Comments about Product: After reading some reviews both here and on Amazon.com I was a bit afraid to purchase, but I did. Anyway, I couldn't be happier that I did buy this. It is wonderful. Easy to put together, and it looks nice. It was weird because some of the zip ties were already cut, like it was a returned product, but the box it was in was perfect, so I don't think that was the case. The tongs were difficult to open at first - my husband was able to pull them open and he thinks they are the best quality tools he has seen for a hearth. Very pleased with the items. Shipping was fast, I ordered on Monday and had on Thursday. I did contact P & H though because communication about shipping wasn't all that great. I contacted them on Thursday, they said it would be here Friday. I heard the doorbell ring a couple hours later and it was already here!
Comments about Product: I don't mind that it is made of painted steel. The finish is nice and smooth and will make dusting it a breeze. It is quite sturdy, holds a fair amount of wood and looks great. I like the welded handles on the tools as opposed to those that screw on - they are always coming loose. It is the perfect size for my small hearth. I love the look of the broom but it does tend to shed at each sweeping. I will probably have to replace it, which is too bad. I am a female senior and assembled it myself with the tool that came with it. The only problem I had was with the smaller screws that attach the bottom shelf. Took a bit to get those in. Overall, I am very happy with it.
Comments about Product: Sturdy -- no more going outside for wood for a night's fire. This keeps all you need at your fingertips! Great design, strong enough to hold a ggod deal of wood. Just make sure your wood is about 18" long or it won't fit in the wood cradling handles.
Comments about Product: We don't regret the purchase because it fits perfectly on our hearth, which is not a large one,and we like the functional design with separate sections for wood and kindling or newspaper. Also,it looks nice and the powder-coated finish on ours is much better than what other reviewers have commented. But the tools are cheap;the shovel fell of the handle within a week of use (very flimsy weld) and the broom loses bristles almost every time it's used. We replaced the tools, which adds to the cost. Still,if you need a compact unit, this is a good option because we did not find any other sets to fit in a compact space, and it looks good.
Comments about Product: One of the tools arrived broken and all of the zip ties that were being used in the package were already cut when the package was opened. Very disappointed. This was a Christmas gift.
Comments about Product: Gave the log bin to son as gift. Put together on X-mas day but alas, a piece was defective. The tray/shelf at bottom of bin had holes that were not bored properly causing screws to strip when trying to screw them in. They would not screw in. Very frustrating. Don't understand how simply boring holes was not done accurately and that a simple visual check would have revealed the defect. Called yesterday and new parts are being sent. Disappointing that original piece was defective. Awaiting new pieces.
Comments about Product: We have a well used wood stove; things are too messy with paper, kindling, tools, ash buckets...so I started shopping. I like to buy american and sturdy products. HOwEVER in this economy, I cannot bring myself to spend 300+$ on a lovely crafted wrought iron fireside set.
If I had a 500K log home I would probably go the more spendy route. I have a cute little 1000 sq ft home with oak floors and gorgeous views. the gentleman who gripped about the quality of this product I think did not do his homework to know the price difference for the quality he was hoping for or was from "the great generation" born on the 30's and expected high quality for 100$.
the holes were miss drilled so 2 of the screws would not hold, however there were 2 additional metal brackets (not listed on the instructions) that fixed the problem. I think If you go at this project with the mindset that it will do a great job, though it is not perfectly straight and does not feel solid, you should be very happy with your purchase:)
Comments about Product: This rack requires 8 bolts to put it together. 4 bolts are shorter than the others, but the instructions don't say which are used for which purpose. Further, 3 of the 8 bolts did not fit correctly, and the allen wrench stripped the bolt, so now I can't even remove the bolt and try another (from home). Good thing I live within driving distance of one of their stores, as I can't dismantle it to ship it back for a refund. It's a flimsy/thin metal construction - maybe worth 1/2 the price (and I probably could have found the same quality for 1/2 the price somewhere else). I've purchased several items in the past month from Plow and Hearth (replacement screen, plus this), and I observe their quality to be sub-par. The black paint is so thin, or not sturdy, that one rub across the hearth, and there's bare metal showing now...and the black matte paint scratches/scuffs way too easily.
Comments about Product: The log bin with tools does the job of holding wood and the fireplace tools without taking up a lot of space and becoming an eyesore in the decor of the room. It looks very neat and adds to the style of a room. Along with looking great it holds a fair amount of wood along with the tools and all the necessary items to build and maintain a fire while keeping all the mess of a fireplace contained in one small area.
