Our buyers strive to find unique, enduring products for the home, hearth, yard and garden that are quality built and responsibly produced. We give special consideration to those products made with environmentally friendly materials. We provide our customers with practical products that help them live a sustainable lifestyle. Products that promote sustainability and environmental awareness include composting products, non-invasive pest control, energy-saving insulated curtains and wood burning accessories.
We also work closely with artisans and manufacturers around the world to develop innovative products created from uncommon materials and crafted by hand whenever possible. Our product development initiative has resulted in dozens of distinctive products exclusive to Plow & Hearth, from original design garden art to unique braided rugs to enchanting quilt designs. We feature many products made in the USA, and our buyers search around the globe to bring our customers quality items, some handmade, at affordable prices.
Plow & Hearth has earned a reputation for quality products and exceptional customer service. Our internal Quality Improvement Process (QIP) received national recognition within the catalog industry and we have received the prestigious United States Senate Productivity and Quality Award (USSPQA) in Virginia. Based on the core values of the prestigious Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, the Virginia program recognizes an organization-wide perspective that keeps pace with best practices and innovative approaches to leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, human resource focus, process management and results. Later, Plow & Heath received the VUSSQPA Award for Continuing Excellence for our efforts to bring quality to every aspect of our business.
In 1995, Plow & Hearth's Business/Education Alliance was awarded Outstanding New Business and Educational Partnership Program by the governor of Virginia. The program was cited as a model for partnership programs in rural Virginia.
Every year, Plow & Hearth participates in business case development and hosts visits by first-year students of the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate Business School. Students also have the opportunity to learn about business first hand as interns and associates in various departments throughout our Madison headquarters.
Our PLANTING TWO FOR ONE℠ program, in which we plant two trees for every one used in the production of our catalogs, has become a standard for the catalog industry. Since its inception in 1991, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Forestry, we've donated over 2.5 million trees that have been planted in our home state of Virginia. We believe in giving back to the community in which we live as well as making a difference in caring for our environment.
In 2008, we took our reforestation efforts to a national level by working with the National Forest Foundation to provide tree seedlings for our national forests. Since the launch, we have donated over 3 million trees that have been planted in areas where forest fires or the effects of civilization decreased the tree populations.
Plow & Hearth's commitment to community involvement is reflected in the many organizations and projects supported by the company.
Plow & Hearth supports the Madison Council for the Arts by contributing time, talent and funding to Music on the Lawn, a series of free outdoor concerts providing entertainment and enjoyment to the citizens of Madison and surrounding communities during the summer months.
Other community programs include Virginia Blood Services, to which employees donate blood four times each year; the Blue Ridge Food Bank, to which employees donate food at least once a year. We also buy livestock raised by 4H youth at the Madison County fair, which are donated to the local food bank.
In 2011, we launched a partnership with American Rivers, a nonprofit organization focused on protecting and restoring our nation's rivers. Projects around the American Rivers initiative include our Water Colors art contest and our Rain Barrel contest. We also organized an associate cleanup day of our local Rivanna River, where associates on foot and in kayaks and canoes collected 4 truckloads of trash.
Our company's volunteer-run Sustainability Committee has created a Community Garden, in which associates plant and grow produce to donate to those in need. We continue to develop additional green policies to make our work space more environmentally friendly.
Plow & Hearth is very involved in the Tour deMadison Bike Ride. Initiated by our company's founder, the ride promotes fitness and community involvement. It has grown to hundreds of riders from across the region; many associates participate each year.
In 2003, Plow & Hearth received the Madison Chamber Award, in recognition of our contribution to economic growth and stability and our commitment to improving the quality of life in Madison and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In 2010, Plow & Hearth celebrated its 30th anniversary. We have grown from a small country store into a multi-channel retailer, a leader in the catalog industry and the premiere source of products for the home, hearth, yard and garden. Today, we still believe in the importance of our customers and the value of the products we offer.
