Comments about Product: Didn't realize it was a put it together grate. Good thing I have socket wrenches. Would have been nice to have a piece of paper with the bolt dimensions. The last one from P&H lasted 20 years. Hope this one does as well.

Saf-T Grate large size ordered
Comments about Product: I replaced my worn out fireplace grate with a cast iron Saf-T grate. I love that it's cast iron because I researched and feel it will last a long time, better than my old one. We build really hot fires and the steel one we had before was literally disintegrated in the middle.
I love the design, the way the logs have to roll down into the center as the fire dies down. I feel safer about using this one versus the traditional flat shaped ones.
The only thing I wish is that I could buy a larger one. My fireplace is a bit wider than the large sized model. Makes the logs fall off to the side sometimes.

Best grate ever
Comments about Product: Great!, I read the reviews and thought how could people be so excited over a fireplace grate , boy was I wrong ... Great we use less wood it burns longer the wood stays in the cradle and does not fall forward . Sorry I didn't buy this years ago .

Large Saf T Grate
Comments about Product: If you're looking for a great grate that lasts forever, this is the design to buy. I'm just replacing one bought in ... 1973! We burn a cord every winter. This is a rugged grate that does a good job of keeping the logs and fire centered for a complete burn. No unburned chucks falling thru- just ashes. You can even tilt the cradle to suit you. No problem starting or maintaining fires, either.

Comments about Product: We had been using the grate that was in the fireplace when we bought the house - it was too small for the firebox really and that's why we thought our fires didn't look so good or stay strong for long. I never realized what a difference a grate can make - this holds the coals and really gets an amazing fire going! Our old grate had such large spaces between the grates that the coals just fell to the bottom and did not sustain warmth or fire. This grate does all those things and more. Worth every penny!

Best grate ever!!!!
Comments about Product: Bought my grate two years ago. Had a problem with smell in the room. No smell! Burns well with minor tending. Extends my wood usage. Highly recommend this product.

Finally, a Great Grate
Comments about Product: I have a smaller fireplace, and for several years have been purchasing cheap grates from a big-box home improvement center. Last about a season, bend and twist from the heat, and generally don't last. I saw this on the P&H website, and though some of the reviews weren't positive, most were, so I pulled the trigger and paid the extra money. When the box arrived, it was marked HEAVY ITEM, and indeed, the Saf-T Grate is, even the small size. You'll need a small crescent or deep-socket wrench to assemble it, and you have to adjust the forward-back tilt to get it to sit level, but if you're at all handy, this isn't a problem. The fire it holds lights easily, stays hot for longer, and all that's left at the bottom of the firebox is fine ash, not chunks of unburned fuel. I absolutely recommend this product if you're tired of constantly tending to your fire to keep the logs in place. It works, and works well.
Comments about Product: Product delivered with incorrect size nuts for the bolts sent. Called customer service to replace nuts.
Comments about Product: This grate was perfect for our Rumford fireplace. We needed something to lift the wood up to allow for air underneath while being small enough to work for our firplace design.
The jury is still out on the quality.
Comments about Product: Legs arrived broken.
A grate that works
Comments about Product: I burn hard all winter long, and this is the only grate I've found that will stand up to constant use. The last one I had lasted 4 seasons, when previous other grates would not even get me through one season. I need a quality product, and this one will be my choice for years to come.
Comments about Product: Had to order a firegrate online as it was spring and home stores considered firegrates seasonal. Haven't used it yet but it is heavy gauge metal.

It really works!
Comments about Product: This fire grate works well -- we can finally burn all the smaller chunks of wood without them falling through. It was much more reasonably priced than a similar version at the local fireplace store.
It was a little difficult to get it properly aligned so that it sat level.

a GREAT grate
Comments about Product: My parents purchased the larger version for their fireplace first, so I saw the grate in action... that sold me! The best thing about this grate is that once you have the logs in place, you don't have to tend to the fire (poke, move logs about, etc.).
Best Grate Yet
Comments about Product: After one season of many fires, it looks like the Saf-T grate won't be burning through any time soon. The design helps keep a nice bed of coals, keeps the firewood contained in the cradle, the fires last longer and doesn't have to be tended as often. Well worth the price.

Comments about Product: this product was exactly what we wanted - however-even tho we measured, etc. it did not fit. We wanted the grate to go in the long way. We were terribly disappointed.Plow & Hearth were very pleasant to work with and very understanding. I would choose them again on another product.
Comments about Product: Easy to build a good hot fire. Shape keeps coals contained and builds a nice bed as the wood burns. Strong construction, should last a long time. Get one!