Comments about Product: I'm very disappointed in this item. If it hadn't been such a hassle to return I would have. It's poorly made, was extremely difficult to put together. The bolts that came with it stripped and the holes on the tray didn't line up. We struggled to put it together. The tool was flimsy so we had to use our own tools and bolts. . I'm surprised that a company that specializes in hearth products would carry a item this cheap.
Comments about Product: I was disappointed in this set. There was a dent in the bottom tray when I took it out of the box. Assembly was easy, but the screw holes did not line up right on the bottom rack and the screws got cross-threaded. Once it was together, it did not stand up straight and wobbled. I don't think it was actually wrought iron, it was more like painted steel. Seemed a bit flimsy for the price. I will be returning it and paying more money for something more sturdy.
Comments about Product: My husband had some difficulty assembling this product, due to dried paint in the bolt holes. But it has worked fine for us since then. It stands solidly, holds plenty of wood for several hours in our wood stove, and I really like the poker. (We haven't used all the tools yet.)
Comments about Product: I was able to assemble in 10 minutes and loaded it with logs, kindling and matches and had it hearthside. Tools seem of decent, usable quality. Keeps wood and related neat and tidy.
Comments about Product: Got this one as a gift and I must say that if I learned anything from buying cheap [*] products this is a lesson in the art. Going to be returned at once. Too small for any real usefulness and the shovel is loose out of the box. Try and stick to american made wrought iron not thin steel. Oh Well
Comments about Product: This is a compact log rack well suited to its use as a back up indoor wood supply rack for our wood burning insert. We burn wood in our downstairs family room when the temperatures are truly low or during a power outage. This winter the rack has been refilled innumerable times! The tools are lightweight, but sturdy enough to handle a good sized log. This was a great gift from my mom.
Comments about Product: Ordered it because I could not find a stand that would support my old and reliable fire tools, which did not have loops for hanging. It works fine, is far more attractive, but is a bit larger than I wanted in the space. The new tools are good too, but I'm used to the old ones and will use them until they wear out. You might be surprised at how many people could be interested in a new stand for old, reliable tools if you offered a 6-8" square version with tools offered separately. [...]
Comments about Product: We bought this last year but have not yet used it (we need to return it) because it is defective. One of the holes on the bottom plate through which the bolts go was incorrectly machined and does not line up with its matching hole on the frame. This was very disappointing.
Comments about Product: This log bin fits in a small space next to our wood stove, looks great, and holds a lot of logs. The logs must be long enough to span the supports. The tools are OK. The broom is purely decorative. Overall we're really happy with it.
Comments about Product: This looked very good compared to some other stores. I will be returning this immediately.
It was very disappointing starting with opening the package. First I noticed it looked like wrought iron, but is just cold rolled metal painted black. You can see ugly welds everywhere, too. So, obviously it is not as strong as wrought iron. In fact, in person it looks and feels very cheap like you might expect from several large box stores. I wanted to assemble it to see if would be sturdier once assembled. Well, my hopes were dashed when the included wrench fit the bolts so sloppily it stripped 3 of them out before even getting much more than finger-tight. So, you can't tighten the bolts enough to even get the pieces to stay tightly unless you use some vice-grip pliers, which would probably ruin the paint. All of this would probably be acceptable for a third to a quarter of the price. If you are looking for a real strong wrought iron log rack, look elsewhere. If you don't care about paying top dollar for a feeble, spray-painted rack, I guess this is for you...
Comments about Product: My husband has been piling up wood and newspapers next to our wood stove for the last couple of years. He wanted to find something to hold the wood and newspapers this year. He saw this in your catalog and was impressed with it. It took him minimal time to assemble it. He and I have been very happy with how it looks and functions.
Comments about Product: Stand will be used mostly for decoration, tools are very flimsy and not useful. Construction is poor with mostly tack welds that appear they will break [...]Wood rack could be redesigned with middle support because it will not even hold companies kindling - "fat wood". For the price atleast expect it to arrive complete in one piece.
Comments about Product: I liked the way it looked and the way the components are organized..very practical. But after using it a short while one of the screws came out and the hole was too big to put the screw back in. I was able to prevent a return by removing the log holders and just piled up the wood from the bottom (eliminating the area to store paper or starter sticks). We prefer our old set of tools as the handles on these are a bit short. Not exactly what I planned but at least I can store wood in it and avoid sending it back.
Comments about Product: I needed to reduce the clutter around the fireplace and this design replaced a separate log bin, basket for kindling and a tool holder. It holds everything needed to get a fire started and looks good! Price is right as well.
Comments about Product: This is a classy little wood holder that doesn't take up too much space. However, we burn short lengths and had to add to the framing to hold the wood. We added two lengths top to bottom between the tool hangers and fashioned a "half barrel trough" to keep the logs in place. We are loving it!!
