We first bought these for my inlaws several Christmases ago, knowing how they enjoy a fire every night in winter. They're easy to use (just toss in the fire) and the colors are beautiful. They enjoyed them so much that we've bought them refill bags every year since.

The only drawback is that they look so nice in a basket on the hearth that everyone wants to display them. That's a problem when small children visit because I am certain the chemicals are unsafe. If you have pets or small children, you'll want to keep them out of reach. This is only a small (potential) negative, but you might want to be aware of that.

The 5 lb bag is the best value. For Christmas, I break down the larger bag in to smaller ones for gifts. I have been doing this for YEARS. People LOVE LOVE getting these as a gift, even if they only camp once a year!! Great for inside fireplaces as well. I love turning new people onto them, sliding them into a fire without anyone seeing and watch their reactions as they notice the gorgeous colors!!
