definitely worth the money
Comments about Product:
I had been searching for purple martin houses at local stores and found none that I was pleased with. I purchased 2 houses and I am very pleased. They are well built, easy to assemble and ideal for the area where we live.

Comments about Product:
Didn't get the rods to hang gourds on, and have been told they will be sent, but we need to get it set up now, so we are waiting, hoping we don't miss the chance to get the martins started.

Comments about Product:
I am using it as my Martin house, although I also have a lot of tree swallows that have taken over a section of my gourds....I had to use my glue gun to keep my gourds from took some doing to get these together..I put the glue on just to keep it from opening,I wasn't going to take any chances...but it works and the glue comes apart easy if I want to take. It apart

Gourd Good, Pole Must Go
Comments about Product:
After originally ordering the Gourd and Pole SET, I was very disappointed at the gourds that came. They were two pieces. After many calls,P&W then sent me 8 one-piece gourds. Excited, I go to set up the pole and it was missing pieces, missing the coupler, crack in the plastic, and the bag with the parts was someone's old Ziploc bag. Obviously this had been returned before. I missed out on this season's purple martins. I am returning everything!!!

Comments about Product:
I was so disappointed when I was putting together the gourds. First, the description in the catalog made it sound as if the gourds were one piece. They are NOT! They were two pieces so I thought it wouldn't be too bad. WRONG! They did not stay together securely, and the sides were popping open with cracks. They say that can happen if you tighten the screw too tight. It happened no matter how tight the screw was. I called and they are replacing the two piece gourds with the one piece gourds as described in the catalog. I am waiting for their arrival and hope that they do not get here after the scouts have declared their turf.

Good Deal
Comments about Product:
Very nice for the price. Looks durable with the right features to attract Martins. Little difficult snapping together but some pressure in the right place did the job. Got it fully installed in about an hour and now we will wait for the birds to show up.

The Olla: A Brief History

Olla (Spanish, pronounced “oh-ya”) jars have been around since ancient times. Made of unglazed ceramic, ollas traditionally have short, narrow necks with wider bodies, and are made in a variety of shapes. They have been used for thousands of years for cooking, storage, and plant irrigation.

When used to irrigate plants, an olla is buried neck-deep in the ground near a plant’s roots, with the opening of the olla extended above the soil so that it can be filled with water periodically. The porous walls of the unglazed pottery allow the water to seep through gradually, constantly and consistently hydrating the plants without overwatering them – and without wasting precious water to evaporation or runoff.

The use of ollas for irrigation was introduced to the American Southwest by Spanish conquistadors during Colonial times, becoming very common among Native American tribes and Hispanic settlers. Though the technique gave way to more modern methods of irrigation some time ago, its superior efficiency, coupled with its simplicity, has caused it to make a comeback. Though the technique has changed little since its introduction, today’s ollas are usually capped off, making them even more water-efficient.

Perfect for home gardens, Ollas are a super-easy, eco-friendly, less time-consuming way to water annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables and plants of all kinds in dry, sandy soil, very hot or drought-prone areas, raised beds, and even pots, planters and hanging baskets. Fill the olla before you leave on a short vacation to enjoy worry-free watering – and a smaller water bill!

How it Works:

Water is pulled directly through the terra-cotta!