Comments about Product: This bin is perfect for small space and is relatively sturdy. I was disappointed to find two of the hooks for the tools had broken off during shipment. I superglued them back on and it is holding up well, but for the price I don't think it should be falling apart so easily.
Comments about Product: This is an attractive log holder. I put it together on about 30 min. The curved pieces that hold up the wood are in place with 4 screws. The design does not allow for bolts in the back. I worry if it's strong enough to support the wood, although the screws looked strong.
Comments about Product: This is so useful and everything is in one compact spot and takes up little space! Everything I have ever purchased from Plow and Hearth has been first class. I never have to worry about the quality of their products!
Comments about Product: I was excited to get this because I usually like all of my Plow and Hearth purchases. It was easy to put together, but when I stood it up, it wobbled. At first I thought that it was the floor surface, but I figured out that the legs were uneven. I had to put some plastic stripping under one of the legs to make it stand up straight. It is not very well made.
Comments about Product: The log bin/tool rack was easy to assemble. The broom they sent was different than the one pictured. It has short bristles that are black. The log bin does need a middle support. Smaller logs can slip through. Other reviewers had noted this though, so I was prepared. It does what we needed it to do for weekend fires in a limited space.
Comments about Product: the iron holder for the fire place logs works great but the tools leave much to be desired, shovel has broken, can't handle any weight like small unburnt logs, the tongs always come unlatched when hanging then getting caught in the logs when added to the rack
Comments about Product: I have not used this yet as I am purchasing it for this upcoming winter as I'm in a new home with fireplace..But it was very easy to put together and very pleased with the looks.
Comments about Product: Looks good, since we are in the middle of summer, I haven't had it full of wood yet, so i'm interesed to see how well it will hold up to having wood in it. Looks like it will be good though.
Comments about Product: We burn a lot of wood in the winter, and storing it in the house gets messy. This log bin met the need of storing a good quantity of wood inside near the fireplace, while keeping it off the floor and tidy. It looks very attractive, too.
Comments about Product: I have now purchased 2 of these log bins, one for my son in a condo in VT where it fits perfectly next to his woodstove in his living room, and one for my sister-in-law in CT, both with space issues. It not only keeps a lot of wood and fire starters handy in a compacted space, but having the wood at a high level is easy on the back when loading and removing the wood. And it comes with tools!! Just perfect!! Both recipients love it!!
Comments about Product: Holds everything necessary in one place. We have a small livingroom with not much area on either side of the fireplace, so it takes up little room. Instead of the logs sitting directly on the rack, we fill our log carrier and it fits right in the space. I would have preferred to put it directly on the hearth, but it seemed too tall for our small wood burning insert.
Comments about Product: We like our log bin with fireplace tools. It is sturdy, unlike designs with a small base that are likely to tip when off balance. We have a place to keep the wood handy as well. This is a practical purchase. We enjoy it very much.
Comments about Product: Not real heavy duty, but sturdy enough for the job and good quality for the price. Shorter handles good, easier to handle for small woodstove. Using shorter firewood for small stove though, log supports a little too far apart but making it work. For max function, might add another shelf - one for newspaper and one for kindling. Need both to light a fire.
Comments about Product: I was looking for something to put the fireplace logs on and was fortunate to come across the log bin with tools. I do not have alot of room near my fireplace and was so thrilled that I could get everthing I needed in one. It fits perfectly and I am also able to store newspapers. I am totally delighted with this products, it is very sturdy and looks good to. I would recommend this product
and give it a ten rating.
Comments about Product: I like the sturdiness of the tools. Decent quality. The only real issue is that the log holder section needs a center bar or a full panel. Logs are frequently cut too short to be cradled in that section and will easily fall through. I would recommend if the design improvement was made.
Comments about Product: Love how this rack is all in one (wood, tools, papers). Having it compact allows for room on the hearth for other things. It is also VERY sturdy. We have packed this rack up pretty good. It's perfect for those with a smaller fireplace or a wood burning stove since it isn't a large rack. We really love it and have received many, many complements on it from guests.
Comments about Product: We used to have a bin for wood, another for kindling, yet another for newspaper, and a separate tool rack. Now it's all in one small space but with large capacity. It holds more firewood than our old bin! We just love it.
Comments about Product: Space saving. Haven't a lot of room by the fireplace so it keeps floor empty of wood. Holds enough wood for small fireplace that isn't used a lot. Our double sided fireplace is basically for looks, unfortunately. Fire tools sturdier that previous set.