I would buy again.
Comments about Product: This product is very well made.

pleased with product would recommend
Comments about Product: Holds wood in place while burning provides good ventilation
Comments about Product: We use this in our zero clearance fireplace in the living room. It fits perfectly in the firebox and has long enough legs that it is easy to clean under it. The extra clearance means the artificial logs catch fire faster and they burn longer. Our daughter had bought a grate from you & recommended we check your site. Very glad we did.
Grates are designed well, holds heat it
Comments about Product: The best grate yet, well made, sturdy, allows great airflow, allows for lots of ash buildup...cradle shape holds wood well...
Works great! Excellent quality!!
Comments about Product: Our fireplace is a bit on the small side. Logs used to roll forward and cause smoke to seep into the room. At first, I thought this grate was going to be too small but it is perfect since it keeps the logs and coals together making a wonderful fire, not to mention safer too!
Great piece of equipment
Comments about Product: Very sturdy and works well with our fireplace.
A quality product
Comments about Product: A durable product that performs advertised.
Comments about Product: careful when u measure....i have a fireback as well and a small fireplace that thease two just fit....but works as described, and am pleased.
Comments about Product: This product works so well, I wish my old grate had worn out sooner. The fires burn effortlessly because the coals are kept up with the burning logs. My old grate had the wide spaces between bars, and the coals fell down, away from the burning logs, loosing some of the heat.

Saf-T Grate is Great
Comments about Product: We replaced a grate that only lasted a year with the Saf-T grate and have used it for 2 months. It still looks like new. It's easy to clean ashes and remove ashes. It keeps logs up in place so that air can circulate around it and burn evenly.

We are SO glad we bought this product.
Comments about Product: We bought this grate because we wanted: 1) one that would not allow the logs to roll off, 2) one that would help the logs to burn completely, and 3) one that would last. This grate works like a horse in all three categories. It is exactly what we want.

Comments about Product: We are in wood country, burning here is a necessity, this grate provides a power burn, great airflow, complete wood burns with little ash but powder, and the concave design is great for wood stacks.
We have two fireplaces and have gone through several OEM grates, this one is the Boss Burning grate.
Comments about Product: It works well but I need to sweep it off after every fire as the holes get clogged with ashes and prevent a new fire from starting. It seems very sturdy, though, so I don't expect to have to replace it for an extremely long time.
Very nice grate
Comments about Product: Although I really liked the design of this grate, I hesitated buying it at first because of the price. When I got a new puppy, though, and began thinking more about the safety aspects, I decided to purchase it. I'm so glad I did. It is sturdy and attractive, and really does help prevent anything from falling out of the grate. The wood also definitely burns longer in it than in my previous more "open" design grate. Well worth the extra money over an inexpensive grate!
Comments about Product: I routinely remove this grate to clean out ashes in the hearth and find it is already loose after 3 burning cycles.

Comments about Product: My fire burned for hours without needing me to put more wood on. Wood burns completely without falling through the grate like on my old one. highly recommend.

Keep Warmer w/Sturdy Grates
Comments about Product: Did research on the internet and bought it because we thought we could get the 8" extensions to make it 30" for our big fireplace. After it arrived, I called the company and they said they no longer make the extensions. Very disapponted in that news!!
Just what I was looking for!
Comments about Product: I have looked at this in the catalog for a couple years and finally broke down and bought it. I'm so glad I did. It keeps the coals from falling down so the logs burn better!
Better Fire, Less Tending
Comments about Product: This really does make the fire burn better and with less poking and tending to it. Effective design. I recommend this for wood burning fireplaces.
Too much whiz and not enough bang
Comments about Product: Looks like a great product, however it does not perform well..........
Comments about Product: We have a fireplace fire nightly. We went through grate after grate. This one is far superior to any thing we have ever used before.

Makes the fire burn better
Comments about Product: We have a smaller fireplace and never could find a grate that would hold the wood high enough to get enough oxygen to help the fire burn. There is very little tending required anymore and the wood burns better. A great product.
Comments about Product: I really like this grate. Heavy-duty, holds logs well, and believe it will last indefinitely.
We are so pleased with this grate!
Comments about Product: I can think of nothing negative about this grate. It looks great, very strong, very reasonably priced, & disperses heat so much better than prior grates we have used. I would highly recommend this grate.
This is a GREAT grate!
Comments about Product: My husband and I love this product[...] We have had two grates prior to this one and they both pale in comparison. The design of this grate allows a good flow of air around the wood and so the wood catches quickly and burns completely. We would recommend this to anyone wanting to find a terrific grate.
Comments about Product: The grate is working well and fits our fireplace
exactly. However, if one is new to this particular design, starting a fire is a bit more
difficult at first because it draws less air. The
other good qualities of stability and safely far
exceed that one small difference with conventional fireplace grates.
This grate is GREAT
Comments about Product: Our family enjoys sitting around a cozy fire, this grate provides just that.
"Elegant and functional"
Comments about Product: The Saf-T Grate has very attractive design features that are also functional for burning wood.

