i purchased these curtains 2 years ago and thought they would be great. i had previously purchased the thermologic energy efficient curtains and loved them. they blocked the sun and washed well. well, 2 years of use of these roman shades and it was time to wash them. i checked plow and hearth site and did not see any info as to dry clean only so i machine washed on gentle cycle with warm water. the plastic backing "melted" and the shades are no longer sun blocking. the backing is still sticky--i have hung them up and continue to use. i contacted plow and hearth and was told they were spot clean only, however, this is not on site anywhere. also, interesting to note--these curtains are supposedly being discontinued according to the service rep i had talked to. plow and hearth usually has good products and great customer service but you can bet i will think twice now. i spent good money--$45 per window for curtains that look like terrible now.

About Me Midrange Shopper
Comments about Plowhearth Insulated Roman Shades:
I finally found 60W roman shades and bought four-the color is beautiful, but, two are broken because the grommets in the back that the strings go through are made of cheap plastic and broke off. 60" are heavy and should have had metal grommets. The color I bought is no longer available so now I must four four new ones elsewhere. Dissappointed.

Merchant response: We appreciate your feedback. At this time, we do not give cleaning directions for the majority of our products on the website. However, we will be looking into doing this in the near future. Per the instructions that come with the shade, you can use a feather duster or lightly vacuum the shade fabric with the soft brush attachment. To remove creases, use steam iron on medium heat. We have also been informed by the vendor that they can be spot cleaned with mild detergent and a soft brush.

EASY TO USE ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE TO BE SURE TO KEEP THE CORD BEHIND THE SHADE TO ADJUST IT.

My granddaughter really likes it, but it is not as room darkening as we had hoped it would be.

Third one I have ordered for our remodel...will be getting three additional as the project progresses.
better than expected!
Easy to install and provides privacy. These aren't intended to be black out curtains - just insulated. Works perfectly!

Think twice - not well-designed
from St. Paul
The shades were a bit of a pain to install; instructions weren't intuitively logical. The shades look nice, drape well and insulate the windows well - we're in a below zero spell right now and they are working well. I have only one gripe - the design of the pull cords stinks! The cords to raise and lower the shades are located BEHIND the top of the shade; they don't naturally hang in the upper front corner (as mini-blinds do). One of my shaded windows is behind the kitchen table, so every morning and evening, I have to move the chairs and table away from the window in order to reach the back right side of the shade to lower it and raise it. The second window covered with a shade is on an open wall, but there's a hanging plant in front of the window; again - it's a hassle every day to get around the plant to reach behind the shade to find the cords to lower and raise the shade. I won't buy any more for other windows in my house windows; I don't need the aggravation, and don't have that much time in the morning before work to move furniture just to raise shades.
Perfect Fit for Sliding Doors
from Williamsport, PA
Provides us much needed insulation with a great look. Hard-to-find 72 x 84 is the perfect size for standard glass sliding doors. We love these shades (bought two matching for same room.)
fits perfectly, and operates perfectly.

east to operate, neat whether up or down. All cords are hidden. Does a great job of keeping cold air out.
Love my new shades!

We purchased these shades for our sunroom to replace the old ones we had and we love them! They were easy to install and look great after steaming the wrinkles out.
Easy as pie
from Fairfax, VA
I was amazed at how easy these were to install. I bought one to try it out, and will be going back to get another matching shade. They look good and function just like a roman shade should. The only con I would say is where the strings are. I understand why they ran the strings behind the shade, but it is a little bit awkward and takes some time getting used to. But for what it is and its price point I don't think you can find much better.

We purchased the 48X72" roman shades for a bedroom[...]. Installation of brackets and mounting of shades were effortless, and the ease of raising and lowering with the continuous chains was a most pleasant surprise. These were our first purchases from Plow & Hearth but will definitely not be the last.
Nice Addition to my Kitchen Window
from Carson City, NV
The roman shade is a nice addtion to my kitchen. The only problem is the location of the pull cord. It's BEHIND the curtain making it difficult to open and close.
from Washington state
These are very attractive and seem well made. My only complaint is where the pull cord is. You have to reach behind the curtain to open or close it. The action is smooth and they usually fold up properly. It's just a bit awkward finding the cord when the shade is down and dropping it when it's up.
Another Plow and Hearth good purchase

Nice, but not exactly what I expected
from Denver, CO
These are beautiful curtains and have added elegance to our living room. However, I was hoping they would block a bit more light, since we paid more for "insulated" curtains. Also, the pull strings are REALLY frustrating. Since there are three separate cords (that always get tangled and look a mess) it can be hard to pull the curtain up evenly. Putting the curtains back down is the worst part though. You have to hold the string at just the right angle- and that means up and behind the curtain itself as it is lowering. The look is great, but the mechanics leave something to be desired.

Insulated Roman Blinds
from Pittsburgh PA
Th blind is used to insulte a living room in the cold of Pittsburgh..not only that but It does a great job of keeping it cool.
Good quality fabric, solid construction, easy to adjust to fit window length.
Very happy with them
from Hailey, Idaho
I have these in three bedrooms and have been very happy with them. The darker shades block light fairly well (not so much the lighter colors...no surprise).
Attractive but difficult to use
from New York, NY
I bought two of these Roman shades for our bedroom in the blue color. They look nice and they block light well, but my husband and I both have a horrible time raising and lowering them. It just seems like the string is in the wrong place. The only good thing is that we often find ourselves laughing at how ridiculously hard they are to raise every morning. They are always crooked or bunched up or a string is caught. My husband says "The Romans certainly didn't know how to make shades." haha
Attractive & Practical
By Marley's Dad
from Spokane, WA
This blind gave us an attractive shade that helped control sun and temperature. Looks much classier than traditional window blinds. I recommend a valance of some sort for a truely finished/refined look. The material was very good, but had a tenancy to wrinkle a bit. Overall, this product is big winner for the price.
from North Carolina
These shades came in the size and color we needed and were easy to install. We are very pleased. I would not put them in a young child's room because of the cords and actually adjusted and cut the cords for our window once they were installed for safety. But it was all simple and they work perfectly.
material weave did not match swatches
from Southern NJ
I have a linen shade a few years older from plow and hearth that is very room darkening even in an off white. The new one in tan tends to glow from the light outside since the material is so much thinner. The swatch colors matched but the swatch material was more like a twill weave and the shade received was more like broadcloth, much thinner.
