Prior to purchasing, I was a little skeptical because of the other customer reviews. However, once they arrived I was very surprised to see that they were well constructed and that they are also very cute!!! In addition, I tend to believe that some of the complaints about this item may not be justified. Time must be taken READ all of the enclosed instructions in the package.... For example, the directions specifically state that the blades on the fan portion must be adjusted PRIOR to use or the wind cannot catch the blades to make the whirligig move. In addition, the screws cannot just be hand tightened and they DO require the use of a wrench to tighten securely!! Otherwise, the repetitive CLOCKWISE spinning will loosen them and they will eventually fall off. Overall, I am very pleased with these. They are a great price and they have been a nice addition to my gardens. CUSTOMER TIP**** Take the time to Oil the moving parts prior to use and it will spin more freely and will not make a lot of noise when spinning.

I had looked at this in the catalogue for ages and when it went on sale I bought it. It is as charming as pictured. However, the blades are flat and straight and not angled at all as in a proper whirligig. Therefore even the stiffest breeze doesn't budge it. Also. there wasn't a clue as to how to put it together.

welded poorly near the feet of birds.

The whirligig is an ornament to admire in our back yard. Two days of mild wind and the mother cardinal broke the wire that held her on and it all crashed down. My husband was able to apoxy it in two places. We do love it, just wish it were made a little more durable.
Doesn't move smoothly.

The whirligig will need some adjusting to make it run smoothly. It was packed well for shipping so it seems it could've been checked before sending. It is very cute.

I put it up outside in my flower garden. It was outside for two weeks in the summer and it broke. The entire top came off the pole. I repaired it and it lasted a month. It is now trash. Do not buy. Even if it cost $5.00 it isn't worth it.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Delicate but can be sturdy
from Scranton, PA
Make sure the propellor is very tight, it can be the weakest link. If it stops working, take the time to see what is sticking and slightly adjust the wires. Ours survived 20+ mph winds.
Fell apart within two weeks
from Burnsville, NC
This fell apart within two weeks of putting outside. The problem was that the top of the pole had a disc with the stem that the whirligig sits upon, was welded with two small welds. It broke off. I asked a friend to reeled it and he said that the disc was so thin that it wouldn't take a weld. He used JBWeld and the disc held up. So after putting it back together, it lasted a couple of days before the stem broke off! I would not recommend for anyone to buy this. Too poorly made and cannot stand up to normal wear. Plow and Hearth were good about sending a refund.

Rod that bird sat on was unusable too flimsy to stand upright in the ground. Propeller contiunued to fall off until tightened with a large pliers. Turn rod in center was binding, so that the babies and mother could not turrn at same time.\
I put this out and it spun -boy did it - went out the next day and have no idea where the spinner is - the wind took it away. now, as others say - I have a cute garden ornament - that I would NEVER have paid this much for. Disappointing!!
Save Your Money!!!
from Houston, Texas
We had this for exactly 15 hours, my husband put it in the backyard so that I could see it through the kitchen window, and I saw that the mother bird was laying on her side just barely hanging on. The BREEZE blew her over!!! This is a very flimsy whirligig, shaky, noisy, shaky. The birds don't go up and down as freely they should, they move but are very noisy and wobbly. The blades are fabric (NOT METAL) and one has a wide "run" (like the ones we get in our panty hose). Right now it is a expensive reminder to me every time I go out on the back porch because that's where it's sitting, unusable. NOT HAPPY AT ALL WITH THIS THING.
As cute as it's pictured!

We are so happy with mama feeding her babies but we did have to move it to a more protected location out of direct wind as we were afraid it would get damaged. We have many whimsical items in our gardens but this is by far the cutest! We'll take it down during winter months as we want it to last for many years. Best buy through Plow and Hearth and very quick service.
from Trussville, Alabama
I purchased this for my mom at the lake - they love to sit on the deck and watch the birds (real). Was so disappointed that my dad has had to put the mama bird back together several times and last night my mom said it bit the dust. For it to be metal - very, very flimsy. Not good quality stuff.
OLD FASHION WHIRLIGIGS
I THOUGHT THIS WAS EXPENSIVE BUT I HAD TO HAVE IT BECAUSE IT WAS SO ORIGINAL. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG THAT PROPELLER WILL LAST OUT DOORS WITH THE SUN WIND AND RAIN WORKING ON IT, BUT I THINK THAT FABRIC WILL ROT AWAY OVER TIME. NUTS WORK THEIR WAY LOOSE EVERY WEEK OR SO, SO I PUT A SMALL WADD OF ELECTRICAL TAPE ON END OF SCREW THREADS, BUT YOU COULD USE GORILLA GLUE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO KEEP FROM LOOSING THE NUTS. SPRAY OR PAINT ON CLEAR APOXY COATING TO KEEP PAINT FROM PEELING.
Not made for wind!
By Garden Girl
It is really cute, but the spinner fell apart in less than a week & the wind was never above 20mph. Now I just have a cute garden decoration that doesn't move. I wouldn't have paid [$] for that! I was surprised Plow & Hearth would sell something so flimsy.

I was glad to recieve my Mother and babies, but did fine that in high winds the blades do come off and it was noise, which we did put a little oil on the parts. As far as the paint fading it has not happened, but it is not in direct sun and when it does , I will just repaint it with paints that you can get in any craft store, which the person could have done. And as far the wind, we just moved it in a better location where the wind is not so hard on it or else take it inside untill it is less windy. I do believe tho that some extra parts should be included just in case some get lost due to weater condition.

Paint faded by end of season
This is a very cute whirligig which was purchased as a gift for my parent's flower garden. They loved it, but the paint colors faded so badly by the end of the season they didn't put it out again the next year. Too expense for a one-summer gift.

Well, I bought this whirlygig on clearance and when it arrived it had all the parts except the stand. However, the minute I contacted customer service about it, they immediately shipped me the stand. I am well pleased not only with the product but especially the customer service!
Too fragile for Kansas winds
from Spring Hill, KS
Was wanting a whirligig and the cardinals were adorable. However, the winds were so great the day I put it out, the blades came off. My husband put a better nut on to keep it on, then cardinal was feeding her babies at a super speed until it broke the mechanism. Cute while it lasted. I noticed some people having trouble getting the blades to move. Make sure you put it on correctly. If it is put on backwards, it will not work.

So so whirligig
from Lynchburg, VA
I gave this as a gift and the recipient set it up before I had the chance to see it. The fan spins fine, but it doesn't move the birds. When it's adjusted or tightened, nothing moves very much at all.
