would only use this if clearance under a door were critical.

not what I expected!

Actually, the rug is ugly! Can't we make a better product in the U.S.A?Please source products made somewhere else besides China. Profit margin may be good for P & H but does't help U.S economy in the long run. i was so disappointed I returned the rug.
from Williston, ND
When I got this I shook the rug and fibers went everywhere! I had to vacuum the rug and all of the debris. So far though, it seems to be holding up. The water proof backing is nice for our snow boots.
Rugs working out well.,

The 2 rugs work out very well. The bird feeder blew away the first night I put it out. Have not been able to find it.
Best in class

I've bought a dozen of these, in different colors and sizes, over as many years. The low profile fits under any door. They go into the washer. The tweedy texture hides dog hair, dirt, wood chips and everything else we bring in from yard and garden on our feet. They also make good non-slip bath mats. The oldest rugs look as good as the newest.

Bought this because I have 2 dogs and a 1/2 acre that can get pretty muddy in the OR winters. It seems thin overall -not plush at all, and there is very little pile on the edges of the rug. It came w/o instructions but I had read the other reviews and washed it before using it; they were correct, it left piles of lint in the washer & dryer. I'll keep it but am beginning to wonder how long it will really last. So far, I've not seen any real difference to amount of dirt my dogs track in. Maybe the rug is too short for their stride and not getting all of their paws?

This rug helps collect debris from feet but it is so easy to clean up and most of the debris does not even show. I really like it!

Just not impressed with the quality. In the picture it looked more plush.
This a good carpet and great value for the price. Thinking about getting another one. I ordered the smaller size and could have gone a little bigger.
from Villa Ridge, MO
The rugs are fantastic at catching dirt off of feet and paws from our dogs. Only problem with replacement rugs is that the tan is not tan colors. It has a yellow, unattractive color in it. The two tone tan rugs were a lot more attractive.
from Rohnert Park, CA
Rug stays put, seems to do the trick in absorbing water/dirt off of dog's feet. Could be a little wider to accommodate full width of door & allow for overlap on either side of door. (May have to order larger size to get that!)

We use the mud rug at front door to wipe dirty wet shoes/boots on and it works great, absorbs water and dirt, wife very happy about that.