LIKE THE DESIGN
Comments about Product: MALE SECTION POINTS BETWEEN THE "BREAKS" MUST BE WEAK AS ONE BROKE OFF. STILL VERY USABLE AS WE PUSHED IT BACK TOGETHER -- BUT YOU NEED TO QUESTION MANUFACTURER about THIS.
WE REALLY LIKE THE "TROUGH" DESIGN AND KEEPS LG PCS OF WOOD FROM FALLING THROUGH.
SINCE MALE TIP STICKS OUT, CASTING MAY NOT BE AS WEAK ON ALL.

Saf-T Grates the best yet
Comments about Product: I cant think of anything that is wrong with it. Ive had other ones and before a year was over it had burned out in the cener of the grate. This is a heavy duty grate and very easy to use. Ive had mine now for a year and it is just like I bought it yesterday.
Does what it promises!
Comments about Product: Burns a hotter fire with with finer ash. Definitly keeps the logs together better.
The assembly directions could have been clearer but it was not difficult to put together.
Best fireplace grate we've had.
Comments about Product: We usually go through a grate every winter. This is the best one we've ever had. Very good quality, and can withstand a good hot fire. We use our fireplace from Oct. to May, and it has held up wonderfully.
Comments about Product: This grate is excellent. We stack so much wood on it and it does a good job of making the logs roll towards the middle. The logs rarely fall off and the fire stays very hot. A very good product.
Comments about Product: No surprises. Perfect! Should last a long time.
Comments about Product: We have had to replace a few grates bought at our local home improvement stores. This one is very sturdy and has made it through the whole season without any problems. It will definitly outlast any of the others and my husband says it makes it much easier to light the fire.
durable and sturdy
Comments about Product: Ventilation holes allow air through to enhance wood burning.
Comments about Product: Very sturdy and good purchase for my wood burning fireplace
Great heavy grate.Wood burns wonderful
Comments about Product: Lets the wood burn slow so there is not as but ash. Very heavy and sturdy.
Saf T Grates
Comments about Product: It is just the right size, not too large. It was easy to put together. My husband did it and he is not handy. It also looks nice in the fireplace.

love my new saf-t-grate
Comments about Product: It keeps the logs from rolling forward so our fireplace doesn't smoke like it used to. Very well made. I first bought the smaller but decided to order the larger one so it holds longer pieces of wood.[...]

Superior and Safe, (Great) Grate
Comments about Product: I was so glad I purchased this grate when I was upgrading my fireplace. It's simple to put together, it's sturdy (heavy), and the logs seem to burn really well. [...] The slightly taller side goes toward you, so this means that burning logs don't slip off the grate.
Warm Winter Nights
Comments about Product: Quality material and great design, the only thing I don't like is that it comes in three pieces that screw together, and therefore, come loose over time.
Wood burns longer & hotter
Comments about Product: This grate holds the wood in place and keeps the hot coals on the grate producing more heat into the room. Wood burns longer and you use less.
a real winner
Comments about Product: This fireplae grate reduced our wood consumption by at least half. Not only did the wood burn longer and better, it's also extremely safe. Because of the design the wood can't roll off the grate and onto the heath. In all respects --except clunky look, which is superficial -- it's wonderful.

Not enough oxygen for the fire
Comments about Product: This grill fit perfectly in my small fireplace. However it had so much metal in the grid that oxygen was being blocked and my firelogs just smouldered. I replaced it with a similar sized grill with much larger spaces and the new grill works perfectly.
Comments about Product: I purchased this product for my husband for Christmas... our old grate was in bad shape.. he was very happy with this new one.. it fit perfectly in our fireplace. A very good deal for the price.

The Olla: A Brief History
Olla (Spanish, pronounced “oh-ya”) jars have been around since ancient times. Made of unglazed ceramic, ollas traditionally have short, narrow necks with wider bodies, and are made in a variety of shapes. They have been used for thousands of years for cooking, storage, and plant irrigation.
When used to irrigate plants, an olla is buried neck-deep in the ground near a plant’s roots, with the opening of the olla extended above the soil so that it can be filled with water periodically. The porous walls of the unglazed pottery allow the water to seep through gradually, constantly and consistently hydrating the plants without overwatering them – and without wasting precious water to evaporation or runoff.
The use of ollas for irrigation was introduced to the American Southwest by Spanish conquistadors during Colonial times, becoming very common among Native American tribes and Hispanic settlers. Though the technique gave way to more modern methods of irrigation some time ago, its superior efficiency, coupled with its simplicity, has caused it to make a comeback. Though the technique has changed little since its introduction, today’s ollas are usually capped off, making them even more water-efficient.
Perfect for home gardens, Ollas are a super-easy, eco-friendly, less time-consuming way to water annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables and plants of all kinds in dry, sandy soil, very hot or drought-prone areas, raised beds, and even pots, planters and hanging baskets. Fill the olla before you leave on a short vacation to enjoy worry-free watering – and a smaller water bill!
