Disappointing
Comments about Product:
I have purchased the Pig and Bear tables as gifts for my parents. Both are awesome! I am a horse person, so when the horse came out, I jumped at the chance to buy it for myself. I am glad I did not buy the Horse for someone else as a gift as it is VERY Disappointing. It seems much shorter and narrower than the Pig and Bear so not very useful as a table. Also, consistent with the other reviews, it has an odd appearance - somewhat resembles a pig or rodent maybe because the head seems short/blunt and the pose with the head down. I think it would be more attractive with the head up. It resembles more of a fat Shetland pony than a horse. It is so short and narrow that it seems to have little practical purpose. Also, because it is so low to the ground and because you really have to study the head by the floor to figure out what type of animal it is it is visually strange and unappealing simply as a decoration (vs. table). I think I will be returning it though the pain and expense of doing that has kept me looking at it in my living room for a the last week. I am very disappointed and think, with some revisions, that it could be very cool. I have never been unhappy with anything I've ordered from Plow & Hearth before. I should have heeded the reviews.

Very detailed. A lot of personality .
Comments about Product:
This is a gift to my son in law whose grandfather is a genuine "Horse Whisperer". It is small but useful and appears true to a small horse stature. Children could get hurt on the sharp details.

The Olla: A Brief History

Olla (Spanish, pronounced “oh-ya”) jars have been around since ancient times. Made of unglazed ceramic, ollas traditionally have short, narrow necks with wider bodies, and are made in a variety of shapes. They have been used for thousands of years for cooking, storage, and plant irrigation.

When used to irrigate plants, an olla is buried neck-deep in the ground near a plant’s roots, with the opening of the olla extended above the soil so that it can be filled with water periodically. The porous walls of the unglazed pottery allow the water to seep through gradually, constantly and consistently hydrating the plants without overwatering them – and without wasting precious water to evaporation or runoff.

The use of ollas for irrigation was introduced to the American Southwest by Spanish conquistadors during Colonial times, becoming very common among Native American tribes and Hispanic settlers. Though the technique gave way to more modern methods of irrigation some time ago, its superior efficiency, coupled with its simplicity, has caused it to make a comeback. Though the technique has changed little since its introduction, today’s ollas are usually capped off, making them even more water-efficient.

Perfect for home gardens, Ollas are a super-easy, eco-friendly, less time-consuming way to water annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables and plants of all kinds in dry, sandy soil, very hot or drought-prone areas, raised beds, and even pots, planters and hanging baskets. Fill the olla before you leave on a short vacation to enjoy worry-free watering – and a smaller water bill!

How it Works:

Water is pulled directly through the terra-cotta!
